Yes, the Community Inn had the best pizza.  We lived on the street directly behind the Community Inn and could smell them making the pizza every evening.  In the morning we could smell the bread baking at George’s Bakery, and in the afternoon we could smell the hot sandwiches being made at the deli.  I guess our neighborhood smelled pretty good!

Do you remember -

The sump on Greenway Blvd. where we used to sleigh ride.

Big Top toy store on the corner of Elmont Road and Greenway Blvd.  I got my hula hoop from there.

The bus that went down Central Ave. to Green Acres.

I still have my class sweatshirt, senior hat, sorority sweater, Robin Hood hat awarded to me when we had archery in gym class, and a poster from the donkey basketball game (I have no idea how I got that).  I also have a program book from the “old” Metropolitan Opera House when Miss Rollins took the choir there just before they tore it down.

We seldom went to movies at the Argo.  We usually went to one of the theatres on Jamaica Ave.: the Valencia, the Merrick, or the RKO Alden.  You could take the Q4 bus from Linden Blvd. to Jamaica Avenue.

Hey Mitch - Thanks for the Argo Village insight but do you remember the name of the bakery? And you're right about Louie Berson. He did have some sort of health issues and that's why he walked with a limp? Does anyone remember Dan's Supreme Supermarket in Argo Village? My late mother shopped there every week for many years! By the way, someone at the reunion told me that Temple B'nai Israel is now a church. When we were kids I remember that there was an organ used in the Temple for services but this has gone a bit too far!!! Great to hear about what everyone is remembering. It brings back great thoughts of our childhoods.

Roy, I do remember Dan’s. I remember buying bottles of coke from the vending machine in the front of the store, but my most vivid memory was being in the store and one of the shoppers had a monkey sitting on her shoulder! I also remember the laundromat, the variety store, and the candy store with a soda fountain.

My favorite store in Elmont was the appetizing store in the A&P plaza. I used to ride my bike down, get 1/4 lb of lox and a bagel next door at the bagel shop - a slice of heaven!

Super Markets to respond to Roy. I lived on Emily Ave where Fallon Ave ended. My mom also usually shopped at Dan Supreme. Sometimes she would go to the A & P on Dutch Bway and Fletcher Ave. There was also a King Kullen on Dutch Bway and Elmont Road. I worked as a part-time cashier in Dan's Supreme. Mitch Bohn and Mitch Gordon also worked there. The store manager was Adam. He taught me to always have a neat draw with the paper money facing the same way. He got that into my head - I have always carried my bills that way. Also, in my many part-time jobs over the years always kept the cash neatly arranged. I prevously worked at Murray's (aka Lee's) Candy store on the corner. I used the cash register experience from the candy store to help get the super market job. Somehwere in there I also worked in the King Kullen produce department.

Argo Village stores: 1st Dan's Supreme, TV Repair shop, Pharmacy, Bakery Shop (not to be confused with George's or Sally's on Dutch Bway), Ida's General Store, the The Candy store on the corner, the Barber Shop, last was a LaundryMat. Hope other can fill in more information. Few weeks ago on FB I communicated with Murray's grandson.

Hey Roy its Mitch again crawling out from under the fires. Lola's bakery was simply called Argo Bakery. My very first job was working in Dan's Supreme after school as a cashier, stockboy and whatever else they needed doing. The cash registers were almost the size of Brink's trucks and actually took a lot of strength to operate. I remember there was a short little Jewish man named Moe who worked in the deli and used to cut me lox fins and heads to take home at no charge because he thought they were unsellable. My take home pay was $25.74/week and I saved for 4 weeks to buy my very first car for $100. It was a 1960 Mercury Monterrey. (land yacht) I used to take 7 guys plus myself to school everyday! I sold that car to the produce manager in Dan's for $450! GREAT TIMES!

Sabina and all ~ Hooray for Big Top Toy Store! Many good memories from there. I had the original (black and white bathing suit) Barbie Doll when it came out. I also got the Barbie Doll wedding dress soon after. It's price was $5.00! Other girls made me feel like that was a fortune! What did I know? The girls on Bauer Ct. played hours with those Barbies and their outfits and also jumping rope. We thought all kids had like ten friends on their block to hang with. We flew kites for hours, too. It was a big accomplishment to get it to fly all the way down near the Water Tower on Dutch Broadway. Kids were take turns holding the string, someone would go up to the local newspaper store and buy more string, and more string and it would get so far away that near dinner time we would just have to cut it and let it go as reeling it in would have been more hours...  So much fun and kids working together... My dad was quite a shopper and accustomed to buying multiple items at a time. If the store clerk told him us kids would enjoy something, he was generous. Ralph had a Pogo Stick amogst other toys. Our dad loved many genres of music and  bought record albums often at the Sam Goody Store (Green Acres). Us kids got Peter, Paul, and Mary records and whatever stars were popular for teens. I remember seeing Peter, Paul, and Mary in a concert in Elmont. I can't quite remember if the venue was further down the Tpke. towards Franklin Square, did an arena come there? Oh, yes ~ the Island Garden... The popcorn at Great Eastern Mills was yummy, too! Surprised no one has mentioned the Jewish Deli down Dutch Broadway near A + P Grocery. They had many delicious offerings. :)

We North Valley Streamers had a Super Dan's also - on Central Ave near Hendrickson Ave. My grandmother would have me paste the S&H Green stamps in a book so she could redeem them for a discount on the groceries,       Anyone remember Bohack supermarket? There was one in Valley Stream as well- long since passed away.

Did anybody see Donovan at the Island Garden in 1968? He played 3 or 4 nights - a very big time show for a small town like Elmont.

Mitch - not to be competitive, but my first car cost $50, about all I had, but your $100 car was twice as big and probably ran twice as long. My Triumph TR-3 died pretty quick, especially after Pat Minogue drove it as fast as he could,  the hood blew off, it bounced off our heads, cracked the windshield, and when I turned to look, was spinning up about 15 feet in the air like a kite.

Ginger, the Jewish deli to which you refer by the A&P was the Appetizing Store which I fondly spoke of earlier! I also remember an actual butcher on Elmont Rd near the back way to walk to the high school - sawdust on the floor and all! I can’t imagine all the health code violations they would be cited for today...

I hit the mother lode last night when I opened a box in my attic to find a number of items that I thought my ex-wife threw away during my divorce. Among them were all of my report cards from K-12; all of my Hebrew school report cards; class pix from kindergarten + 2 other years (4th grade? 6th grade) and more. I loved reading the teacher's comments from so many years ago. At the reunion a few of us were trying to remember our elementary school teachers. So here were mine (compliments of my old report cards):

K - Ms. Curtis

1st - Mrs. DeJongh

2nd - Ms. Fauci

3rd - Ms. Saunders

4th - Mr. D'Arrigo

5th - Ms. LaVenia

6th - Ms. Novick

Were any of you in any of my classes? If not, do you remember any of your teachers?

Frank - You mentioned the Island Garden. Boy does that bring back memories. I never saw a concert there but did go almost every month with my father and brother to see pro wrestling ( Antonio Rocco, The Sheik, Bruno Sammartino and lots more). I also used to go there to see the LI Nets with Julius Irving (ie - Dr. J). By the way. do you remember when we played Roosevelt HS in I believe the Nassau County quarter finals and a riot broke out? Dr. J was on the court on their side.

I remember going to Island Garden to see the Dave Clark Five with Pat Mincone. (I also saw DC5 at Carnegie Hall, Ed Sullivan Theatre, and the Belair Theatre.  It was easier to get tickets for them than The Beatles!)

Roy, seems as if we spent a lot of time together - like 2nd thru 6th grade. I had Miss Wallace (afternoon) kindergarten, and Mrs. Fenton in first grade. But dont ask me what I did 2 weeks ago😉

Roy, I had Mr.  D’Arrigo in fourth grade. I loved him. He became a superintendent of schools in Windsor Locks, CT after receiving his doctorate and when I was applying for jobs after college graduation I interviewed with him and was offered a job there.  I had already accepted a job in Ledyard, CT so I had to decline the job offer.  I was a teacher in Groton, Ct for most of my career and a number of years ago I saw a flyer with his name listed. I contacted him & found out he was about to retire.  I sent him a funny children’s book about a principal’s retirement written by Robert Munch as a retirement gift. Received a lovely note back from him. Unfortunately he died a number of years ago so I never got to see him again.

Virginia-- I think the deli you were writing about in your post is the same one that has a funny story attached to it for me. Before moving to Elmont, we lived in Brooklyn. Every Sunday, come hell or highwater, my Dad and I would go to the local deli and get various assortments for Sunday lunch. We got friendly with the man behind the counter, and he and my dad would kibbitz back and forth. Fast forward, and we move to Elmont. We go to the local deli, and who is there? The same guy! You would have thought they were brothers, the way they greeted each other!

Roy--Here is the list of my teachers at Dutch Broadway.

Third-Mrs. Diemer

Fourth-Miss Sinrod

Fifth-Mr. D'arrigo

Sixth-Mr. Bishop

Did anyone have Miss Macchia at EMHS? Or Miss what's her name, for music--NOT Miss Rollins, but the other one--she was beautiful, blonde, had once been a "Miss Something", in a pagent. Anyone remember her name?

I found this online, which may be of interest to some of you, about a bunch of teachers but I don't know if it will come out as a link.  If not, just paste cut & paste it.

Susan - I believe the music teacher you're thinking of was Miss Pinto. She was a hot blonde with a high ponytail. All the boys drooled over her!!!

Speaking of music, did anyone have Mr. Allman? Nice guy but a bit of a sad sack.

Can you download pix to this page? I found some great old pix to share. If you can, how do you do it?

Susan Baum (Schloss)

Yes, Roy, Miss Pinto! She WAS a beauty, I can see her in my mind's eye right now. I wonder whatever happened to her. She was a good teacher, too. We studied West Side Story, which had just come out as a movie. I also remember hearing about jazz muscians from her: Art Tatum, Jack Teagarden, names I never heard before or after her class.

Roy, I think there is an issue uploading photos because that would use up the limited free data we get. Perhaps you can upload to Dropbox and post the link here? That’s what was done with reunion pics. We might also be able to email the class with the link to the file on Dropbox.

I saw Vanilla Fudge and the Rascals at the Island Garden also. Saw Tiny Tim at the Fillmore- he was like something from another planet.    Speaking of music, I had Reno Allman in the 7th grade. He would put on a classic music album, doze off, and we would launch our paper airplanes with impunity.  I also recall the seating in his classroom as being bleachers. Does anyone else remember that?

I also saw the Rascals at the Island Garden ... I wonder if the girl i took (a classmate) remembers ... Does anyone know what year that was?

I remember an oldies concert at Island Gardens with the Platters, Jay and the Americans and several other groups. Also remember a New Years Eve @ Community Gardens with the The Happenings and Randy & the Rainbows.

Everyone of us has people who have passed through our lives and have been a great influence. For me, one of these people was Mrs. Gevitz, one of my junior high science teachers. I learned a lot from her in the classroom about science but even more important I learned a number of life lessons from her by the way she talked to us and treated us in the classroom. I found out yesterday that Mrs. Gevitz passed away just a few months ago at age 95. I wish I had the opportunity prior to directly tell her how I turned out and how she was a part of it. Somehow I believe she can hear me right now from 1 floor above and has a big smile on her face. RIP Mrs. Gevitz!
