I was so saddened to hear of John's passing when Marla sent me an E-mail today. Goodness. Such a shock. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family. I know he will be missed terribly.

John and I were pretty good buddies our freshman year. Sad to say I have not seen him since we graduated.

I wish him a peaceful journey.

I drove across the new 35W bridge this afternoon and survived. I was even talking to Kristy on my cell and still survived. I must say it is a nice bridge. It didn't wobble once!

McCain or Obama or Nader?

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

Dan are you looking for trouble?

Okay, I will jump into the fray - I am a staunch republican, so what does that tell you? :)

09/25/08 12:27 AM #318

Danny Beck

Is not staunch and Republican repetitive? I throw my support to now one party. I do support the Independent party here in Minnesota.

McCain for sure absolutley no doubt.

"God is not a conservative Republican but he's DEFINITELY not a liberal Democrat"

"Annoy a Liberal, love your country
Annoy a Liberal, Remind them they can only vote once
Annoy a Liberal, support the troops
Annoy a Liberal, support the constitution
Annoy a Liberal, Believe in God"

Oopsie, did I start this?

Curt, I believe your were the biggest Kennedy fan in the world during our younger days and I was a Nixon fan. What happened to us?

Carla Hunerdosse (Ball)

Yeah Curt! My dad would have loved that.
Go McCain/Palin!!!!!

09/25/08 09:38 PM #322

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

Loved what you put also, Curt. I may have to put that on my blog. :)

Enlighten me, Dan (as Wayne sure can't!) - how can a person be independent and go back and forth and vote for the different parties when the differences between a republican and democrat are so great?? I don't understand that one. I tell Wayne he must have no convictions about anything. lol

I have to confess that I have voted 3 times for a democrat - Carter (my first election!), Clinton his first run, and Gore!! Can you believe that? Ha.

However the last election was when I got educated on what the parties stand for and the main reason I am a republican is that I do not believe in big government and enabling the masses with handouts - I believe in giving rights to the states and individuals and giving people a "hand up" instead of a handout. Of course, I also believe in a strong military.

Now I vote straight republican every time (makes it easy when I go to the voting booth - ha). Wouldn't Grandma Butler be SO proud of me, Dan? I remember once Mom went to a democratic caucus (she loved politics) for fun and Grandma didn't speak to her for days! Hee.

So far on this site at least, it looks like McCain has the edge! Would love to hear from others!

My goodness, I have struck a nerve. A Republican nerve it seems.

I stand by my declaration of being an independent. That word means quite a lot more than just a name of a political party.

I do not know how anyone can be supportive of the two major parties. I watched the candidates from each party viciously tear each other apart during the precinct and caucus season. Then magically the loser throws their support behind the winner simply because they are in the same party. There is a real phony smell to this process and it is very lemming-like.

I attended the Independent Party of Minnesota’s party the night of the precincts. All seven candidates running for state senator were at the same party. There was absolutely no negative campaigning against each other. The winner was praised genuinely by the ones that lost. It was SO refreshing to be amongst people that wanted the same changes in government and were all working on ways to defeat incumbent Norm Coleman and Al Franken. This is the same party that successfully ran the campaign for Jesse Ventura’s run to the Governor’s office. I will be working hard to get as many votes for Dean Barkley. I believe in this man. I do not believe in a party.

I will be voting for Ralph Nader. I do not see anything changing with the candidates in the two majors. Yeah, I hear it all the time that I am wasting my vote. No, not if you vote with your heart.

WOW!!!! I need to change subjects quickly.

Nader has one vote from S.E.W. so far!!!!

Curt, I am not touching your anti-liberal rant, as that will ignite another rush of boring political rants.

How is the Warhawk football team this year?

09/26/08 07:16 AM #325

Curt Bregar

Dan,

I still like Kennedy as a war hero, great speaker and he sure got laid a lot. Some social liberal ideas were needed in the 50's and 60's but they have gone from reasonable to just plain goofy. The liberal economic ideas have never and will never work and they helped lead to the "gimme" groups and therefore the incredible debt in the US. This is feeding the current meltdown that neither democrats nor republicans did anything about. Too bad Perot couldn't get elected in 1992.

I like liberals - they are fun to annoy and just need a little help and education.

Just my humble opinion

Curt, you still ROCK!!!! Thanks for the chuckle.

09/26/08 08:43 AM #327

Carla Hunerdosse (Ball)

Dan,
I respecit you on your "out of the box" thinking.
I can't say that I am all republican. I have watched some that have let us down. I have never voted a straight ticket in my life and have voted for a few independents in my time.
I know that right now our country is in trouble and we need to stand united for the same cause. We have extended our hand to help other countries only to have had it bitten off by our own people.
Our economy is in real trouble, all parites are responisble for this. So who cares about a stupid debate!
I wish I could vote in your state Dan, I am really not a big fan of Al Franken (talk about an extreme Liberial)
I would like to see him lose! Maybe that would shut him up for a day or two.
By the way Curt, I want to thank you for your service to our country. Some day I would like to hear all about your adventures. We all knew that you were going to go places.
Okay I'm rambling, and I have been interuppted too many times. I think my employees want me to work, so I'd better go.
Carla

Love the debates, keep it going.

Yes, Al Franken is embarrassing. He is a nut case. I do not know why the DFL in this state support him. Norm Coleman was the mayor of Saint Paul as a Democrat then switched parties to run for Governor as a Republican only to be defeated by JESSE "THE BODY" VENTURA. That was a great night at Jesse's campaign headquarters. WHEW!!!! We had a party. I don't even think Jesse thought he would win.

Coleman and Franken's ads on TV are some of the most negative ads I have ever seen. Nothing but ripping on each other. Not one ad has made mention of anything they will do should they win.

I always knew Curt would go somewhere, too. Especially after the education he received at that fine learning institution in Kansas City. (inside joke bit)

NADER IS GREATER IN 2008er. hee hee

How is the Mormon Trail football team doing? Is there still a Mormon Trail?

09/29/08 07:30 PM #330

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Who is Mormon Trail??

Dan, it is so nice to see that you are a liberal. I wouldn't have guessed it any other way. Me? I agree with everything Christi said! Except, if Palin doesn't do better in her debate on Thursday, I am really going to get nervous. I was kind of hoping in the back of my mind, that she would drop and Mitt would be McCain's running mate.

Yes, Carla we are in big trouble. The way things are going I don't think I will have anything in my retirement fund. Then what do we do??? That is so scary! Curt can we come and live with you??

10/01/08 12:07 PM #331

Barbara Coffman (Weeks)

Politics --- not one of my favorite subjects, with the mess we are in now, I agree, where do we go next??? But I have to say that I would follow most closely to Dan's frame of mind, Independent.

Also, Dan as far as the football team, we are (as of Friday night's homecoming game, which didn't go well) 2 and 3 overall for the season. It is a young team, sophomore QB and I believe only 5 seniors. It is what I think the call a building year...ha ha ha

As for Morman Trail, yes they still have a team, but they are in the 8-player class and are 1 and 5 overall this year. Alot of the teams we used to play went to 8-player, beside MT, Melcher-Dallas, Moravia, Lamoni, & Seymour. Martensdale-St Mary's even took a stab at it for a couple years, but are back in Class A this year, not working out well for them though.

Here is our conference standings:
School Win Loss
Madrid 5 0
Earlham 5 0
Colo-Nesco 3 2
SEW 2 3
Lynnville-Sully 2 3
Van Meter 1 4
Martensdale-StM 0 5

Thanks for the football update, Barb. That is some very interesting news on the teams we used to hate. 8-man football. WHAT is that? Next thing they will be playing scooter football in the gymnasium. I actually enjoyed scooter football. Weird concept but it was fun.

Does the SEW team still draw a pretty good crowd for the games?

10/01/08 12:23 PM #333

Barbara Coffman (Weeks)

Yeah, I think a lot of people at SEW agree with you on the 8-man thing. Albert Butler announces the games and has commented that the day SEW goes to 8-man would be the day they lay football to rest...But I think we have enough interest from the underclassmen that we don't have to worry about that in the near future. I think they said there were maybe 35 or so Jr High football players this year...more than the HS team.

And we still get a fairly good crowd on a weekly basis, of course homecoming always draws more people. A lot of tailgaiting for homecoming, and some for the other home games too. We only have 4 home games this year...only two left now. All the sports seem to draw good crowds, we have even had a few track meets and people have come to those...things have changed some!! The have added Golf and Bowling as sports now too.
