Hola Cris,
First off you are no old lady . All I remember is our "Hail to Gotham" song but no recording , or I would still have it as I save everything. I think it is wonderful that some came from Dutch Broadway others from Alden Terrace and still more from Gotham and St. Boniface.I work at JFK airport and on occasion get off the parkway and drive thru Elmont , most of the infrastructure hasn't changed but alot of Elmont is different. We were all fortunate to grow up there when we did in the times we did .
Jack , the little flute was called a "Tonette" it was black plastic and we all had to learn to play it in the 6th grade.
And who could forget "Howie and His Cello " Miss Podvinez wrote it just for him.Miss Podvinez styled her hair in a victorian fashion , kinda like Eleanor Roosevelt.Do you remember marching into "assemblies" to John Phillip Sousa marching music ? I liked Miss Podvinez and she liked me.
And yes Cris I remember Miss Skaling the kindergarten teacher the other Kindergarten teacher was Miss Macando.
And since we are talking old time Gotham , do you remember Miss Place , the librarian or Mr Myatt the Art teacher?
Sabina- was Michelle Viti's cousin named Dee ? Getting Back to EMHS , who remembers the nite WMCA came with the Royal Guardsmen and Dandy Dan Daniels? That was a very memorable night. The date was Dec 11th 1967 .

Bruce, I think I have their autograph! No,wait--it was The Buckinghams! Does anyone remember that dance?

Also, does anyone remember the Junior Prom? All I can tell you about that is that I sat at the same table as Cathie Bogue, and the sophomores served us. The photo is in the 1967 Yearbook.

Hi Susan-I still have an unopened album (yes vinyl) of the Buckinghams that I got at a Soupy Sales concert at the Paramount theatre in NYC in 1966!!! They opened for Soupy Sales. Right White Fang... right Black Tooth.

Wow! All interesting! Stuff here! Loretta you go girl! I bet you are a GOOD ACTRIST! As for me, I wanted to be a Gym Teacher but they told me that I was not smart enough to get through college. I did not have very much confidence but I grew to realize that it was important that I did what I loved doing in order to be happy. I Did get my Degree-switched from Gym to Pre-school to K-8 Elementary-got hired before I got my degree in Akron, Ohio. Also taught in Charlotte, NC. I even got 18 credit hours in towards my Masters too! I guess I was on a roll. Teaching was my LIFE! I DID IT well. I just had the knack for teaching.I knew how to teach children so they learned well. I miss it terribly but Gardening took over. So two things I did DO in my life that I loved and I continue to Garden now.So stop and smell the Roses! Work hard and you will achieve. Nothing is Free. All these things my Dad, my hero use to tell me.
Okay! NOW WHAT do you remember about YOUR HERO..Who was it and what did he/she SAY to MAKE YOU STOP And listen and Remember. Words To REMEMBER FOREVER! WHAT is YOURS???

How are you!! So nice to see your message. Too bad you didn't make the reunion--it was a lot of fun.

Wasn't Mrs. Cockerill originally Miss Sinrod? I hated her! I called her "Miss Sinny-sin-sinrod". (I was 9 years old--that was pretty bad language for me then!). Anyway, she was so mean to all of us in the fourth grade. She was quite beautiful, with long blondish hair in a page boy. Then she got married, and pregnant.

Well, she came back to visit the school, and brought the baby with her. It was, I guess, 1960.I will never forget if I live to be one hundred years old, what happened next: She had the baby in her arms, and said in a sweet, syrupy voice, "Christina! My baby!" and made all sorts of lovey-dovey mommy noises. I was shocked! How could this mean teacher, that everybody hated, be nice to a baby! Could teachers really act differently outside of school than in school? Did they actually have a LIFE outside school? This thought had never occurred to me before!

While all of you people are babbling on - Oh, wait a minute, that's what I usually do! Today I have to be real brief because Friday morning we had an ice storm that knocked out all our power and it is still out at 2:20pm on Sunday. So you're asking - how can he be on line with no power. Good question! I have my lap top hooked up to my generator sitting in my driveway and I don't know when it will conk out. So here goes for today. My wife and I actually made an Ebinger's Chocolate Blackout Cake from the recipe that Susan Fogel supplied. My exact words when we finished were, "Holy shit! It looks just like an Ebinger's Chocolate Blackout Cake". It tasted about 90% of what I remembered which I think is damn good! The filling especially was great. Here's a suggestion. If you have left over filling don't refigerate it and then eat it as a pudding. Much, much too rich! But here's the good part. You can freeze what you don't eat. I just defrosted 2 pieces and they were excellent!
Now for Dutch Broadway teachers I had:
kindergarten: Ms. Curtis
1st grade: Ms. DeJoungh
2nd grade: Ms. Fauci
3rd grade: Ms. Saunders
4th grade: Mr. D'Arrigo
5th grade: Ms. LaVenia
6th grade: Ms. Novick
I can remember stories from elementary school but am having a hard time remembering my teachers. If you were in any of my classes, could you fill me in? Thanks.

Roy - we were in the same classes almost each year - I had Miss Wallace in Kindergarten and Mrs. Fenton in first grade but other than that the same teachers - I remember being traumatized in first grade because I got yelled at and punished for continuing to work in a workbook when we were supposed to be resting on our desks - quite the way to way to inspire children...

I think the way we were tracked there were a lot of us who were in many of the same classes all through Dutch Broadway

I hope you have gotten your power back or get it back shortly - I know there was widespread damage and no idea how long it would be to get everyone's power back on.

Sabina - I currently know one of Micheles cousins and her name is Dee Stauffer . Michele and I were friends in 3rd grade , but I must confess I was more "friendly" than she.(I have photos)
Speaking of young love and romance Laura, I can remember playing spin the bottle in Joe Gentile's basement with his sis Kathy and all her girlfriends ,WOWIE !

Hey Roy and Susan-I had Miss Fauci (very nice short lady) and Mr. D'Arigo for 5th grade. I also had that witch Miss Solowey. I always thought that one day someone named Dorothy was going to drop a house on her. Does anyone remember Mr. Prenoveau. He was fresh out of college and loved to play sports with all the guys and get roughhoused.

Susan Baum (Schloss)

Hey, Mitch--I had Mr. D'arrigo in 5th grade too! I guess we were in the same class.

In third grade, when I started at Dutch Broadway (by the way, does anyone know how it came to be known as "Dutch Broadway"?) I had Mrs. Diemer. The most horrible moment of third grade was when we were all supposed to bring in magazines, tear the pages into long triangular strips, and roll each strip up into a "bead", glue it, and make a necklace out of it. Well, apparently, I forgot to bring in a magazine, so I went to the coat closet and cried!!Mrs. Diemer came over to me and assured me that it was OK, and she gave me pages from someone else's magazine!

Fourth grade was Miss Sinny-sin-sinrod, fifth was Mr. D'arrigo, and sixth was Mr. Bishop, who was one of the best teachers I ever had in my life.

Fellow Mr. Bishop-ites---what say you?

Susan - I think the road was named Dutch Broadway because Elmont was orignially settled by German farmers. St. Boniface is a German patron saint, hence the local church was named for him. There are tombstones in St. Boniface Cemetery written entirely in German.

Sabra (Now Barbara) Nalven (Gribin)

Susan(still Susan) and Roy:

I had Mrs. Diemer in 3rd with you, and Miss La Venia in 5th with Roy--Soloway in 4th.

Susan--I don't know if Sinrod became Cockerill--I had her in 8th at EMHS--she taught English by then-is she the same person, ya think?

Some more thoughts of Dutch Broadway School:
*I always thought the steps between floors were so incredibly wide until I went back many yrs later and discovered that the stairs were normal size but I was just a little guy at the time.
*I always thought the library shelves (hey, remember Ms Jensen the librarian?!) were so incredibly tall until I went back many yrs later and discovered that the shelves came up to my chest. Again, I guess I was just a little guy at the time.
*I remember the punch ball games during lunch recess -trying to hit the pink ball over our own "green monster". I wasn't very good but I think I actually did it once or twice.
*How about being a lunch monitor and collecting lunch money from everyone in the AM; putting it in a manilla envelop and then redeeming the money for those little tickets at the cafeteria. Oh, my God! I just flashed back to the bologna sandwiches with mayo on them.
*Remember the monkey bars on the side grassy area?
Interesting what we remember!!!!!!!

Sabina--that is very interesting! In fact, I remember that when I first lived in Elmont, in 1957, summertime, there was a tiny farm almost directly across from Dutch Broadway school!! I guess the land was bought by someone and converted to houses or whatever.

One of the first memories I have of Elmont is when my sister Sheila and I, (I was 7 1/2, Sheila was 5), went to summer day camp at Dutch Broadway. My mother was supposed to pick us up after the first day, and must have gotten the time wrong, because we must have been waiting there for awhile, and didn't know what to do. So Mr. Noto, who was wonderful (boysss on the right--girlsss on the left), took us each by the hand and walked us home! My mother was shocked to see a man walking with her two little girls!

S.N.B.N.G.--(Sabra Now Barbara Nalven Gribin)--You may be right. Perhaps Miss Sinrod became Mrs. Angst? (What a name!). Then which one was Mrs. Cockerill??

Joanne--I don't remember making a dress out of towels. I do, however, have the only two dresses I ever made, one in 7th grade, one in 8th. I saved them all these years. Does anyone remember the name of the home ec teacher, she had short dark hair? No, not Mrs. Erlich.

Roy, I made a bag out of burlap in first grade, and had to emroider my initials on it, it was a class project. I remembered it as a huge sack, like something Santa Claus might carry. I found it many years later (I guess I don't throw anything out), and it was a little, teeny, tiny thing! What a surprise!!

I know I'm suppose to wait for our first class newsletter to post a classified. But I'm going to jump the gun right now.
My daughter Jamie is an art major senior at the Univ of Hartford. She is in the early stages of developing her own line of greeting cards and would love to work for a greeting card company when she enters the "real world". She has already looked up every US based company. Obviously, a "door opener" works better than a cold call. Does anyone have any insight into the greeting card industry or, even better, does anyone know someone in this industry? Maybe I could get my kid to name her first card after you! Thanks.

What did I want to be when I grew up?...An artist like my dad. He worked for Time/Life/Fortune magazines for many years...he played guitar, accordion, harmonica, and who knows what other instruments...
Oh yeah, I wanted to be a musician too.
I came to Elmont from St. Boniface (culture shock!)
- I remember the name Dianne Falasko, but I cannot remember what she looks like now.
I remember Mrs. Nash - was terrified of her, and of being called on by her. Must've been those eye-lashes that spooked me, Sabra.
Mr. Lederway - remember he was always well liked by students, and wished I'd had him for a teacher.
Mrs. Lefkowitz - damn good teacher, even I - a predominantly right-brained person, learned algebra in her class.
I remember a dance, might've been 10th grade...in the cafeteria...don't remember bird cages, but do remember doing a dance called the "Skate". Anyone remember that dance?

Loretta, I remember being so impressed by your performance in...The Crucible, I think it was our Senior year?

hi. everyone and happy holidays to all. i was in the 5th or 6th grade class with lyn turner. i remember her brother got in trouble with the law or something real bad happened. all the kids in class were told about it and were in shock. she was absent for a few days and the teacher said she is coming to school the next day. the next day was filled with so much tension you could feel it in the room. i remember she broke down and started to cry and everyone felt uneasy. it was bad. maybe that is why she dropped out of school. never the same. she was a very pretty girl with blond hair and very nice. does this story ring anybodys bell..........joe gentile

Good mornin'
as I was lazily getting out of a yummy bed this morning, not wanting to rush out into the cool 60's F temperature, I was reminded of the simple fun of bowling at Argo Lanes and I remembered 2 people, the first was our classmate Johnny Holton, great athlete, good baseball player, and the 2nd was the little lady that I can see right now with a black pearled necklace for holding her glasses around her neck, "Mrs. D" was it short for Mrs. de Stefano, who gave out the lanes and the shoes.....your memories?

if anyome comes to FL for the winter pls call me 561 477 3133

I cant believe I just wrote that and I am laughing hysterically.

Anyway, Sunday I will be in the cold weather in Park City, Utah thinking about Billy basking in the sun.

Roy-say hello to George Cohan for me. He and I laughed alot together.

Happy Holidays to everyone. I am going to walk the dogs.

We are in Blizzard Central in New York City!!

Susan - I believe in NY you call a Winter blizzard 2-3" of snow. Between the storm we're expecting tonite and another one late Sunday, we should have more that a foot of the white stuff up here in Maine. And that's on top of the ice storm a wk ago that killed our electricity for 3 days. Get out the snow shovel, lady and start digging!!! And please no jokes about living in the middle of nowhere. Cape Elizabeth is actually 2 towns over from Portland right on the ocean.
