I guess I will drag the VBC discussion out a bit more. I spent many a happy hour at the pool there. I had Ms. Redden as a swim instructor. She was very good. I was on the swim team with Donald at Fonville Jr. High. Went to summer school with Linda. In our 9th grade season, we qualified for several events and were able to participate in the city meet. Our Coach took us all out to eat after the meet. Later he got into some trouble relating to some actions by his roommate. We all thought he was the coolest because he drove a 1957 Chevy Nomad station wagon.

Deepest sympathy to the Rightmer family on the loss of Rick Rightmer.  Another tiger has gone before us.

May the Lord grant peace and blessed memories to his family and friends.

I am very sad to announce the passing of Ronnie Holman on Sunday.  He's my first cousin, but he was like my brother, and he will be sorely missed. We grew up together, we skated together our whole young lives. He

Is survived by his wife, Nancy and his son, Shane.  Ronnie was a Christian and was ready to go meet the Lord. What a blessing that is, in and of itself.  1964

Prayers for all that have posted of Tigers passings.

As we all get older more and more we loose. A reason for getting together and keeping in touch. I recently heard from Marth Buchanan Braden about Ronnie Nix passing away. It was back in May of this year.

Keep in Mind there is a Multi-year reunion coming up in October at Schott's Park in Humble TX.

It would be good to see everyone, our last one was a couple years ago.

Free of charge and bring your own food and drink.

Will get the flyer and post on here!! Hope all of you have enjoyed your Summer and looking forward to Fall.

SAM HOUSTON is one of the oldest public high schools in Texas. It was founded in 1878, a few years after the Allen brothers landed on the shores of Buffalo Bayou. However, you should know that the name of our school was not always Sam Houston High School. Since the school opened in1878, it has undergone six name changes.

In 1955, Sam Houston High School moved from its downtown location on Capital Street to its present location at 9400 Irvington. Although the building has changed the schools’ rich heritage has continued to develop.

Sam Houston has Texas’ oldest high school newspaper, the Aegis, started in 1889, in addition, the world’s first girl Military Drill Squad, formerly known as the Back Battalion, but now called the Tigerettes, originated at our school.

This article is old and before the name was changed to Sam Houston Math and Science and the building torn down and rebuild on the opposite end of the property where the Footbal field and tack were located. The old build was in such bad shape it had to go...... BUT, SAm Houshon High and all our memories live on!!

The old Irvington Drive in down the road from Sam Houston

THE IRVINGTON DRIVE-IN - Movie-goers on Houston's north side in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, had five drive-in theatres from which to choose: The Airline, Shepherd, Tidwell, The Epsom Downs and Irvington.
Here is the Irvington -- located at the corner of Berry and Irvington streets. It opened on November 3, 1950. The 750 car drive continued to operate until the late 1970s, when it was demolished.
The year I graduated it was torn down, Memories of going there and to the others mentioned.

.Thank you, Judy Maxwell, for your posts about the history of Sam Houston High School.

There's a couple of additions to the history I must make.  Perhaps some previous Houstonette Major can verify

the year the name changed from the Black Battallion to the Houstonettes but I feel that

throughout the 1960's and some of the early 1970's, the Houstonettes were thriving and should not be forgotten.

Also, the Allen Brothers founded Houston in 1836, 40 years earlier than when the school was established.  Sorry to correct the post but I couldn't leave out all those good years the Houstonettes were so much of Sam Houston's past.

Glad you commented!

I am not a Historian at all.... Saw the article and thought I would share and see if anyone would join in about it.

I thought about the Houstonette's also. I was never in the club but my next door Neighbor Barbara Mattair was, and that is the name they went by while I went  there 69-70-71.

The date of the landing I didn't even notice but should have know Houston was established earler than 1878. Just goes to show you can't always believe what you read.

I did spent many a nights down in the area they landed, went to Allen's Landing and several of the clubs down town, Mother's Blues and Love Street come to mind. The good ole days.....

Glad you added in on the article, good to see you posting on here.

SHHS History. Did you know Lyndon Johnson taught at Sam when it was downtown? While president, he visited Sam (on Irvington) one evening. He came in a helicopter that landed on the football field, Secret Service and all. I went to see him.

Class of 1965, I was there too when Johnson visited Sam Houston.  It was after President Kennedy was killed.  I was in the classrooms on the left side of the building on Tidwell side, saw  helicopters appear to be practicing landing before he arrived..   Then we saw Johnson out in front and he looked old, I guess the stress of the job to take over aged him.   Although I believe that he did not run for President. Some things you do not forget.

I am in the class of '67. I was in the band, and we got to play Hail to the Chief when LBJ came.

i The Houstonette name was changed from the Black Battalion when Sam Houston was moved to Irvington. I was fortunate enough to serve as major during 1964-65. I also had the honor of presenting roses to Linda and Lucy Johnson's daughters after the helicopter landed. I remember the excitement all day of the helicopters practicing landing by what we call the "new wing". That evening, the Houstonettes had planned for a mother/daughter banquet. We postponed the start time until after President Johnson's speech. I was so proud of the Houstonettes and band, in uniform. The band played beautifully and represented SHHS in grand fashion.

I didn't learn till many years later that my uncle went to Sam Houston at the downtown location. He is 91 and still tells of fond memories of being a tiger, like we ALL do!! 🐅🐅🐅

On the subject of the Irvington Drive Inn. My late husband, Ronnie, lived on Berry Road, we could watch movies from his back yard....wonderful memories! ♥️♥️♥️

My brother, Mike Grayson, '65, shook hands with President Johnson and Johnson asked, "How are you boys doing? "  It was a thrill for the kids to see him and speak with him.
