In Memory

Kyle Matthews

Kyle Matthews attended Loretto in the 1970s as an elementary student, and those who were in West and East Pods during the mid-1970s will remember him. He was a student in East Pod when he died. I believe it was 1977--the summer between 4th and 5th grades. As I recall, Kyle was on a car trip with his mother when he died from an undetected blood clot that was a complication from a recent surgery. As many Loretto classmates will remember, Kyle had surgery to remove a rusty nail from his knee. Kyle had received that injury on a warm spring day at Loretto, while sliding into a base on the playground's ball field. He made it through the surgery fine, and I believe he even came back on crutches to see everyone before school let out for summer. Little did we know at the time, he would not be returning in the fall. He had a great spirit, a love of life, and a keen sense of humor, and we all lost a great friend when he passed away.

I was not a student at Loretto until High School and didn't know Kyle, but was struck by the sadness of his story. I'm so very sorry for his family, and for him. I'm sure he was a beautiful child.

My sincere regards,

Monica Rutherford
