Annette Ivory Dunzo

. Upon graduating from Hampton Institute, I was honored with a Fulbright fellowship for study in Mexico. For a year I lived with a Mexican family and studied at the Universidad Autonoma of Guadalajara… Exciting times as I traveled to other universities throughout Mexico with two other Fulbright recipients, discussing in great detail the events of civil rights movement during the sixties. Later I attended graduate school at the University of California, Los Angeles where I received the M.A. and Ph.D. degree in Hispanic Literature and Cultures. My research speciality continues to focus on the Afro-Hispanic culture in Spanish society and my dissertation was one of the very first on the topic examining European connections- Blacks of Sub-Saharan African Origin in Spain: Image in the Theater 1500-1700.
The early opportunities at Hampton spurred my love of other cultures and I have travelled to Europe, Africa, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean
After completing graduate work at UCLA, I taught for two years at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) where I developed a course on the topic of Blacks in Spanish literature. Following my stay in Illinois, I began teaching at Howard University where I continue to teach for more than 30 years. During this time I also started my family and I have 2 sons and now 4 grandchildren ==Derrick (president and founder of Computerdoctors 247) and his wife, Mariama, are graduates of Howard, he from the School of Business and she from the School of Engineering—they have 3 children, my grandchildren Naima (12), Naiya (7) and Demari (3). Darrell, my younger son, a music producer, is certified in the Health care field and recently served as Supervisor in a residence at a home for the disabled. He has a son Mikai (5) who like his father earlier participates in a dual language elementary school program (Spanish/English).

I enjoy travelling, golf, line dancing,photography.

I remember that there was a list of places (clubs?) that Hampton administration advised us not to visit in town. Luckily for us, the Administrators themselves never entered these places?
