Lonnie Carol Bentley (Big Lonnie), 78, of Barnesville, Georgia, passed away late in the evening on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at his residence in Barnesville surrounded by his loved ones after complications from multiple infections.
Lonnie was born July 8, 1947, in Fleming, Kentucky. Shortly after birth, Lonnie was adopted by the late Adam and Rosie Holcomb Bentley. Lonnie has worked a variety of jobs throughout his years from driving the local school bus; a variety of positions within the coal industry; and even multiple jobs for the city of Jenkins and Letcher County as a whole. It is through these work experiences that Lonnie became an active member of the Jenkins Kiwanis. In the early 1980’s, Lonnie began dating a local girl that he had fallen in love with while in high school at Jenkins, Dorothy Jean (Miller). Their love story blossomed from there and on May 27, 1982, the two became husband and wife. Soon after they married, the two became members of the Jenkins United Methodist Church. Each of them came with their own children from a previous marriage, Jennifer (Dorothy), Adam, and Lisa (Lonnie). As the years progressed, you would never have known that they were a blended family. Throughout the years, Lonnie and Jean welcomed more and more “children” into their lives, which still continues.
Lonnie is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Jean and multiple children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. Each person holds a special place in Lonnie’s heart and soul. Everyone that knew him, knows that his “family” meant the world to him. To Lonnie, family was not about “blood”, but about who you were as a person and how you treated others.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00AM at the Hall & Jones Funeral Home with Debra Bruner-Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at Powell Valley, VA. Visitation will be on Thursday at the Funeral Home between the hours of 4:00-7:00PM.
