Peter Olafsen (1967)

I live in Iowa, Winneshiek County. Was out in Seattle for a wedding. Flew from Minneapolis. On the shuttle to the car park my wife and I were alone except for the driver and two women, one older than me. As I listened to them talk I detected a southern accent. I mentioned that to the older woman and asked where she was from. She said Texas. I said that I grew up in Texas. I asked where in Texas and she said Houston. I said that I grew up in Houston and I was curious as to where in Houston. She said the north side. I said that I grew up there also. She then volunteered that she had gone to Burbank Elementary and Sam Houston, graduating in 1963. I confess that I did not get her name. I then asked where they were headed after they got their car. She said they were headed to Decorah, Iowa, where they now live. Decorah is in Winneshiek County. What are the odds that two folks who graduated from Sam Houston would end up in the same county in Iowa? As we are frequently in Decorah, and given that Decorah is a small town, I hope to see her again and get her name so that I can share that with you all.

HI PETER OLAFSEN,   I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN KNOWING THAT WOMAN'S NAME IN IOWA.  THANKS FOR SHARING.

Mel Moy (1960)

Indeed, the odds against two SHHS graduates running into each other in Winneshiek County Iowa must be awfully long.  Yet coincidences like that seem to happen a lot more than they should.  The other thing you should consider is what if you had not spoken up to find out that you had something in common? What about all the things you might have in common with someone you didn’t bother to notice or speak to?  Ever played the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”?  The premise is that everything or everybody In life is six or fewer steps away in connection.  Think about that the next time you pass a homeless person needing help or the next time you flip the bird to someone who cut you off in traffic.  It could’ve been a fellow SHHS graduate—or Kevin Bacon.

That is odd but they say "It's a small world" Let us know if you ever run into her again. Maybe if more of us would take a moment and talk to a stranger the world might be a nicer place.

Hope if your getting some rain your enjoying it. We had our burn ban lifted yesterday and I have not heard this morning if they have caught the excape convict yet....

The new buildings are coming along at Sam. It is cool how they are bringing in the black and gold on the buildings.

Peter, Great story but how did a kid from the north side of H-town wind up in Iowa? Just wondering. Good to hear from you anyway. Keep in touch and God bless.

Peter Olafsen (1967)

Thanks to all who have commented on the serendipitous meeting I had in Minneapolis with the 1963 Sam Houston graduate. I shall endeavor to find out her name and post it here. Thanks to all who reminded us that speaking to a stranger more often yields positive outcomes, rather than negative experiences. This summer in Germany, Poland, and Latvia we had many such experiences with folks more than eager to visit about all sorts of things.

In answer to Randy Tolman (1967)... There are many of us who have strayed far from the North Side. Len Wolff is outside of Seattle. My sister is in Tempe. There are others. My story is pretty simple. My pastor recommended a college in Kansas. I attended Bethany College for 2 years. I transferred to Luther College because they had a better department in my area and my Norwegian parents thought I might learn Norwegian. I met my wife and we married the day before graduation. After a stint in the US Army, I came back to Luther to add on an education major. My wife and I got teaching jobs in the area. We liked the area..except for the really cold winters..raised two boys and then retired after 36 years of teaching. We moved to a place in the hills and woods out in the country. So here we are.

I see you are I big Astros fan. I am a big Boston fan. (My folks were from Boston) I sure hope they get to meet in the playoffs. That would be epic.

It would be interesting to see or hear where we have all lived in since Sam.......

Mine want take long I was born and raised on the Northside of Houston ~ when I graduated in 1971 I moved over off Gulf Freeway near Airport Bvld. on Joplin.....Lived there 3 years and moved back to Northside, Shady Lane Apts. neighbors with Connie and Bobby Hopper and Fred Trevino....That was some fun times. Moved from there and went out to Aldine area ~ got married 1976 ~ divorced in 1980 (moved several times during that period but all in Houston) Got Cancer ~ and got cured (Thank You Lord) Then I met Danny (we worked together) that was in 1981 and we have been together ever since. Bought a house not far from Sam and sold it and moved to Centerville 15 years ago and have lived here ever since on the same acreage and that's where we will be until the end of our time here on earth......I never even left Texas until I was grown.....Been to Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana (most of those traveling to Florida

Where have you been?

Gene Castleberry (1970)

After I graduated in 1970 I moved to Oxen Hill, MD and worked for the FBI as a voucher examiner for a year.  When I had been there for nearly a year, the drawing for the draft was coming up and it was my turn.  The previous 2 years my number was high so I figured it would be low this year so I joined the Marine Corps to get into a nice air conditioned position (2542 - Comm Center Man).  I worked in the main communications center that was located wherever the General was located.  (By the way, my number was high again and I would have never been drafted; but, I enjoyed the military and I learned a lot while I was in there.)  While in the military, I went to MCRD Parris Island, SC - boot camp; MCB Camp Lejeune, NC - infantry training; MCRD San Diego, CA - Comm Center School; MCB Camp Pendleton, CA - more training; Okinawa - for 4 months; Battalion Landing Team for 3rd BN 4th MAR, 3rd MARDIV where we were stationed on ships for 6 months in the waters of Vietnam so that we would go in if needed (thankfully we were not needed) - and during that 6 months we did make a stop or two for a few days at Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines; after the BLT went back to Okinawa - for 2 months; MCRD Parris Island, SC - work in the Comm Center; and then my last duty station was MCLB Albany, GA where I received an Honorable/Medical compensable discharge in Dec 1975.  From there I moved all over the USA.  I stayed in Albany, GA and attended college for a little while.  Met a girl and followed her to Denver, CO and then we went to Rosepine, LA where we got married in March 1977.  We moved to Liberty, TX for a short period and then I got a job with IMCO as a mudman in the oil field.  I checked the drilling fluids while the drilling rig drilled for oil.  I went to school for that job in Houston, TX and first went to Wyoming after graduation; but, they transferred me to Ventura, CA as soon as I got to Wyoming.  I was in Ventura for a year and was then transferred to Santa Maria, CA for a year and then transferred to Bakersfield, CA.  After a year there, I requested a transfer to Cyril, OK to get nearer my relatives.  I was there for about 10 to 12 months before I was laid off due to the bottom falling out of the oil field and numerous drilling rigs sat idle. My family and I (had 4 sons by that time) moved to DeRidder, LA to join my parents.  We were there just a few months before we moved back to Albany, GA and I went to work as a Federal Civil Service employee at the MCLB Albany, GA.  While with the government we have lived around Lynn, MA; Saint Marys, GA; Roswell, NM; Kingsland, GA; Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA; and then back to Saint Marys, GA where we currently have resided for many, many years.  I am now retired and have wanted to attend one of the class reunions; but, have never had a free moment where I was able to attend.  Maybe I can now.  One thing for sure is I am definitely tired of moving!!!

Janice Lewis (Williamson) (1971)

I grew up on the northside of Houston and after graduating in 1971  moved to an apartment in Spring Branch and attended University of Houston and worked at a new company in Houston called The Gap. After marriage in 1974 we moved to southeast Houston/Pasadena until 1975 when we moved to Anchorage, Alaska. The Alaska economy was beginning to get shaky so in 1979 we moved back to Texas to the Pearland area. I loved living so close to the beach but a with a husband that traveled out of the county so much I wanted to live closer to family. In 1990 we moved to Kingwood for the next 12 years. After my husband passed and the children grew up I moved to Spring for a few years then to Conroe with Larry Moore. We  had some great years together traveling all around the U.S. and then on to England, Scotland, Ireland and our last trip together to Paris.  I enjoy living and working in Conroe plus my good friends Cindy Berry and Waymon Wooley live a short distance from me.  I have a 10 minute commute to Conroe HS where I teach Government and Economics and I am close enought to Houston so I can volunteer at The Hobby Center on weekends.

Buddy Vassar (1967)

Melvin J "Buddy" Vassar born 10/6/48 in an old farm house at the northwest corner of Tidwell and McGallion (where the Catholic church is now located). I was told a doctor made a house call to our home that day after the fact, and all was well.

My memory kicks in around 1950-51 when we moved to our new home on Langdale (across from the eventual location of SHHS campus). The house was built by my Dad and others. There were my parents, five sisters and me.

About 1953 we moved to a bit larger home located at 617 Harkness at the corner of McGallion. House again built by my Dad and relatives. I think we were a happy bunch. I was happy.

Summer 1960 we sold the house and our family moved to 8011 Werner into a new house built by Smith Lumber Co. That was home until we each sprouted wings and went our own way into the world. My Dad passed in 1976 and my Mom in 1982. We eventually sold that house too.

I miss the early years (old days) and would go back if it were possible but it isn't.

May God Bless Us All !
