Pat, how hysterical. I do remember being in the class, I also remember her telling my parents that I was too social, (me, can you imagine). I believe her exact words were I was a "windmill brain". Can you believe a woman of the cloth speaking like that!!!! Hey, I also just realized who your sister was, Carol. Small world, I know her from CCD at Corpus Christi. I was telling her the other day all the fun we used to have and the mischief we would get into!!! Can't wait to see everyone at the reunion!!!

Pat !
I remember that day clearly !! LOL !! We were all in it together from what I remember, you were going to spill your guts how we all felt about Sr. Patricia and the rest of the class was "suppose" to back you up - well you told her off and the rest of us just sat there and said nothing! I remember how mad you were at all of us! I just remember her calling Sue Reale and I "DING & DONG" and that we were the "blind leading the blind" talk about giving a poor kid low self esteem! Haha! Till this day I hate working with numbers! Darlene - how are you? My sister said she ran into you over the summer, I guess her son had a swim class w/ yours.... small world! Looking forward to seeing you all at the reunion!!

take care!! ~Karen

Hey Darlene!
I can't remember the nickname for Mr. Laffin. I'm guessing you might not want to post it, but I'm very curious!
Karen O, I can't believe you and I go as far back as kindergarten! I still have the black and white class photo! My oldest memory with you was that yours was the first house I ever played at after school! I thought it was soooo cool to take your bus home. I was a "walker" so taking the bus was thrilling!
Pat, were you aware that Mr. Childs died? I can't recall how I learned that, but I'm pretty sure it's accurate.
Looking forward to seeing you all!

Hi Pat, Karen, Darlene, (I think Wanda was in that class as well) and all members of Sr. Pat's -

I think we can all admit we have PTSD from that class! I remember the humiliation of being called up to Sr. Pat's desk so she could yet again drill into my head the rules of algebra: she would say "what you do to one side you do to the other" taking her pencil and repeatedly circling my incorrect equation so deeply that it ripped the paper - she really was a bit wacky!

Not to mention the first day sophomore year when I walked into her Geometry class! She threw up her hands, rolled her eyes, and said "Oh, no, it can't be you again - there must be a mistake!" NICE!

Amy- we will tell you at the reunion what the name was and all the "counting" stories. He had to know.

Who was in the class with me when all the windows were open, curtians blowing, and one of the sisters, can't remember who, said how cold it was but couldn't figure out why-
All I have to say is the 1 thing I learned at South was "Be the best possible person you can be" Sister Kevina.

I read a lot of the responses you all wrote. It must have been a whole different world on the other side of the school where the smart kids were. I am laughing my ass off reading about the sumpin' sumpin' about somebody telling off a teacher. I remember telling off Mrs. Bennet when she said I came up with some of the most ridiculous answers. The thing that made me flip was the fact I thought I had the answer nailed. Then BAM! She dropped the bomb. I have never been the same since. My life is ruined. Naw. Just Kidding. I do remember how the class of '83 refused to conform, and were the worst class at selling those f&%king magazines. I look forward to seeing all of you again.

I am with James. I think I was in all the wrong classes because nobody ever told any of the teachers off-even though we wanted to. I have sat here and read all the posts and have laughed and laughed and wished I had been part of that scene.

Does anyone remember Algebra with Mrs. Horst? I recall Matt Ranelli coming up with a funny scheme. Mrs. Horst had a habit of dropping her book onto her desk after copying whatever on the board. So, while her back was to us writing on the board, we all picked up our books and simultaneously dropped them on our desks when she dropped hers. It was hysterical! For some reason, she didn't find it funny!

Gianel,

I teach at Cheney Tech, and some of my kids have come from Belizzi. They tell me you can see the "clean spots" on the walls in each room where the crosses used to be. Too funny. True? East Catholic is right next door, and we are playing our Thanksgiving game against them. A little bit of deja-vu.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. So thanks for all your work, Kim.

Mary,
That's too funny! I'll have to check. I know that some of the rooms still have the old speakerboxes on the walls from the old PA system.

Hey Mary, Here is also a wierd one for ya. In my last command, My Commanding General played for Northwest Catholic. When I told him I played for South, he just gave me that rivalry stare. He was pretty cool with knowing we used to kick their ass every Thanksgiving Day game. YEAH BABY! LETS GO SOUTH! LETS GO SOUTH......for the winter.....and get the hell outta here.

Hello Everyone, does anybody know how John Santoro past away? I was surprised to read his obit. I knew he joined the Navy but I lost track of him as the years went by.

10/05/08 10:25 PM #27

Karen Ouellette

I saw Lucy Romano Otoole, Michele Pacocha Stevens, Katharine Haley and Celine Gionfriddo Carbin last night. I heard that John Santoro's death was under investigation :(

Pat, I applaud you telling off a teacher. Cripes, they scared the hell out of me! I always got in trouble for talking. My desk was moved a few times here and there. Fran Laffin took me and I can't remember who into the corridor because I was laughing at Michele.

Anyone take Sr Alice's horrible rotten Algebra II class? I can't believe I passed that thing.

Mr. O'Connor died. He died the day before i posted this. I do not think it was a house fire. He learned his lesson about smoking in bed, face down, a long time ago. You have to remember, this guy would pole vault 10 feet at 45 years old. He was a Woodstock survivor. He probably died from his vices, but he ran a lot so he also died in perfect health. The guy was real. Semper Fi!

Jim, when and where did he die?

Brenda Fetherston (Hall)

Amy-
I am laughing hysterically about your post regarding Mrs. Horst's class and Matt's ingenious plan! I had completely forgotten about that! I think I had my head in the desk for the rest of the class, fearing that if she saw me unable to stop laughing I'd be headed straight for Sasso's office!
Speaking of Sasso. . .he is the princial of a pretty elite private school here in Atlanta. Amazing! Dave Widell (who used to live in the neighborhood right next to mine in ATL) figured out that it was the same Donald T. years ago when we saw an ad for the school in a church bulletin!
Anyone remember the Spring Break trip with the nuns to FLA when a few of us were late for the bus at Disney (causing all of us to miss mass) and got Saturday detentions for it??!!
Thanks, Kim for all of your hard work on the reunion and this great site!

10/14/08 04:46 PM #31

Amy Carroll (Blackwell)

Brenda,
Glad someone rememberd the trick on Mrs. Horst! There are so many posts and memories people have shared that I have no memory of! Ouch..it hurts getting old! I don't remember a Mr. O'Connor who died and I dont' remember any trip to Fl (ok, I know I didn't go, but I don't remember it anyhow!).

Jennifer Paul (Picken)

Amy,

I too don't remember a Mr. O'Connor. Was he a coach? I also don't remember all the memories posted here but maybe I wasn't in those classes. I do remember the senior FL trip. I remember after we checked in to the hotel several rooms were robbed by the cleaning staff. We were all asked to chip in some money so that the people who got robbed would have some spending money. Does anyone remember that?

10/21/08 08:53 AM #33

Debra DePietro (Policino)

Yes, Brenda and Jennifer, I remember that FL trip as well! I believe I was one of the people who walked late onto the bus ... weren't we freshmen on that trip? And yes, it scares me how much I have forgotten (how could that be, I'm still only 25!). This site is so much fun and I love reading about everybody, thanks Kim! You're the best!

Brenda Fetherston (Hall)

I also remember that half of our bus headed to FL ended up with pink eye! (Did we really take a BUS to FL??!!)

Mr. O'Connor taught English and was the track coach - or at least I thought so. . .not sure why he's not in the yearbook. Did he leave before our senior year? I do know that he went to Wethersfield High from South - and taught for 20 years combined. My aunt saw him walking in Wethersfield just before he passed away and said he didn't look well - his death, however was unexpected (according to the obit). Sad.

Who was the teacher (kinda "granola" guy) who did a guitar solo / singing in a talent show to the "Rising Sun" song? It went on and on forever and I don't think he sang/played his guitar sober. He also had a fire at his home and we rallied to help him? Who was that? Anyone remember?

10/22/08 02:06 PM #36

Darlene Lepore (Sikorski)

Amy,
I believe that was Mr. O'Connor. He did end up moving to Wethersfield, he lived on Wells Rd near Goff Rd. Yes, he was the track coach and did teach English, good of Brenda to remember that!!!
Hope to see everyone at the reunion!

Darlene

HI ALL!! I just caught on that this is here, also...behind the eight ball in high school and still behind it...anyway, Amy, it was 'Digger' - Laffin's nickname and he made religion class very disturbing!!! Is it Karen McNamara who sees him - would you just let him know I said that.....We were all warned about his habit and how he sat the girls in the front and sure enough on the first day of class who wound up sitting right in front of his unique lecturing technique but Olimpia Faenza and myself. We kept 'count' with tally marks at the top of our notebooks to distract ourselves. It was like living in an SNL skit day after day - amusing, yet, disturbing!!!! Great to hear that all of you are doing well....Ciao-Ciao, Claudia

Hi All, I just realized this post a response was here as well. I 've been reading all your comments and getting a kick out of them. Amy I read your comments about Mr. Laffin and was saying to myself I know his nickname but Claudia beat me to it. Looking forward to seeing everyone in November. I have been to all the reunions except the 5 year although I remember the party at Ranellis after (well some of it anyway). Kim your doing a great job!!! Kim did you know Deb's coming?? I got an email from her today.. Colleen

OH MY GOD! How could I have forgotten? Now that Claudia has reminded me I have that gross image in my head. I can picture his nasty tall self, beard, in khaki pants at the front of the class etc etc.
Thanks a lot Claudia!
