I also knew Ronald Ridgeway.  He was a part of a small group of us that hung out together.  Doubt much if he remebers me.  I was shocked when I heard that he had been KIA in Viet Nam.  Of course there a lot of crazy tales going around about him at the time.  Then years latter I was very surprised to hear that he was alive and coming home.  I was glad that he was alive and in good shape.  Also glad to hear that he got married and has had a great life.

I only knew Ronnie on a casual basis.  Even so, if you knew him at all, you knew it was, who he was, that gave him the strength to survive.  I remember him as outgoing, cracking jokes, and fun to be around.  Ronnie:  Thank you for your service!!!

I knew a Ridgeway at Berry and Burbank. Any idea where this Ridgeway lived?

Todd #3233 ~ Ronald would of course have lived in the district of Sam Houston so that would have included Burbank and Berry. Patricia #3229  was his next door neighbor SO Patricia where did you live?

Ronnie and I were neighbors in the mid to early 1960's. We both lived on Carothers Street off Homested Road. (Northeast Houston)...Smiley High School District border line was about 2 streets over from my house on Carothers Street,Smiley was about 5 miles from my house whereas the Jeff Davis (Forced Bussing) district was about a distance of 20-30 miles from our house on Carothers. I was fortunate to have lived off Jensen Drive and Bennington Street long enought to complete Junior High School at Burbank Jr. high, then we moved to Northeast Houston and was forced to go to Jeff Davis in lieu of Smiley. I would have loved to have followed my Burbank Classmates to Sam,but we were poorer than dirt and circumstances caused us to move at the time I entered High School :-(

How Ronnie ended up going to Sam Houston would be a mystery to me unless they moved as he was about to enter High School, but we were neighbors at the time he and I would be in High School.

That busing decision had an effect on a lot of kids. We were lucky that we didn't have to be split and was able to continue on with our friends from Kindergarden at Scarborough then on to Patrick Henry and then to Sam Houston. We lived on Lakewood Dr. Which is 59 @ Jensen. We still are in touch with several from the old neighborhood. Pinewood Village ~ which ran from Little York to Our street Lakewood (then the bayou) and from Foy Lane to Bentley.

Patricia from the class of 71 shows on her profile that she lived on Deerfield (not sure where that is) she went to Burbank Jr. High so it is probably over off Berry and Helmer/VanMolen area.

It's nice to see that several people remember Ronnie ~ I'm not sure if he knbows about this site. I may try and get in touch with him and tell him about it. It would be interesting to hear some of his was stories.

Take care,

Judy

I don't think Ron Ridgeway is on Facebook, but his wife Marie is.  I didn not know him, but read the article and remembered the name.  I think he was a year behind me in school.  But  would love to hear his stories.  He is definitely a hero in my book.

Judy, Yes we lived on Deerfield and Ronnie was our neighbor. Ronnie, his mother and brother moved there on the mid sixties. Deerfield is between Fulton and Bauman Rd. just behind where Northline Mall use to be. Went by there after the reunion last year, it was not like it was when we lived there. So sad to see the old neighbor hood decline so badly.

Ronald Ridgeway's story is absolutely amazing. What incredible resolve and heroism in the most brutal of situations. His story should be a movie. Semper fi.

Phyles #3237 ~ Thanks for letting me know Marie Ridgeway was on Face book. I sent her a private message to not only have her thank Ronald for his service but to also invite them to join us her on this SAM site and for 5th Friday Lunches, I told her there were several that remembered Ronnie and several that wanted to extend their graditude for his sacrifice he made. I also told her that I was not able to attend the 5th Friday lunches due to not living in Houston any longer and I still work. I extended an invitation to join me and my family for lunch or dinner and we could come in their direction if interested. I will let you know if I hear back from her.

Patricia # 3238 I thought that was the area you lived in but was not sure. My sister still lives over off Berry and Irvington. Her street has remained the same for the last 40 plus years that shre has owned her home. Her daughter attened Sam and her son as well until his senior year. Our old neighborhood off Little York and Jensen has changed since we lived there but we still know a couple of people that live in the old hood and they have no problems.

Lana #3239- Yes it would be great to meet them and talk to if he is willing to do so. I will keep everyone posted on the reply I get. Some Vets do not care to talk about their time in the service yet some do.

Maybe be able to throw a gathering together to meet and extend our thanks to him in person. I know my niece has mentioned she would love to meet and talk with him.

Ron and I are looking forward to the 50th Reunion , we visited the old neighborhood a few years ago and it brought back some fond memories and a few ones that can stay in the archives,  Went by my parents home and alot of memories came rushing back of all the good times and what a close knit community we had.  We still miss those ten for a dollar prices hamburgers.

Well after work today I'm off to Houston ~ We grew up in Pinewood Village Neighborhood which was from Little York to Lakewood (street we lived on) and between Foy Land and Bentley. We had  a tight knit neighborhood and all us kids knew each other from Elementary school (Scarborough) all throough school and graduated from Sam. We are still in touch with several and this week-end we are on a mission to find the starting spot of Hall's Bayou. That is the bayou that ran behind Lakewood ! Bobby Hopper my sister and I have been talking about finding the starting spot so I thought I would see if they wanted to do that this week-end. I will swing by Sam and check on what's going on there.  Martha do you want to join us?

Have a great week-end

Judy

WOW!!!  What a great time at the 50th Reunion!! For those of you that did not go all I can say you should have been there.  Great food, great music, great friends and a lot of beautiful women. I had a fantastic time and enjoyed seeing all my classmates and old friends. The only thing missing was the bricks, but we all decided we would wait until they were available. See y'all in 50 more. May you live until y'all are 102 years old and the last voice you hear is mine!!! Love you guys and ladies! :)

I agree, the 50th reunion was fun and I enjoyed seeing some "old" friends and making new ones! Thanks to you who organized it and made it a success - I know you worked endless hours! Hope to see you all who missed out next reunion!

Today is my 69th birthday. I still don't know why it doesn't appear on this site, but that doesn't stop it from happening. Had a wonderful time at the 50th reunion. Great to visit with some friends from the past. The best part of it was getting to talk with some folks I did not know back in High School and finding out that they turned out to be petty good people after all. There's something to be said for "old north side values." It was wonderful to meet up with the zag Boys from years ago too. I almost wore my ag jacket but when I put it on I could not get it zipped up. Amazing how those things shrink up over the years! Lol.

I attended the 50th Reunion and had a wonderful time.  We were fortunate to be raised with a great group of guys and gals.  I know I saw some people that I had not seen in forty years, and yet, it seemed like just the other day.  Thanks to Phyles and Mike as well as the other organizers for a memorable occasion.

Johnny & I had a great time.  Johnny connected with some old running buddies.  I visited with Robert Woodall who lived a few doors down and Betty Roark who ran the roads with me.  Wonderful music, as usual.  Enjoyed seeing everyone and even if they did not know this under classman, I remembered them and can say everyone look great.

I thought I was going to a High School party! But when I got there the place was full of "old folks." So I just joined right in and had a blast anyway!
