Waiting for the snow to fall here in Mass., we are expecting 14 inches. Yuk! It was fun when the kids were around. Use to build snow forts and tunnels, sledding. Now it is just snow, pretty the first day and then!!!!!!! Not so pretty. After the first couple of snows, we just start to drive over it in the driveway if we can without snow blowing it. So far no snow, maybe it will miss us. I'll be in Boca, Fl and miami in 2 weeks, basking in the snow, can't wait.

Joe--Yes that story more than rings a bell. Her older brother Eugene was the one who got in trouble. Not sure of the exact crime, but I believe it went something like this: He lost it, went nuts, and started throwing desks and other property out the windows of EMHS. After that, her brother was never seen again at school. Lyn's family did not have it too easy. She and I were good friends back then. Whenever I went to her home, I remember thinking how fortunate I was, that my family had all of the amenities and such a nice home.

Hi Everybody - I don't know how much snow is out there now, but my Sentra looks like an Explorer from the window. We are expecting up to 18" here in the mid-Hudson region.
Susan - can the home ec teacher you are trying to remember be Mrs. Bingham?
I have sure been enjoying all the conversations here. I don't know if Roy ever got an answer to the steakhouse question. Answer: not Rustler, Sizzler.
Wishing you all happy holidays. -- Elyse

Oh boy! Do I remember Sizzler.. We ate there all the time. Nice Garlic Bread too. until I almost choked to death on their prime(joke) steak. I think that's why I eat very little meat now. It was near Carvel- which was one of my favorite Elmont places on a hot summer night. Remember no AC in those days.

Hello from sunny Fort Myers Florida. Sorry guys--you are welcome anytime--it is beautiful here.

Anyway, the home ec teacher was Mrs. Bingaman. She called my mother, said I talked too much in class, and got me in trouble. She was about 80 yrs old--or at least looked it. We had to make ponchos out of beach towels and they were ug-leee!

I worked at Sizzler for a few weeks, as a "salad girl", mixing the dressings in huge garbage cans. You don't want to know what else went on in that kitchen.

Remember "Broadway Sherwoods"? What a fun place that was!

Elyse--I remember old Mrs. Bingaman, she had a mid-western accent, and my sister and I would imitate her: Hand on chest, she would say, "Girls...You have to boil the waah-ter".

The home ec teacher I was thinking of was young and pretty with chin-length dark hair--Miss Santini? Santorino? Something like that. Anyone?

Neil Cutrone paid me a short visit on Saturday. He had spent the week in Palm Coast playing golf and his "Jet Blue" flight, out of Orlando was delayed, so Carol called Andrea and he plugged the address into the GPS. I told him he passed Chris DiMarco's house on the way in; maybe he paid attention on the way out.

John's Bargain Stores, I think you mean that one. I loved that store, everything was in bins, I don't know if i bought much, but it was fun looking.

Does anyone remember Big Ben, which was there before John's Bargain store?

I remember one time leaving my car in the Bohack parking lot, on Linden Blvd and walking home, due to the heavy snow. The next morning it sat in the middle of a cleared lot surrounded by four foot of snow. I had to dig my way to the door, let the car heat up and than beat my way out of the snow bank.

During winter months me and me pals would go rollering at Wal-Cliffe (not Wal-Mart ), it was a winter activity and a great place to meet and have contact with girls.. I must confess that on the Friday and Saturday nights I did not see many EMHS people there . It was very dusty and they would not for some reason allow jeans , so most of us guys wore black chinos , and they would be covered with dust by the end of the night. From there we would all hurry home thru the graveyard (Beth David ) to watch Alan Burke on TV. Or we would walk up Belmont Blvd to Hungry Hermans for hamburgers . Did anyone out there attend the K of C dances that were held on friday nights . The dances were in the hall on Elmont Rd. across from the King Kullen , they were fun and most times you knew the guys playin in the Band.

12/28/08 11:15 AM #213

Fred Spielmann

Yes Bruce, I'm sure there were a number of us at the KOC dances. You could always find someone with Colt 45 before entering the KOC hall...usually by the gas station near Como's nursery.

Sabina Musci

I went to so many of the dances at KOC that I can't begin count them. I think Roseanne Bugge's father was one of the chaperons. I'd walk to and from the dances with Debbie Glasco and two of my neighbors, Billy Schmelter and Bobby Froehlich, who didn't go to Elmont with us. Those dances were great. Someone told me that the KOC Hall is now a mosque! Does anyone know if that's true?

12/28/08 02:55 PM #215

Jacob Fishman

Bruce: I worked at Hungry Hermans. I developed a close relationship with deep fried shit and tasteless cheese on lousy hamburgers at that place.

Sabina- the K of C Hall is now a Seventh Day Adventist Church , Jack - thanks for the insight on Hungry Hermans fare. Fred - I don't remember getting tanked up for those dances , but now that I think of it I do remember some guys puking there . Again , the bands were pretty good for that era .

THE K OF C DANCES WERE A VERY BIG PART OF OUR FRIDAY AND I THINK SATURDAY NIGHTS. I DO REMEMBER RUNING FROM THE POLICE WITH JOHN LIGUORI ON MY BACK BECAUSE HE WAS DRUNK AS A SKUNK. I TRIPED AND HE TUMBLED DOWN THE EMBACKMENT BEHIND THE DANCE HALL. THE COP FOUND US AND DROVE JOHN AND I IN THE POLICE CAR BACK TO HIS PARENTS HOUSE TO SLEEP IT OFF. THATS WHAT THEY DID BACK IN THOSE DAYS. IT WAS A CLOSE DECISION TO BRING HIM TO THE HOSPITAL TO HAVE HIS STOMACH PUMPED OR SLEEP IT OFF , HE SLEPT IT OFF AND WAS FINE IN THREE DAYS OR SO. SO YES SOME OF US DID GET DRUNK AT THOSE DANCES..........JOE

Now that you mention it Joe, I remember that night.

Right now it's very cold and snowing. I want to wish a Happy New Year to everyone & best wishes for a great 2009!

Let me be the first to say "Welcome to 2009!!!!".
Jake, I have always felt that Robin Williams and Billy Crystal were the 2 funniest comedians on the planet. But after reading your short reply from 12/28; other things you've written here and listening to you at the reunion, I think you've just about moved into the top 3. You should ditch whatever you're doing in life and get on the comedy circuit. I'd buy a ticket. Hey, wait a minute, would'nt I get a comp? Need a manager?
Re: Wal-cliff - I never skated there or even stepped foot in the building but can't figure why. Was that a big hangout for our school and for what grades?
I have a group idea. I finally conviced George Cohan to sign in and I sent along Bob Walters e-mail address to Joanne. I bet everyone of us knows at least 1 classmate we're still in touch with that hasn't signed in or who's e-mail address is missing from the master list. How about contacting that classmate(s) or at least forwarding the address to Joanne. I bet we can really increase the class contact list.
Lastly, I definitely remember going to Sherwoods for ice cream (and then Jahns when we finally were able to drive). But doesn't anyone else remember Pompeii on Linden Blvd for pizza? I use to down a whole large pizza myself (only $2.50 for the whole thing back then)

OK all you Elmonitors:

Roy, I remember the name Pompei, but don't exactly remember where it was.

Can ya'll(that's southern talk from Fla.) recall:

Dino's Pizzeria
Pizzoli's
Lee's Candy Store--later on Murray's
Young's Tea Garden
Rottkamp's Beverages
Wesson's Hamburgers
The stores in Green Acres--I can only remember a few--Cathy Bogue and I worked at Gimbel's--there was Sam Goody, a charcoal hamburger place for lunch, Penney's, a store that sold socks and stockings, Baker's shoes, and I don't remember the anchor opposite Gimbel's. Anyone?

One more--George's Bake Shop--had the best crumb buns--right near John's Bargain Stores and the Community Inn
