Pelma Blair (Dixon)

Mrs. Pelma Blair Dixon, age 95, of Jenkins, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday March 12, 2013, at her home. She was born at Premium, Kentucky, on May 16, 1917, and was a lifelong resident of Letcher County, Kentucky. She was a mother and a homemaker, and was a retired school teacher, having taught twenty-six years at Burdine Elementary School. Mrs. Dixon was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Kentucky Education Association-Retired, and was also a member of the Little Ruby Old Regular Baptist Church. She also taught four years of extension classes from EKU to area teachers that were working on their certifications. Her years of involvement, both as an active and retired teacher, in educational organizations, including the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence in Kentucky, reflected her desire that all students get the best educational opportunities possible.

Her volunteer work included Letcher County Public Library Board, Home Health Advisory Committee and volunteer at the Jenkins Hospital, Letcher County Cancer Council, and Senior Citizen Council for Letcher County. She served as treasurer for the local Senior Citizen organization that was so very dear to her. As a member of the Old Jenkins High School Renovation Committee, she was extremely proud of the committee’s hard work to save the old building. Among her awards and achievements, being named recipient of the Life Time Achievement Award for the Jenkins Days Festival was probably the one most cherished.

Perhaps though, she will be most remembered for the love she gave, not only to family, but to all honored to know her.

Pelma was a daughter of the late Hiram Blair & Melvina Whitaker Blair, and was the widow of Dennis Dixon. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Dixon; three sisters, Christine Fields, Ethel Jones, and Loretta Caudill; three brothers, Edward Bryant, Earl Bryant, and Mitchell Bryant; a daughter-in-law, Lanna Dixon; and son-in-law, Ronald Crosbie.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy D. Crosbie, Huntington, West Virginia, and Pat Bowman, Winchester, Kentucky; two sons, Larry Dixon, Winchester, Kentucky, and D. Charles Dixon, of Jenkins, Kentucky; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorla Whitaker, Roxana, Kentucky, and Glenora Eldridge, of Indiana; five brothers, Phillip Bryant, Robert Bryant, Donnie Ray Bryant, Jack Bryant, and Jerry Bryant, all of Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Thursday March 14, 2013, at Polly & Craft Funeral Home, Jenkins, KY. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Friday March 15, 2013, at the Jenkins United Methodist Church, with Elder Elwood Cornett, officiating.
