Could it have been Bye Bye Birdie?

Joyce Weiner

Nope.  I saw Bye Bye Birdie in NYC on a separate trip (my aunt, who lived there, took me to see it).  But I think I just remembered what it was--A Man for All Seasons, which played on Broadway in the early 1960's.  It took me a few days, but I finally got it!

Should anyone care to read it, I have a short story in the debut issue of an e-zine called Flash Bang Mysteries. As the name suggests, the editors want crime and mystery fiction of between 500 and 750 words. My little opus is called "Brianna's Way."

Feel free to comment, positively or negatively, if you're so inclined.

For those of you who took biology, I saw Mrs. Doris Benfer tonight. My granddaughter had a birthday party. Her friend's grandmom came to pick her up. We started talking, trading stories about where we had lived. When I mentioned that I went to Haverford, she told me she had taught biology there. What a coincidence! She remembers so many from our class. A delightful lady!

Very cool!  So she was very close to our age?   I think I may have had her for homeroom.....

Betty Wismer (Becker)

Carol, thanks so much for your post.  I had Doris Benfer as a Sophomore for Biology and it was her first year of teaching out of Gettysburg.  She was fantastic.  I don't think there was a student that didn't like her and she was very bright and demanded plenty from us. I kept in touch with her for numerous years then drifted. She lives in Broomall and taught for years at Delaware Community College.  I should track her down again. If you should bump into her again tell her Betty Wismer Becker says hello.

I very much wanted to take BIO II with her but my

German III class conflicted and I had a fit but my mom won that battle. Oddly enough I married a German, lol.

That is so neat. I had her for Biology 2 and loved the class; even considered a college biology major because of her. She was an outstanding teacher. For whoever crosses paths with her again, please pass along a big thank you from another one of her HHS students!

Mrs. Benfer was one of my favorites! I had her for Biology I and II and for home room (I think we were grouped alphabetically and stayed in the same HR all 3 years of Senior High. I remember she was married our first year and left to have her first child when we graduated. Our home room gave her a rocking chair as a gift. I would love her to know the tremendous, wonderful and lasting effect she had on my life.

Thanks to all of you I , too, recall her with fondness. I had her for homeroom but I don't remember the rockingchair gift.

She was an enjoyable teacher and had infinite patience with us. Judy B. used to stand in the hallway talking to Ronnie T and I to Roy Stevens and we would get into room just the before the bell ended its ring. Those were the days!!!!

She remembered so many by name. Isn't it wonderful to have had such a positive impact on all of us? She said she was right out of college when she came to Haverford, so she was only a few years older.

I too, had Mrs. Benfer for Bio I and II, she was an outstanding teacher and mentor.  We spent hours in and after class discovering all there was to know on the subject.  She is the reason I went into Nursing and practiced in that profession for over 40 years.  I never lost my quest for learning.  I remember spending time over  at her new house painting and planting flowers, we all thought she had the perfect life and I wanted so much to be just like her!!  Thank you all so much for sharing those memories.  Judy Riddell (ODonnell)

I too had her for biology.  I think she got married the year I had her (sophomore or junior?).  I remember that she was friendly with another science teacher..... ?????

Hi Susan. I think her friend's name was Miss Chin. As I recall, she was a hot little number who had the boys crazy. She was fun.

Such fun to hear her name.  I bumped into her a number of years ago and she was the same lovely lady as I remembered from High school.  I remember we had a wedding shower for her at her apartment!

Miss Chin was the student teacher. She was the first woman I ever saw with so much mascara( cannot believe I remember that, and cannot remember three months ago). We had such a good time in that class. Miss Chin graduated, and came to teach the next year. I would love to hang out with her during study hour. Such good memories!

I had Doris Benfer for both Bio I and II.  Her Bio II class was especially rigorous; I remember that we dissected a mountain cat (do I have that right?). I went off to college very well prepared for my biology courses there.  I also remember how super-nice she was.  I'm so glad to hear that she's doing well.

Hello!

I enjoyed looking at the reunion pictures and was sorry that I did not know this forum exists, and that I could not attend.  Does the class have a get together every year?

Anyone out there live here in Colorado?

Hi Barry!

Where in Colorado are you? I moved to Colorado Springs in 1999 to begin a job at the American Numismatic Association (Director of Education), met my husband, Bill, retired in 2006. We now snowbird between the Springs and Ocala, Florida.
