Playland Park
Posted Wednesday, August 19, 2009 08:49 AM

The first Playland Park was originally located in Houston, Texas in the mid 1940's and lasted through to mid 1960's. It was Texas' first amusement park and it stood near the site where the famed AstroWorld once stood. It is now a suburban and commercial development area. The park also featured Texas' first elevated monorail train (1956- Skyway Monorail)
Astroworld replaced Playland Park as Houston's and Texas' largest amusement park attraction from the 1960's up until the 1990's when new 'theme' parks where built in Dallas and San Antonio.

Yes, I remember Playland Park well. My Uncle Carter had two race cars that ran at Playland Park, number 89 and 98. It was a great place to go.

I remember Playland Park, but the one thing that sticks out in my mind is the Shakey's Pizza which was out on the blvd before you get to the park.   Also the Houston Buffs (minor leage ball team) had their stadium out near Playland.  I remember the games being held up every now and then because of a frieght train that use to run from right center to left center field.

Playland Park was a blast for young teenagers.  I remember the rides and all the laughs.

(Dang.  I didn't know that Astroworld had been demolished.  I need to get back to Big H more often.)

The main thing that I remember about Playland Park was the roller coaster.

Hey John, man it really has been some time.  You may be correct on where the stadium was.  And of course as I get older, I can't remember yesterday let along 50 years ago.  I know that we all lived on the north side and all the happening stuff was the south side.  You know Playland Park, Teen Hall, Houston Buffs, Then the Colt 45's.  I also went to allot of the Pro wrestling things in the old coliseum.  All southside, but I would not have traded the anything we had up on the north side for anything down on the south side.

You guys take care.  Can't say when I will be back in Houston.  Since Bobby died I haven't been back.  Of course Donald still lives there, plus some of the kinfolks, but me I am looking at Alaska.

Hi Lana - How are you doing.  Like you I need to get to Houston again.  It's been too long and there are a lot of people I would love to see.

Linda...the Roller Coaster was my favorite ride...I remember going in with my money in my hand...buying my tickets,  (with all my money except enough for a hot dog and a coke)...then I would head to the roller coaster....turn in a ticket...and never got off the coaster until all my tickets were used up...the coaster was all I ever rode most times.

..sometimes I would ride the Ferris Wheel ...because it was more like up and down than a round and round (horizontal) ride...those made me sick...and didn't they have bumper cars there?  I am thinking they did, and I liked them too.   I still drive like that.  hahaaa....but now I am in my big ole 4 wheel drive truck.

I don't think you and I ever went there together did we?  it was mostly football games for us wasn't it?

I remember Playland Park also.  My husband and I dated there.  Brings back lots of good times.  We didn't have Astro World so that was the fun place to go to ride rides.  Roller Coaster was great.   Just a good place to spend time with your date.....

Like Linda Trcalek...I spent all my time on the Roller Coaster.  Came in the gate.  went and spent all my money on tickets and used every one on the roller coaster.

Things that went around and around made me very dizzy and very sick.

I think now i would be terrified to get on one.   they are much bigger and much faster.
