Dino's pizza still owes me a veal parm dinner, they messed up my order the day before my parents moved from Elmont in 1975. I still remember!
Elmont was a great place to grow up in. Loved it! It was so close to NYC too. Starting at age 12, I was in the city all the time with my dance camp friends during the winter. My friends and I would harrass the actors from the show"Beyond the Fringe" Eventually they gave us front row seats for many performances, Dudley Moore,Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller. There was a movie based on my exploits with my friends from Performing Arts High School with Peter Sellers where the young groupies follow him everywhere. My friends and I would dance down Broadway in the city, just like you would see in the movies. What a great childhood!

The store opposite Gimbels was Lanes, then Loves, then Kleins.

Lee's Candy Store in Argo Village either was also known as or at some point became Argo Sweat Shop. Last time I was in Elmont (oh, that's right, it was for our reunion!) that was the name on the building. But I also remember that name from many years ago. They served the best chocolate malteds in the world or at least I think they did. As a kid, I remember spinning around and around on the round metal stools at the counter. Maybe I was always too dizzy to remember what they really tasted like. But "great' will always stick in my memory.

Hi all, I've been meaning to pipe up on the Green Acres discussion. I think after Klein's, that store became Korvettes. The store was shoulder to shoulder with Dime Savings Bank. I also remember Thom McCann's, Baker's, and Chandler's shoestores. Down toward Gimbel's, I remember Walgreen's, Woolworth's, and Newberry's.

Happy New Year all! Let's wish for good health for us and our families/friends.

Joanne, I too loved to be able to take the bus and subway to NYC eiter alone or with friends.

Also, another store at Green Acres was Lerner's.

Does anyone remember the hamburger place/luncheonette where there was a train that circled around the counter delivering food? I loved to go there with my mother when I was young - I think it was by S. Klein in West Hempstead.

Thank you all so much for all your memories of Green Acres. It sure helps a cloudy mind.

One more question--did we have any toy stores? Where did our parents buy us toys, dolls, trains, the newest whatever we had in the 50's and 60's? Korvette's? Great Eastern? I know we didn't get anything from FAO Schwartz!

I remember "Big Top" - what I used to think was a HUGE toy store on Elmont Road near Linden Blvd - near the branch library. Other than that, I don't know. I can say for sure that although I never felt deprived, I didn't have nearly the amount of toys that my kids did!

I'm in the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C,. with Sue Leibenhaut. We haven't seen each other since 12th grade or maybe at a reunion. I'm going to the senate swearing in tomorrow and she's approving and disapproving drugs for the FDA.
Thanks to the reunion organizers. And to Joanne for maintaining the website. It's so interesting to read about the past present and future. I almost showed up and I'm really sorry I didn't make it.

I'm so glad that Sue showed me this website. Now I can catch up on everyone's life. And, let you know about mine. Maybe, tomorrow. I'm a TV writer and Sue is rewriting this post. It's always something.

love, Jan and Sue

Happy New Year Everyone! Boo Hoo- I am one of those that cannot get the Newsletter opened up for some reason??? Any chance you can make a section on here so others can read it too? I know how much work that is though..
Okay... Anyone remember Italian Ice? Lemon, Cherry and different flavors and the BIG FAT pretzels? I have not had a GOOD Italian Ice since I was in high school! there is also something that I cannot recall where I got them from but they were like White Whip Cream with yellow cake inside- called something starting with the letter R? Anyone remember them? I mean they were to die for!
YES, I remember that Pizza place too. I use to get my chin and the roof of my mouth burned on the pizza. You would think I would remember but did it everytime!
I want to thank Joanne and all of you who work on this Site! It is so nice to come in and read the messages!Since the reunion I have had Fun meeting with Amy Link, Jay Simon and Maureen McGee. It sure was neat meeting them after 40 years! Anyone else get to meet outside the reunion? I still do not feel it like 40 years ago! Just does not seem that far away that we were in Elmont! Well.. Happy New Year everyone and Keep smiling no matter what! Cris B.

Hi everyone. It is a lot of fun reading these posts. I just got back from vacation and am back to reading them.

I remember my Mom taking me to the Big Top store for my birthday. My favorite thing to buy was the Hardy Boys books.

The company I was with had a store for several years in Green Acres near the east end of the mall just a few stores from where Lanes/Loves/Kleins was. It was called Curtains and Home and it closed around '95.

Wasn't Gimbels at the other end of the mall?

Anybody remember the House of Chang on Linden Blvd. in Laurelton?

Taking the Q4 from Linden Blvd at the corner of the Cross Island Pky. to the Jamaica train station and then on to the city was a hoot!

Joe, I don't remeber doing anything like the at Walcliffe, but I do recall some crazy stuff on Long Beach. The tan lines really stood out in the moonlight.

Barry, I remeber riding the Q4 through Cambria Heights and St Albans on the way to Jamaica. I also remember seeing the Vanilla Fudge, the Yardbirds and Tiny Tim in the same show at the Filmore East.

Jack (or is it Jake) - I would have answered you sooner, but I had to go to lunch. Believe it or not, I’m at work, but I keep checking this message forum all the time. It’s addictive. It’s also a great outlet for me. My mind is a warehouse of useless knowledge. Now I can vent!

01/14/09 07:02 PM #247

Sabra (Now Barbara) Nalven (Gribin)

I think I'm sorry I started the Green Acres discussion. First, Bill called me a GAK, then Jake comes up with a jingle, then along comes a Q4 bus (I took the train at 179th St and Jamaica Ave--I don't know what bus took me there), and now I'm back at wal-Cliff (ALLSKATE--COUPLESONLY). I can still smell everyone's stinky feet! Those were the days--show your kids those skates and they look at you like you're nuts!

So who remembers Drivers Ed? That horrible blonde haired tall gym teacher who never smiled, mean as they come, who was always putting the brake on everyone? Mr. Mayer--Fred Mayer--that was him! Remember when they tried to teach us "Health Ed--rut row--Sex Education? Mayer was ridiculous as a teacher too.

If I'm going too fast for anyone, let me know. My so-called brain gets active when I read this forum--Thanks all ya'll (special to Fred S.)

Could it have been the Garden City Hotel? That used to be quite famous and beautiful, till they torn it down.
