So there was a bad gang called the Laura Kopy (sp) Gang that hung out at the North Houston Theater and the pool hall across the street. So we were not allowed to go to the North Houston theater. But mom never said anything about the pool hall. So when we had anywhere from 3 to 6 of us all together we would go to the pool hall on Laura Kopy Street. Of course once in a great while we would break the rules and go to the North Houston theater. Only if they had a show we wanted to see. That's the good thing about having older brothers and a bunch of good friends in our neighborhood. But all in all the Granada theater was the greatest place to hang out and you could not beat the $.19 hamburgers at Prices drive in. Some great memories growing up on the northside.

Several memories from the Granada and Jensen Drive:

When they showed the early Elvis films the "teenagers" as my Mom referred to them were carted away in "Paddy Wagons" for getting too boisterous during the movies. That was back in the day when they would eject you from the movie if you talked during the show. Ushers walking around with flashlights.

I remember one time my Dad dropped me off and I was sitting by myself and two girls sitting in front of me who were probably 11 years old or so (I was probably 10). They both looked at me and asked me if I wanted to come up and sit with them in this provocative voice. I immediately said "No!!" Don't worry, I changed over the years, lol.

If memory serves me correctly there was a Prince's Drive Inn close to the Granada. Also a carnival type thing with bumper cars, etc.

I remember the first movies I saw there. At the time on Saturdays they had a "kiddie" show and I would sit there and watch 3 movies and get out of the theater after dark and my Dad would pick me up. The first movies I saw were "King Kong", "Cyclops" and the "The Day the World Ended". I saw so many horror films there it was ridiculous.

I caught a few movies at the North Houston. The first one I remember was an old Batman movie at night with my mom. I think my Dad and her had an argument and we went to the movies. Fun times. Also a quick story about the theater around the corner from the North Houston I think called the Luell. My Dad took me to see "The Birds and the Bees" with George Gobel and I believe Jayne Mansfield. Knowing my Dad he probably thought the movie was going to be risque and I wouldn't understand what I was seeing. It was basically a comedy but fast forward to about the year 1971 at Randolph Air Force Base where I was stationed. I was a Dental Tech and one day I was working at the Front reception area and I got a call from someone at the Officer's Club. He said that George Gobel was appearing there and had broken a tooth. He asked if he could bring George to the clinic. I verified it was ok and in about 30 minutes I'm standing there talking with George Gobel who I saw as a kid in that movie.

One more quick tale and I'll shut up for a while. That Epson Downs drive in down the street started showing X rated movies. Pretty tame for their time but we would drive behind the theater to catch a glimpse sometimes. If only my Mom and Dad knew what we were up to back then.

Catch you guys later. Behave yourselves.

Hay Danny McCoy, good to hear you're doing well. I remember that to die for '57 Chevy you had. It was the envy of Sam Houston boys. You got it right "God is good." I'm living in Warda, TX where I manage a Christian campgrounds & retreat center. Been here 8 years now. My wife of 52 years went to be with Jesus on January 30, 2021. She's not lost because I know where she is. Keep the faith my friend. Blessings Randy Tolman '67.

RAINBOW ROLLER RINK ... Spent many hours there, it was a passion of mine.y skating partner was Dickie Phillips. We met again years later. We had both saved our skates and outfits from competition. It was great to share old memories. Silly but this stirred up a desire to skate again ... Ha! Probably just bust my butt!!!

John actually owned a Rainbow Roller Rink in Conroe till his death couple years ago. Don't know if you remember the Pettegrew family but my partner was Sheryl Kay. Was your pro Mr Kennedy or one of the others. Many many good memories going in circles.

Diane Grayson (Goloby) (1971)

My brother, Mike Grayson, class of '65, passed away May 19, 2021 from a long illness. His wife Linda Brown Grayson '66, preceded him in death April 2020. They have two daughters, Jamie Grayson and her son Max, and Karen Grayson Kostor and her husband Dave Kostor.

We are grateful to Karen and Dave for their diligent care of Mike and Linda for the past few years, keeping them together at home, and being there with them when they each passed from this life. Their dedication is appreciated by family and friends.

Mike played football at Sam Houston as a quarterback, and baseball with the local teams, the Colt 45s and the Red Sox. He drove his 60s Volkswagon Beetle loaded with his 9 foot surf board on the roof rack, and surfed the beaches of Galveston and Surfside on many weekends, and a few school days!

In August 1968, Mike married Linda Brown '66, and he soon joined the Marines. They were stationed at Camp Lejeune for the rest of his service where their daughter Jamie was born. Mike was a sharpshooter and was on the Marine Corps Rifle Team where he won many competitions. When his stint was done, Mike, Linda, Jamie, and poodle Sean, headed back to Houston where Mike attended the University of Houston for a Bachelors in Accounting, and later a Masters. Their second child, Karen, was born and they lived in Katy, Texas.

Mike's Sam Houston High relatives include cousins Carol Grayson Buchanan '62 and her husband Tommy Buchanan '62, Duane Grayson '68, Bill Grayson, and sister Diane Grayson Goloby '71. He will be missed by family, friends, and Sam Houston classmates.

Thanks to all who have served and are serving this beautiful country. And especially those Sam Houston Tigers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
NEVER FORGET

In Your Honor

Unselfishly, you left your fathers and your mothers,

You left behind your sisters and your brothers.
Leaving your beloved children and wives,

You put on hold, your dreams-your lives.
On foreign soil, you found yourself planted

To fight for those whose freedom you granted.
Without your sacrifice, their cause would be lost

But you carried onward, no matter the cost.

Many horrors you had endured and seen.

Many faces had haunted your dreams.
You cheered as your enemies littered the ground;

You cried as your brothers fell all around.

When it was over, you all came back home,

Some were left with memories to face all alone;
Some found themselves in the company of friends

As their crosses cast shadows across the land.

Those who survived were forever scarred

Emotionally, physically, permanently marred.
Those who did not now sleep eternally

'Neath the ground they had given their lives to keep free.

With a hand upon my heart, I feel The pride and respect; my reverence is revealed
In the tears that now stream down my upturned face

As our flag waves above you, in her glory and grace.
Freedom was the gift that you unselfishly gave

Pain and death was the price that you ultimately paid.
Every day, I give my utmost admiration

To those who had fought to defend our nation.

Carol Roberts (Ross) (1963)

Jerry Deason, thank you for the information about Dorothy Faye.  She and my brother(Paul Roberts, who died earlier this year) were friends at Baptist Temple.  She was such a sweet person and I enjoyed spending time with she and Beverley.

Carol ,I am glad you responded. I did not know that Dorothy went to Sam Houston. I lived on Yale Stree( near Tidwell) and I believe she in the GARDEN OAKS area; yet hardly saw the Conway family. I know that her sister, Beverley, went to Waltrip. I sorry to know that PAUL had passed  away. Did PAUL go to SAM HOUSTON?

Carol Roberts (Ross) (1963)

Jerry Deason,  Paul and I knew Dorothy Faye and Beverley thru Baptist Temple, although if my memory serves me right, Jim Dupree went to Sam Houston.  My brother graduated in 1959 and I graduated in 1963.  I have kept in touch with Beverley thru the years.  I believe I met you and Jane one time many many years ago.  I have no idea where but I was aware that y’all were cousins. Hope all is well with you!

Carol Roberts. Did you know the Caulkins twins (Ron and Don) at Baptist Temple? They are my first cousins. Jerry and Jane went through elementary and highschool with me as I am class of '62. Small Northside world we were in.
