Comments:

Have been in New Orleans since h.s.; went to Tulane, graduated in '73, got a 2nd degree in '74, started working for N.O./La Health Dept in '74. Then went to grad school (Tulane School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, going part-time while working full-time; switched to Charity Hospital - infection control office - for 10 yrs. Had a little side gig w/ 2 friends doing food booth at New Orleans Jazz Fest for several yrs; parlayed that venture into a food concession at '84 World's Fair. Meanwhile, met a native Houston girl in N.O. at Mardi Gras, was married for 21 yrs and thereby came the 2 daughters. Bought a house in '87 and moved my mother from Houston and she lived in a unit of the house for 10 yrs and spoiled the crap out of her 2 granddaughters, the 1st of whom was born on her birthday! (Since I am an only kid, this event was momentous; the 2nd kid was born on Thanksgiving Day, making both births special.) My father unfortunately died suddenly in June '70, 2 weeks after my freshman yr. Experienced feast & famine in the oil bust of the late 80s, eventually working for the public school system doing the environmental work in the facilities section at 130 campuses. Hurricane Katrina has changed my life at its most basic level. I've lived through 4 yrs of "the roller coaster ride from hell", moving back into my house this Jan ('09) 3 1/2 yrs after the storm. I'm still not back to anything resembling a "normal, stable" life. Have continuously played music since starting in 7th grade band at Hogg. Played French horn exclusively until the late 70s when I fell into a group of characters who gathered occasionally and played loose-knit jazz from bar to bar in the French Quarter. Picked up a trumpet at that point and started learning and eventually got pretty good - after several yrs. Have played in several groups over the last 20 yrs. During all this time, have experienced things in N.O, especially during Mardi Gras season, that even most locals here don't do. My 2 kids are truly incredible creatures; both got into the best h.s. in La (Ben Franklin) and are now in college. The older one is also working fulltime for a social activist organization and will probably do some minor stuff like change the fabric of society as we know it. The younger one is doing a fall sem now in England as a jr. I shudder (and salivate) at the thought of what she might do to the world someday. TTFN - I'll try to throw some more fables into the mix later when I have more time.

Happy BDay, Ruthie! "Ob-la-di, Ob-la da, life goes on, bra, la la how the life goes on..."

Can't make it to the reunion in Oct. WAY too much going on, including a big conflict that Sat. But hope to see you sometime. "We'll meet again, don't know where, don't when, But I know we'll meet again some sunny day....Please say hello, to the folks that I know..."
(From the end of Dr. Strangelove, as Slim Pickens was riding the Bomb.)

Then there's always the Big 5-Oh in '19!
