Cynthia Locke (Lackner) (1975)

I would love a class ring, if it is the traditional Loretto ring.  In 1975, there were choices beside the tradional ring.

Elaine Meyer (Kellerman)

Martha Fly was excited about Math! She truly was a math cheerleader in class. I struggled with her discovery approach to understanding Algebra, but you had to admire the novel approach she had with a dry subject.

Thank you for letting us know of her passing. She was one of a kind and will be missed.

Elaine (Meyer) Kellerman, Class of '76

Kris Schaeffer (Teacher Too) (1964)

Martha Fly kept the Loretto spirit alive. When Loretto Academy closed, she created the new school that provided the same strong values and that innovative teaching approach. She gave soooo much. Bless you, Martha.

Jeff Goldman (1979)

It is sad to read that Ms. Fly has passed. She embodied the Loretto spirit that I cary to this day.I have have told stories of her classes many times over the years. The world seems just a little dimmer knowing that she has left us.

Thank you for sharing.

03/16/21 05:53 PM #195

Mary Petri (West) (1971)

I'm sad to hear of the passing of Martha Fly. I graduated from Loretto in 1971, and did not meet Martha until 1985. By then Loretto had shut its doors, but a core group of its teachers, determined not to let its legacy die, had formed the Kansas City Academy of Learning.

I was an "older" student at UMKC, working on a Master's in Public Administration, and writing a paper for the class "Community Organizations and Public Policy." We were to write a community organization case study, and I chose the Kansas City Academy of Learning. Martha, as its Principal/Coordinator, graciously agreed to a tour of the school and an interview. KCAL had become the new standard-bearer for the Loretto philosophy that "the process of learning, the learning how to learn, is as vitally important as the content of learning."

Martha was passionate about her work and about the need for this type of education. She said: "I see us as serving the broader community.... We want to see ourselves where the community is a resource to us and we can perhaps be a resource to the community..."

Thirty-five years later, the dream and vision live on in the Kansas City Academy. Good job, Martha. Rest in peace.

Dave Hutton (1980)

Hello everyone.

Dave and Cissy (Wagner) Hutton here.

Every year we have a 4th of July get together at the farm in Peculiar Mo. After the year of COVID, this year is going to be special. Everyone should be vaccinated by then and we all need to reconnect with loved ones. It has been suggested by Chris Avery that we should attempt to get some of the highschool gang involved. The year before the COVID hit we had Laura Smith Karl Metzger Chris Avery (Chris is alway there) It was a blast to relive some of those memories. I would like to invite everyone to come on out this year. Please if you are interested touch base.

23510 Hunter Rd was the searchable address but there was never any mail so the post office removed the address. But search the intersection of 235th and Hunter Rd, We are right first place south of 235th. You can contacts us here or email us at davehutton@sbcglobal.net cwhutton@sbcglobal.net or call 816 277 7829 for Dave 816 256 1394 for Cissy. We generally provide the food (why we need a head count)  but side dishes are welcomed. We have limited beer and soda. Bring your favorite but be willing to share. Bring chairs, games, kids and fireworks if you wish. We have horses, cattle, dogs (more are welcome, dogs not cattle) and 45 acres to roam. Fishing (bring a pole) Hay rides

We generally get started around 5-6 in the evening and end when the last firework is launched.

Dave and Cissy
