Ah the Granada Theater! What wonderful memories I have of that place. My brothers, Wallace and Fred, accompanied me on Saturday mornings as we walked to the Granada for our weekly outing. I know we didn't go every weekend but when we did that's what made it so special. My fondest memory took place when I was 10 years old in the balcony setting with my first girlfriend. We hugged and kissed so much there is no way I could tell you what the movie was that day. But I certainly remember who she was and I'm not telling you that either. I loved the Granada theater.

Saturday at the Granada was great..a serial (old Buck Rogers), 2 movies, and cartoons. That was the place to be on cold winter days. I would sometimes go with my neighbors (Roys) and their older brother (Johnny) was an usher. He would bring us free candy bars and cokes; we felt like big shots. Johnny was later killed in Vietnam. It was really special when I could tag along with my older brother and his friends since they were five years older. I also remember that the balcony was off limits to kids during the day since they had a tendency to throw popcorn and stuff down below. My family did go a few times at night and we sat in the balcony...nice.

I have a Story to share for my Classmates and others also, Back in 2010 I was cleaning out our closet and came across a large box which contained MANY vynil records I had from the 60's ,70's, and 80's and while taking and sorting out all these albums out, low and behold I found my class ring which I thought I lost 30 years prior, Oh it brought back so many memories, Plus I was in shock and in disbelief when I seen it, and was just overwhelmed, Do any of you still have yours!

My second cousin called me one Saturday morning and asked me if I wanted to go to the Granada to catch the Saturday Matinee. He was in the sixth grade. I was in the fourth grade. I asked him what was playing. He said "Snow White."  I said "Oh, I don't know. I'm not real crazy about Snow White." He said; Aw come on, let's go anyway." I got to thinking about the popcorn, Coke, and Milk Duds. So I said OK, let's go.  His mom let us off at the box office. She was going to pick us up after the show. We asked the lady at the ticket window for two tickets to Snow White. The lady said "Snow White? Snow White's run ended last Wednesday." We asked what was playing. She said "The Mummy's Curse and Dr. Faustus' Horror Chamber." We had a great afternoon. The Coke, popcorn, and Milk Duds never tasted better!

Great Grenada stories. With 5 kids my parents were more than happy to drop us at the Grenada for the day. My favorite snack was Junior Mints, or a giant dill pickle. Still love both.
Also nick Nunez so happy you found your senior ring. Mine was stolen and I sure wish I still had it. I really enjoy the memories when hearing from others who lived the same childhood in the same area. Heart warming.

It always amazed me that everyone would take in Saturday matinees at the Grenada in twos, threes,or more. At exactly 3.5 miles from our front door(s) in North Houston, everything required perfect timing to arrive by 11:45 a.m. I recall Tommy Self, Connally Shields and me always doing  the Granada on Saturday after a Friday night at the Rainbow Roller Rink. The "girlfriend pairings" would take place after coke, popcorn and candy was purchased. I think we were all on rigid budgets back then. I also remember that hand-holding was usually tolerated while hugs and any form of lips meeting brought out the guys with flashlights and double-breasted blazers. Seeing video of Jensen Square burning certainly brought back some GREAT Granada memories

Hi Mary Finch, I barely remember you. Which house did you live in? Our Friday nights were spent like yours. My dada's brother and his family would show up at our house to watch Friday Night Wrassling with Paul Boush. Some great memories. We had one of the first TV's on Turner Drive. I was not aware the Wagner's liked watching wrassling also. Our address was 1902 Turner. Next to us was the crazy lady Reader's. She made our life as kids a nightmare. Next to her, I can't remember there name. Then there were the Hodges and next to them were the Skaggs. They moved to Arkansas I think. Mr. Skaggs died when a tractor turned over on him. To the left side of us were the Berry's. Across from them were the Wilson's, then the Jackowski's. Nicky passed away recently. Then the Salters. The a vacant lot. Then the Bomback's empty house. I may be wrong about that name spelling. Then the Wagner's, Culpepper's, then Harris's on other side of the side street. Across from them were the Gibbons. I am thinking you lived in the house before the Hodge's. I remember a rather well endowed girl living there that the older boys were goggly eyed about. Was that you? I was too young to understand what they were acting goffy about. LOL
I talked to Jimmy Jackowski a few days ago about Gene's passing. He is a Chiropractor in the Dallas area. He, Gene and I graduated in 64.

I remember when the Granada theather opened. I thought the North Houston theather was great until then. We had to walk allot further, but it was worth it !!!

I can remember when there were three choices for movie theaters on or near that part of Humble road (Jensen).  As mentioned Granada, North Houston and a liitle ways east, the Luell.  I think it later became bowling alley/pool hall etc.  Amazing that we could walk from Talent street and spend the entire Saturday without adult supervision and live to tell about it.  LOL

I have great memories of the Granada theater also. Going to Rainbow roller ring was another treat where I got to wear a cute skating skirt outfit made by my grandmother. My grandparents raised me. We also got to go to T&L restaurant. My first job was at Cameron's 5&10 by Western Auto. Worked there 4 years. I also remember North Houston  theater and Epsom zdowns drive in. We also had Irvington and Tidwell theatres. Princess drive in was the Friday night place to be, but always circled through Prices's and Baileys before going home. Most of us grew up in the same economics status at the time because most families were still living a little frugal with memories of war times. It was the greatest time to have grown up in my opinion. See ya!

Actually, there were 4 theaters.Epsom Downs was at the corner of Jensen Drive and Hage St. My family lived on Hage and this was before car speakers. We
we were able to sit on our screened in porch and not only see the movie but hear it also for free. There was also a vacant lot close to the fence, so we would take blankets and lay on the grass and watch movies. There was the North Houston Theater, the Centre theater, which cost 9 cents to get in if you were under 12 years old.I was under 12 for a long time. Then they built the Granada. It cost a whole quarter to get in.I was attending Burbank Elementery when we lived on Hage St. We soon moved to Hopper Rd.and i had to transfert to Barrick Elementery. From there to Burbank junior high then to Sam Houston. Graduated when I was 17,and two weeks later, joined the Navy.

Donna Howard, I think we must have all spent our free time doing very similar things. What a great childhood we had even though we were not rich in money we were rich in joy and family and friends. I wish we could somehow recover those times for the world today.

Jensen Dr was not all that great even back then. I remember Mr Pettigrew almost got beat to death in a robbery at his first parts store on Jensen.  Haven't heard anyone mention that Epson Downs drive in got it's name from the original horse track that was there.  Hardy street had some bad areas also.

Nick Nunez 79'

I lost my class ring (76') in Atlanta airport on the way home from Infantry training at Fort Benning in Nov 76'. Took it off to wash my hands in a bathroom and didn't realize it until I was on the plane to Houston. Lucky for me I had my full name engraved inside (Thank you Balfour!). I flew back through there a couple of weeks later on the way to my first assignment in Germany and some kind soul had turned it in to lost & found. Still have it 45 years later, though I don't wear it much any more. Some days you just get lucky!

As kids our parents did not was going to North Houston Theater, only Granada. But, we would sneak off to North Houston...they had 10 cent popcorn and if the bag had a star on it you got something free...55 years ago my memory is a little clouded. Anyway, we (neighborhood kids) were watching a movie and heard a rumbling sound like thunder. There was a fight at the rear of the theater and guys were rolling all over. We then decided we better stick to the Granada unless older brothers were with us.
