Lawrence Stevie (Sam P.) Mullins, passed away from this life on September 23, 2024, at his home in Richmond, Kentucky. Sam P. was born on August 21, 1943, in Burdine, Kentucky and was preceded in death five months ago by his wife, Peggy.
Sam P. retired from Meade and Shepherd Coal Co, Inc. in Whitesburg, KY. He was a 3 tour Vietnam veteran with commendations in being a Marksman (45 pistol), Expert rifle (M-14 106 mm) and a 1st Class Gunner (81mm) with two Purple Hearts. Sam P. was a member of the 27th Infantry in the U.S. Army.
Sam P. had a love unmatched for basketball. He played 4 years at Jenkins High School, then coached girls middle school and finally took a season coaching high school boys, all at Jenkins Independent. After coaching Sam did some refereeing to stay close to basketball.
He was a member of Jenkins First United Methodist Church and devoted much time to the youth there. He currently attended First United Methodist Church in Richmond, Kentucky.
Sam P. is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Roger) Mullins Bailey, three grandchildren, Alec, Evan, and Sydnie Arthur all of Irvine, KY; two sisters-in-law, Iris (Gary) Layne of Sebring, FL, and Donna Mac (John) Hale of Pound, VA, two nephews, Jonathan Hale and Jason Hale both of Pound, VA. He also leaves behind his longtime friends, Homer “Buster” and Liz Brown of Jenkins, KY.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date conducted by Pastor Scott Rogers in Irvine, Kentucky. Condolences may be left for the family at www.lakesfuneralhome.com
