Hi Everyone,
Here we are with 6 other friends in Vietnam. We started out in Bangkok, then went to Siam Reap, Cambodia and Angkor Wat, and have just completed 2 days in Nam--one in HoChi Min City (formerely Saigon) and Na Trang--a seaside town that came to life after 1975.
For anyone who has ever been here after the war, it is strange and a little uncomfortable. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel. We did hit lots of war time areas in our touring, especially the Rex Hotel, where all of the news correspondents would meet for what they called the "five o'clock follies"--the news of the day.
The people want Americans to visit. They were selling T shirts that said Saigon and Vietnam'. A lot of the foreigners on the ship were buying the shirts and hats, but we couldn't see bringing them back to the US and wearing them. We all lost too many friends and family members. We all bought as much as possible from the beautiful little children. I know we are helping the economy, but we all feel guilty from so many years ago. Any comments from anyone else who has been there after the war? Next stops--Hong Kong, Taiwan, Okinawa, and lots of China. The biggest surprise on this trip? Singapore--totally ultramodern ,clean city--I expected to be in the middle of the jungle!!! Just make sure you are not caught chewing gum in public--you WILL be fined!!
