Thank you for taking and posting pictures!  It looks like you all had a terrific time.  I'm sorry I wasn't able to join you, but I really appreciate the photos!

I would also like to add my thanks for organizing this wonderful reuninion. It exceeded my expectations in every way and made me  realize how important all of our interactions were in high school and over the years. I am so glad that I was able to attend and hope that we don't wait another 10 years to have another one. While I was in the middle of moving this year and between that and work did not have time to contribute much to the organizational process I am happy to be part of a process in the future especially if the group wants to consider a destination reunion in Florida.

Happy to say I am progressing on the compilation of email addresses from those who provided theirs to me at the recent Reunion. Many posts since that weekend at Danford's have recognized all the efforts that added up to a wonderful setting and the joys of seeing others from long ago. It was memorable and a lot of fun! Thanks, again to Frank and all the others who worked behind the scenes long before the event took place. We hope those who didn't get to be there will continue to connect in days ahead. Be well ~ Ginger :)   p.s. Joanne: I have just a few questions and look forward to updating you so that we can create a secure way to share the info.

And thank you Virginia for compiling an e-mail list for future purposes. Just to throw in my 2 cents as I usually do, anyone who was not at the reunion but is now reading Virginia's post and this one, please forward your e-mail address to her so we can get in touch with as many classmates as possible when needed. Thanks.

Thanks for doing this.  Are you going to email the list out to all of us when done?  Or is there a different distribution mechanism.  (So not my forte).  Thanks again!

Thanks, friends! I am working through the distribution possibilites with Joanne and a few others. In the meantime, you can post on the message Forum if it is relevant for all, or also post by "Sending a private message" to any individual currently part of this site. :)

Does anyone remember or have any good high school stories about:                                                                         *Scotti's Bar?                                                                                                                                                             *Argo Theater?                                                                                                                                                         *Walcliff Skating Rink?                                                                                                                                               *Lee's Luncheonette in Argo Village?                                                                                                                       *Gouz Farm?                                                                                                                                                             *the little variety store next to St. Boniface Church?                                                                                                 *Sherwood's Ice Cream Parlor?                                                                                                                               *Pompeii's Pizzeria on Linden Blvd?

My old mind can't remember many of the other places we visited but I bet you can add to the list!

Hi Roy

I have lots of good stories about Scotty's bar. It was my home away from home for most of 10th, 11th and 12th grade. I still have my "Scotty's Young Guys" tee shirt. I'll wear it next reunion. It was great to see Steve Migden's old Elmont sweatshirt at this one. Some things one just has to hang on to.

Scotty’s Bar … although I really never drank much we sometimes would hang there … once we were celebrating my birthday and we were having a lot of fun … Im not sure if it was Scotty or one of the bar tenders who came over and asked what the occasion was … we told him we were celebrating my 18th birthday … he said “what? You have been coming here for years” … it was funny

Argo .. we used to sneak in by having one guy pay and go in and open the back door where we would have climbed the metal fire escape stairs that were in the back . I think we saw the Blob there … we used to go out for pizza afterward … I believe it was $1.75 for the whole pie

Scotty's: let's put into perspective. Cost of a glass of beer in late 60's was $ .15; a mug $ .25. Mixed drink about $ .85. Heard you could get really bombed on $ 20 of Vodka & 7 Up. Worse part was walking home drunk, since we were too young to drive. Actually better than had I been able to drive. I still have never had Vodka since that night.

Community Inn: bartenders placed tips in a Wooden Dutch shoe hanging from the ceiling. A New Years the tips were so much that the Shoe broke the wires.

I'll have to think some more for additional annecdotes. Like you have CRS at times.

Never went to Scotty’s. I remember going to The Beach House (Long Beach/Oceanside?) and drinking sloe gin fizzes. Talk about sweet! I hope I’m not incriminating anyone by thinking that Sandy Kushner drove - anyone  remember that?

I remember how delicious the pizza from Community Inn was. When we went to sports dinners, probably Leader Corps, we had to go to Pompeii, due to the reputation of Community.

Mitch gordan and I were drinking at Community Inn. Who walks in but our Math student teacher. He drove us over to Scotty's and we drank with him for awhile. Good experience.

I actually worked as. Usher at the Argo movie theater, among the tasks was to collect 25 cents if you wanted to go to the balcony. It was a short  employment, as I was terminated because the manager said he had to hire his nephew, and to top it off I only saw one movie in the six week period of time I was there. In a odd way it was the only position in my entire career that I was fired from. There was also a pizza place either next door or a few door down, 15 cents per slice.

Hey Bob - I saw The Blob at the Argo Theater but I had to pay. Wish I knew you back then so I could have gotten in for free! But then again, how much could a movie had cost back then, maybe 25 cents?

Oh, I just remembered another one - Carvel on Linden Blvd. After playing paddleball in the Elmont Road park, George Cohan and I would go to Carvel for a 1/2 pint of black & white ice cream for 35 cents.

The Argo was a cherished place . I can remember seeing "The Mysterians" there as well as most of the better James Bond movies  . I remember the admission as being 35 cents for kids, 50 for adults an 75 for the Loge , whatever that was . This classy place had a water fountain and in the tiles behind it they created 2 eyes that looked back at you when you got a drink .

I worked at the A&P across from Scotty's and I gotta tell you I rarely went in there for a drink. My alcohol socializing consisted of drinking with "the Boys" in various outdoor locations . I was never and still am not a big drinker .But prefered other ways of escaping reality .

We are all so very blessed to have lived together in such a wonderful time and place as Elmont .

Never went to Scotty's, but we talked at the reunion about a party where a certain person brought a suitcase of liquor!! I also recall an afternoon away football game. It was cold and rainy so my father passed a flask around so the cheerleaders could warm up! And, I do recall a GLC contest at the pizza place to see who could eat the most. I think I ate 9 pieces, but got disqualified bc I barfed afterwards!
Guess we could have talked forever about the dumb ads stuff we did.

Lee's Luncheonette ~ Stopped their often after church on Sunday's, as well as the little place right next to St. Boniface (why do I think it was called Pezzoli's?) Great penny candies and my dad liked to buy me an "egg cream" :).The best thing about Lee's Luncheonette was my dad became a friend of "Lee" as he sold the quality cigars, and if you know my dad, he was usually chewing on a cigar, so we got to go in and buy toys and stuff. At Christmas time my dear Mom would have Lee order our latest and greatest toys. That was a real help to her as she wasn't driving when we were young. Mr. Lee sure had a direct line to "Santa" in those days and we were never disappointed! :)    I remember the Argo Movie Theater. I would buy a Bonomo's turkish taffy and make it last for the entire movie. How about Argo Bowling Lanes... Any one remember tossing the pencils up in the air? Sometimes they would stick in the ceiling material or a little of it would flutter down. Years later I learned there was likely some asbestos in it. (Not good)! Hey, Ellen ~ I laughed at your mention of Sloe Gin Fizz. My attempt at a "real drink" because I couldn't taste the alcohol. Never caught on for me as much as the pizza offerings around our town. Community Inn ~ Yum!!! Stay well, all ~

Who remembers going bowling for gym class at Argo lanes?

Pretty sure it was at the Argo that I saw "Thirteen Ghosts", where you put on the glasses to be "scared" but were safe without them on. "Psycho" I saw with some friends, I think Jimmy Bartlett was one of them, at the Lynbrook theater. We tried to measure later how high we jumped out of our seats at the really scarey parts.

One memorable time at Scotty's was when it "closed" at 3AM, we pulled the shades down and continued shooting pool, drinking beer, and then rolled out with the sun up to go get breakfast.

Can't say I remember Scotti's bar.  I most certainly remember Argo bowling alley.  Not sure about throwing pencils up at the ceiling but throwing a round ball at some wooden sticks - yes.  I somewhat remember Argo movie theater but can't say that I remember a specific movie I saw there.   Carvel ice cream - YES - good stuff there.

I remember Tudor Wine & Liquor, on Elmont Rd, since I worked there for about 3 years while I was going to college.  Definitely had some good, and some bad, tastings there of different spirits.  Boone's Farm apple wine seemed to be a good seller since I think it cost about $1.00 per bottle.

I also remember a Sunoco station around the corner from the liquor store.  I think I used to buy gas there for about 30 cents a gallon.

Elmont and Valley Stream NY - intersting place to grow up in.  How about Green Acres and growing up near the airport.  How many times did you not here things on the TV when a jet plane was flying over.  I can remember laying on my garage roof - looking up and seeing the pilot in the cockpit.  How did we ever get used to that?

Of course good old Scotty’s bar....would frequent that place on many occasions....Argo lanes of course & Argo movie theater were fun places....does anyone remember the White Castle bar on Hempstead turnpike ....they never checked your proof & we drank there at 17 years of age. I remember the bar tenders name was Norm. He didn’t care how old we were....They had great ham sandwiches with the awesome mustard....Phil Rice, Ed Marran, John Liguori & I would hand there all the time....we did have a great childhood & teenage years....

I remember Argo Theater very well - saw a lot of movies there. But when did they start doing concerts there? I don't remember that at all. Someone told me that he actually saw the Allman Brothers there - wow!!!                    It seems like I spent a lot of time in Argo Village. I remember the deli there where I would go to get a salami sandwich on rye with a potato knish. The knishes were on a grill right in the window and it seems like most stayed on that grill all day. Next door was a variety store that Louie Berson owned. It seemed like they had every little doodad you could image for your home with very narrow aisles I think. Next to that was a great bakery whose name I can't remember. Great cakes but b&w cookies were my faves. Aw, all these amazing memories!!! We had it pretty damn good back then!!!!!!

Just remembered something about Argo Lanes. They had a number of high game plaques on the wall. But the one that always intrigued me was George George bowling a 300 games. Who would ever name their kid George if that was also your last name?

11/13/18 10:42 AM #1198

Hi Roy its Mitch. The short hispanic lady that owned the bakery next to the variety store was Lola. (she also made the very best crumb buns) She also opened the shortlived bakery in Great Eastern Mills. My wife and I ordered our engagement cake from her in 1969. I remember Louie  who always walked slow and shuffled his feet from some kind of health issue and his wonderful wife whose name escapes me now. The were members of Temple B'nai Israel. Ah, the great old days hanging out in Argo Village!
