Martha Edwards (Harris)

Martha Anne Harris, age 76, of Jenkins, Kentucky, passed away on June 4, 2015 at her home.  She was born on October 20, 1938 in Salem, Virginia; she grew up in Virginia and in her adult life had made her home in eastern Kentucky.  Martha had a strong passion for learning, as evidenced by having obtained a bachelor’s degree in religion from Emory and Henry College, a master’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and a Rank 1 in Learning Disability Education from Morehead State University.  She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught for sixteen years in Pike County Schools and for ten years at Jenkins Independent Schools.  Martha greatly enjoyed cooking, quilting, growing herbs, spending time enjoying her cat, Lucky, and playing the piano.  She was a pious person, having been a member of the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school.

   She was a daughter of the late Elmer Edwards and Eura Thomas Edwards.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Harris; a grandson, Ryan Hawkins; a sister, Lois Adams; and a brother, Posey Edwards.

   She is survived by a daughter, Isannah Lee, of Lexington, Kentucky; a son, Anthony Hawkins, of Ash Camp, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends to mourn her passing.

   Visitation will be held on Friday June 12, 2015 from 5:00-6:30 PM at Carty Funeral Home Polly & Craft Chapel, Jenkins, Kentucky.  A memorial service will follow at 6:30 PM, with Tommy England officiating.
