Noah Smooke's father,Henry Smooke passed away yesterday in Raleigh NC. If any of you knew Henry, you would remember one of the best athlete's ever, skier, swimmer, tennis, runner. Awards in many events. He was a fantastic Uncle.

Hi Joanne,

I'm sorry to hear that - my thoughts are with you and your family. I lived down the street from the Smookes, but as a kid, I never go to know him on a personal level. I think that those of us who had special uncles are very lucky. I was very close to my Uncle Louis, who passed away decades ago, but I don't often run into people who had that "favorite uncle" relationship.

Happy spring everyone. The weather here in Naples is perfect.

Cathie Bogue was in Florida this past week and came down to Naples on Saturday. We had lunch at "The Dock", went to an Art Festival, and of course, I brought along my year book so we could reminisce. It was so much fun. If any of you get down here, let me know. I love to pretend I'm a tourist.

p.s. why does my name read Jan Oxenberg Jan Oxenberg? It sounds like the title of some awful foreign film. How do I correct it?

Billy,

I keep getting the notices too, but the only information it gives is the price, $120. I'd like to see the list of people who sign up.

Hi Everyone,

Here we are with 6 other friends in Vietnam.  We started out in Bangkok, then went to Siam Reap, Cambodia and Angkor Wat, and have just completed 2 days in Nam--one in HoChi Min City (formerely Saigon) and Na Trang--a seaside town that came to life after 1975.

For anyone who has ever been here after the war, it is strange and a little uncomfortable.  I wasn't sure how I was going to feel.  We did hit lots of war time areas in our touring, especially the Rex Hotel, where all of the news correspondents would meet  for what they called the "five o'clock follies"--the news of the day.

The people want Americans to visit.  They were selling T shirts that said Saigon and Vietnam'.  A lot of the foreigners on the ship were buying the shirts and hats, but we couldn't see bringing them back to the US and wearing them.  We all lost too many friends and family members.  We all bought as much as possible from the beautiful  little children.  I know we are helping the economy, but we all feel guilty from so many years ago.  Any comments from anyone else who has been there after the war?  Next stops--Hong Kong, Taiwan, Okinawa, and lots of China.  The biggest surprise on this trip?  Singapore--totally ultramodern ,clean city--I expected to be in the middle of the jungle!!! Just make sure you are not caught chewing gum in public--you WILL be fined!!

Honey, I'm Hoooome!  What a long, strange, trip it's been!  Those who have been to China know what I mean.  We were not prepared for this country, no matter what you have read or seen on film or TV.  The Chinese are light years ahead of us in architechture--their buildings are futuristic.  The smog is incredible--people wear masks, and many on our trip had breathing problems and asthma attacks--coal-coal-coal.  Still so backward in so many "people things"--bathrooms, living quarters, health habits.  So many rules to follow, both personal and professional.  Still so many old superstitions.  G-d bless the USA.  No matter your particular political leanings, we can still vote someone out of office.  Try voting out "The PARTY" in China.  Maybe one day---but certainly not in the foreseeable future.  We are still glad that we had the opportunity to visit, and it makes us realize that we have it pretty good!

Joanne, your daughter's experience was similar in many ways to ours.  The Chinese food there is disgusting.  It smells so bad in the markets that you have to cover your nose and mouth and run!  The food in the restaurants was served to us on lazy susans, family style.  You never knew what you were eating.  It either had no taste, or was vile or so spicy that your mouth was on fire!  I stuck to rice and bread as much as I could.  Since we've been home, we have not eaten in a Chinese restaurant, even though the food is so different, and we never want to see another lazy susan!

Interesting stories. And I thought they did things strangely in Italy!!This sounds much, much worse.Well cross off China as a place to visit!!
Hope everyone is well. Has winter in the North East finally finished? I can't believe I had my heat on in May.
We were in Pennsylvania for a wedding last weekend outside of Allentown and on Friday 5/14 had the worst hail storm I have ever seen. At the hotel 14 cars were damaged and our poor Acura has over $8 thousand dollars worth of repairs. Insurance is covering it except for our deductable. But no one was hurt or injured. It could have been worse!!

Mark & I just returned from a wonderful trip to China. Yes, the food wasn't the best and the bathrooms left much to be desired, but the span from the "ancient" to the "modern" is incredible, (especially in a relatively short period of time). We visited ancient Beijing and "westernized" Hong Kong" and did not feel like we were in a Communist "suppressed" society.  The world is an amazing place and to experience so many different cultures is a privilege. I highly recommend a visit to China. Debbie
