Funny, This is my 37th and last year of teaching, too. You just know when you have had enough!
Who else is retiring this year?

04/01/09 09:55 PM #301

Nancy Jacob (Belluscio)

Carrie and Fran--Congratulations on your retirement. I thought I retired, but I don't feel like I am. I still teach 2-3 times a week, but at least I can say, "No, I can't come in today."
For retirement gifts, people gave me all sorts of things for sewing and crafting that I used to do when I worked, but with subbing, volunteering and running the inn, I have no time for that stuff! So--may you truly retire! Fran-what's the trick? I'd love to be a grandmother, but I can't even get mine with a steady girl. Congratulations! Cristine, I certainly remember you, but after your earlier entry about being cut from cheerleading and leader corps, I thought maybe I was on your permanent shit list. I have enjoyed reading your messages, but didn't know quite what to say to you. Love to all.

Nancy et al,
Hi from the retired speech pathologist among us. At 59 and 60 , we all have a lot of baggage and a lot to get over in our lives. My biggest was my name change. At 35, I finally made the decision that I had had enough of everyone I met mispronouncing it, making it a conversation piece, and asking where my parents got the name from. So, I chose a name from our generation that felt good. My parents were actually going to name me Barbara Ann, so I went to a lawyer, and legally changed my name to Barbara Sabra Ann. My family and friends got over it, when we moved to Florida in '92, I was already Barbara, so that was easy.
Now I hear the names people are calling their children today, and I wonder how these kids are going to cope with them. Meanwhile, I'm a pretty happy camper I did what I had to do for me. As for naming our children, you can bet I chose the easiest names possible--Holly, Cindy and Jamie!! Love to all

Hello All,
In case you haven't all heard yet , I managed to win the MEGA millions lottery here in New York and will receive about half of the original prize of 24 million dollars, so I will get around 13 million, not bad for a dollar investment. Anyway I would like to share my good fortune with my classmates . My intent is to have another reunion in a special place . Not sure where yet , but all are welcome and all the bills ( within reason) are on me )Let me know where you guys would really really like to meet up and party . Bruce G.

Bruce -
I checked the date on your message to see if it was April Fool's Day. I guess not! I've been filling the Florida coffers for years buying lotto tickets. No luck yet.

Joanne Dickstein (Deutch)

Bruce, I'm sure I'm related to you! Aren't you my first cuz 3 times removed on my fathers, grandfathers sisters husband side of the family? I remember my father telling me all about this on his deathbed. He told me to store this information in some part of my brain because one day, it will be very important for me to know you. I guess that day has come.
Seriously though, I hope that is true because if it is, any member of our Elmont community that has such good fortune land in their lap, we are all very happy for that person. If it was April Fools day, it was a good one that we all wish would happen to them.
PS, I'll let you know about a mini-reunion in NYC soon.

Yeah, if it were only true and yes I was a day late and a dollar short. Much Love to all !!!

Nancy -there is hope-my cousin's son just got engaged and they are both 30.My cousin never thought it was going to happen.
Bruce- I checked the NYlottery website and knew it was just wishful thinking! But wouldn't it be nice if one of us did win!!

Joanne Dickstein (Deutch)

Too bad Bruce, I was hoping it was true.
Gilly was 30 when she got married this past Feb. and I became a granny to Dan's son AJ(he is 4 years old). I feel like I have a family again and am looking forward to seeing them on Passover. My kids have been gone so long now, it was very lonely without them. It is a pleasure to look forward to family events now. As for odd names, my daughters are Gillian and Silver Jade. My girls love their odd names and they really do fit their names. I always hated being a Joanne, I wanted something more unusual. I love kids names now.As long as a child's name is not creepy, it's fine with me. Other thoughts?

Carrie Czajkowski (Hogan)

Most people know me as Carrie but my real name is Caroline. I was named after my great uncle Karol.(Polish)I always liked it and I knew I was in big trouble if my parents called me Caroline instead of Carrie!!

As a child, I didn't like my first name. Kids always made fun of it and many adults couldn't pronounce it right. I even thought about using my middle name in high school. As I got older I learned to love my name because it's beautiful. If people can't figure out how to pronounce it, that's their problem. Now, about my last name... With all the beautiful, long Italian names, why did I get one with a measly five letters!

04/04/09 07:46 PM #311

Joanne Dickstein (Deutch)

My married last name is never said correctly and never spelled correctly. My husband suffered through school with it and so did my kids and it was always spelled Deutsch in school for them. I had to go to school, and even to college to correct the school on the spelling of their last name. I don't know how many times I had to call the swim coach at Brandeis to correct the spelling. I like my maiden name better.

Bruce: Just in case you won using an assumed name, I really do love you, and you should know that I do not use the "L" word lightly.

Susan: The deer family that resides at my house are doing quite well eating all of my new plantings, etc. and enjoying the "north light" view. Their daily gifts will insure a deep green color and the presence of deer ticks all summer. In that I have a history of toxic chemical abuse (or at least the government mouthpieces said my intake was toxic) that commenced during my dark hair days, I have no trouble chemically abusing the flora and fauna which (who) share my yard. After all, Scott's is a public company that does not require a bail out, so we all should suport and even celebrate its efforts. Look what DDT and (Government Agent) Robert Jones Orange did for the world! I will not, however, potentially abuse the fish in the pond with some chemical cocktail that my neighbor says will keep the green crap off the water during the summer. I cannot explain this dichotomy in attitude, and I sincerely wonder if it has something to do with my name. One lunatic fish is enough, and I do not like to share my drinks.

Where in the world is Peter Star?

Good health and happiness to all of you and your families. And Bruce, if you should win (or win again) in the future, keep in mind that I used the "L" word with you first. Anyone else who says it to you is full of shit and just wants some of your money.

Randy Blaustein (Solomon)

Chris-this is randy blaustein, i am alive and well in nj. i was wish-washy about going to the reunion, so didn't, but sorry that i didn't in retrospect. i enjoyed the 30th that i went to.

if there is going to be a mini-reunion in ny,keep me posted- i forgot who posted about that.

i spend weekends in manhattan where i have a small apt. and am still teaching in nj. i was in private education for 10 years so can't retire yet. however after the end of 2009 i can. i am a transiton coordinatorworking with high school studnets on life skillsand career orientation so i only teach 2 small classes a day and spend the rest of the time arranging and taking kids out of the building to work sites, so i can probably last alittlelonger. if i were still in the classroom all day, my paperswould be in to leave at the end of next december.

i like to say i know what i want to be when i grow up-RETIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Passover and Easter and whatever to all,

We usually have between 50-60 for Passover--this year we only invited 43--we haven't received the stimulus package yet!
Anyway, thanks for the name discussion. To continue a little longer, we get birth announcements from "Payton, Peyton, Hunter, Aidan, Aiden, Forest, Jax, Jackson, etc. If they are not pink or blue, or you don't actually know the person (a friend of a friend of a friend who just wants a gift), how do you know? Ya think I'm hung up on names or what? If our parents only knew what they did to us!
Jake, you're pretty funny! Does your wife think so, or is she just used to you? I know so many men who I think are hysterical, and their wives just sit there with a straight face.

Hello out there.......... I sadly missed the 40th reunion and miss Elmont and my New York friends. Fred Schneider (class of '69) and the vice-president of student council when I had the honor to be president is helping to organize the Class of '69 40th reunion and has kindly invited the Class of '68. Please see the announcements section on the Elmont website for detailed info. Fred is an excellent organizer and I would love to see you there.
Memories from Elmont?
Joanne Dickstein's stunning ballet performance in the Green and White Gaieties ...........Snoopy and our Gang (my pick....oh well) performing at an Elmont dance in 1967. Involving NBC and ABC to help paint transparencies to be projected on a large white mesh cloth from behind to help change the scenery for the 1967 Green and White Gaieties. Playing tennis at EMHS on weekends. Football games.......I never understood the intrigue of the game of football, but loved having confetti making events at my house then going to the games to have fun throwing the confetti and, of course, socializing before I went home.
Baking cupcakes with friends and having fund raising cake sales.
Choir with Mrs. Pinto. Typing with Mr. Meeks (I never did get the hang of it) Seth Daniels sitting behind me in many classes that were seating alphabetically Cooper then Daniels. Seth and I had great fun answering for each other and confusing teachers.......Seth or Beth? Interesting that our seats weren't separated. I was very sad to hear about Seth's untimely death. I remember his brilliance, sense of humor and his wonderful creativity. I am sorry that he did not get to live his full wonderful life. I remember Roy Rosenberg, Marty Raebach, Barry Pitter, Joel Silver, Jay Bolnick dropping by my house to visit and hang out.
OK, so, what happened to me? My parents moved to Merrick shortly after graduation to be nearer to North Belmore where my mom taught first grade. I left home for college and returned to New York for visits and never lived there again. I went to Boston University, graduated in January of 1972 then taught 4th grade in Braintree, Massachusetts for 5 year. I moved to Ca in 1977, got a masters in Special Education and taught Special Ed for less than a year and left when I gave birth to my son David in 1979.
When back to school in psychology in 1981 and graduated with a Ph.D. in psychology in 1987. I was so involved in parenting, school and working that I seemed to have missed the outside world for about 10 years.
I did get to go to the 30th reunion and realized how much I missed Elmont and New York. So , I miss you even more now and hope to have fellow classmates joined me at the '69 40th year reunion. It is all about timing, isn't it? I would love to hear from you.

PS- Here is a copy of he invitation to the '69 reunion (and us)

Dear Classmates from 1968,
Fred Schneider is helping to organize the 1969 40th Reunion and has kindly included our class. I sadly missed the 40th because I didn't know about it.........staying in touch and keeping communication alive from California is not one of my strengths. If I had talked less to Joanne Dickstein and other buddies and typed more in Mr. Meeks class, I may have been a better typist. Oh well.......
Please find the invitation from Fred posted below.
Warmly,
Beth Cooper Tabakin

Fellow Classmates:
Believe it or not, Spring 2009 rapidly approaches and marks the 40th anniversary of our graduation from Elmont Memorial High School. We have not had a formal get-together since some of us met at the Orchid Chinese Restaurant in Garden City on May 15, 2004. Now, we would like to get together, increase our attendance, see old friends, reminisce and in general, catch-up, this time, with an Italian flavor.
Your Reunion Committee, Liz Bruno Stranathan, Robert Goldaper and Fred Schneider, have reserved the Ballroom at the trattoria/bar, Pappa Razzi, in Westbury, where there is ample parking and the facility is near the Westbury stop of the L.I.R.R. We have planned a menu of fabulous Italian foods and desserts and an evening of nostalgia, fun and old friends. Please visit the restaurant’s website if you want a preview of the venue for the evening.
In the meantime, we need to collect the funds to pay the restaurant for the cost of the function, so request that you send in your checks using the attached coupon, As Soon As Possible, c/o Fred. Feel free to bring a spouse, significant other, or a friend who was a faculty member or an Elmont graduate from a different year. All are welcome. Bruce, I always wanted to travel to New Zealand. The guys at the 107th Airlift Wing, Schenectady, NY told me if I can make it to Christchurch, they would take me into Antarctica. Ever see a blue iceberg?
