Congratulations Lori!

Dan - latest polls show Nader getting 2.3% with two of every three votes coming fom likely Obama supporters. You have a guess at what his numbers will show this year? I'm guessing higher than predicted.

11/03/08 07:29 AM #385

Danny Beck

I am hoping for over 5% for Nader. Had he been able to be included with the debates it would be higher. It is time to fasten the seat belts and get ready for the ride tomorrow. It is going to be very interesting. I will probably got to the Independent Party headquarters to watch the results. The senate race in Minnesota is pretty heated as well.

Make sure you vote tomorrow!

Christie already voted in Colorado which I am still not sure why that is. Are the polls at the peak of the mountains and they let you vote once you get there? So, McCain is up 2-0-0 so far.

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Ok my friends, here we go. As Danny said tomorrow is going to be very interesting. A day of history! And we get to be a part of it. Danny, I have put all my thoughts into perspective, and I have got to go with my heart on this one. Sure Nader has some good ideas, but could he really lead this country right now? Is he the experienced man?? Or is McCain? The Maverick? As Sarah would say, (and I quote)" You betcha!"

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Oh Danny, I added a new video to my profile. I hope you and everyone else (I know Christi and Curt will LOVE it)enjoys it.

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

I like the video Lori. If Obama wins this election, I truly do not understand it. I didn't know our country had gone that liberal that fast.

I guess if Obama wins Virginia and Florida, then it is all over for McCain - and we should know that early in the evening.

I am not optimistic at this point that McCain will pull it off - but maybe I have been brainwashed by the liberal media also, I don't know.

Remember to vote! Republicans vote on tuesday, Democrats on wendsday and it probably doesn't really matter when the independents vote.

Unfortunately I think your right Christi. But selfishly for me it makes those of us embedded in nuclear power better off since Obama has a strong green leaning and wants to shut down coal plants.

Ruth Bertrand (Hall)

Living in TX we are a Republican state, so our electoral votes will probably go to McCain. Regardless, I believe Obama will be voted in as President. It's unfortunate that his Grandmother passed away last night. Let's hope whomever gets elected can improve the economy and create more jobs. On a positive note, I paid $2.02 for gas.
Ruth

Good one, Curt. I think it will be a little closer than the polls predict. We Independent thinking minds will produce the largest turn out for our choice in some years. The lines at my polling station were pretty long at 7:00AM this morning. That was good to see.

I'll be whooping it up at the INDEPENDENT PARTY bash tonight. Hopefully we will celebrate our Senatorial candidate's victory.

GO VOTE!

11/04/08 06:16 PM #392

Lori Godlove (Goering)

CNN projects McCain wins Kentucky, Obama wins Vermont; Democrat Mark Warner takes U.S. Senate seat in Virginia.

Just keeping everyone updated.

So Danny, your independent group will be celebrating McCain's win? That is so patriotic of you!

11/04/08 06:32 PM #393

Danny Beck

We will celebrating an increase in more people being so damn mad at the two parties and their horrible management of this country that they want a new party that feels the same way. $2 Billion were spent on campaigns this year. TWO FREAKING BILLION DOLLARS on campaigns. Right there in front of you my friends is two billion reason why this system is a mess.

BUT it is time to party. Maybe I will call you from the party, Lori.

We need DARTH NADER for President!!!!

I am not a STARS WARS nerd. I hated the last three first three episodes. Jar Jar Binks must die.

11/04/08 07:08 PM #394

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Just checked the polls, not good. Yea, 2 billion dollars is ridiculous. Think of the idiots that make huge donations.

Terri Walker (Ohnemus)

I think your right Obama will be elected but Biden will be come President because someone will assasinate Obama shortly after the election just because hes black there are still to many raciest people in the world for us to have a black Pres.

11/04/08 09:55 PM #396

Terri Walker (Ohnemus)

off the subject but Christi Emma is so pretty and looks so happy she is a very lucky girl to have such a loving family did she get to go trick or treating or was she still to young I am gonna post pics of my granddaughters in thier halloween costumes

11/04/08 10:11 PM #397

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

President Obama. Wow! How wild is that? You know this is a great country in that anyone can become president - not just a black man, but a man who has NO experience at governing. Hee. Kidding you dems out there!

The people have spoken. At least it will still be fun to watch Hannity and Colmes as there will be plenty to talk about in the next 4 years you can bet!! McCain would have been sooooo boring. :) I'm just trying to make myself feel better, which is hard to do right now.

I will be looking forward to that new car with the promises of tax breaks, etc. that Obama has made to all of us. NOT!!!!

Terri - Emma was a bee. A beautiful bee. :) I will post the photo on my profile of her in her costume. I practiced democratic socialism on Halloween with Emma - getting ready for the probable election of Obama - Emma did all the work of trick-or-treating, and I took all her chocolate!! She got a few licks of a Tootsie Pop.

11/04/08 10:12 PM #398

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

And Cousin Dan, you will just do ANYTHING to party - even vote as an independent. :)

11/04/08 10:50 PM #399

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

One more thing - I most certainly hope that Obama will not be assassinated. I am praying he will be okay - as the security will be so good - as someone said to me, "If Bush could be so hated by many and not assassinated then I don't think Obama needs to worry." Sad but true.

11/04/08 10:53 PM #400

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Well I have been watching CNN and I have just considered myself as a minority. Not only am I a woman, but of German Dutch Swedish Jewish background. Not an American, mind you, but an immigrant due to my family and where they came from.

Terri, I believe you on both. Especially, that Emma is a doll! Soon I will add our newest grandson Benjamin Scott. He is adorable also. Just precious.

Danny, party on. The rest of the world (the normal world, that is) needs to sleep so we can prepare for 2009. Just kidding,

11/05/08 12:46 AM #401

Danny Beck

The party was not as festive as I had hoped. The Independent candidates all made good showings but no victories. I am disappointed but full of hope for this party. Their are some really good people and great minds in the party. We will be even better prepared the next election.

It is nice to have this campaign season over.

11/05/08 07:17 AM #402

Curt Bregar

Well all we can do now is get behind our newly elected candidates and hope they do the right things.

You heard it here first --- just like in 1992/1993 a few months from now liberal economists will be saying "you know the economy wasn't as bad as we thought ... sorry about that if it made you change your vote".

Ruth - $2 gas will be gone by next summer as the economy takes off and the dollar weakens. The proposed windfall profit taxes on big oil will significantly reduce new exploration and investment and by 2012 when supply again outstrips demand prices for gasoline and electricity will sky rocket. Just my humble opinion.

Curt

11/05/08 11:49 AM #403

Ruth Bertrand (Hall)

You're probably right Curt, but we can enjoy the low gas prices while they last. I would hope that more wind powered energy will be developed over the years as T. Pickens Booth is pushing it. (Ironic since he's an oil tycoon.) Exxon Mobil making 15 million in one quarter is an example of who's profiting from our demand at the pumps. How is that going to be fixed, release more reserves to keep prices down? The power of supply and demand is basic economics, but gas remains over priced. I hate to think of those up North who will soon have winter heating bills to deal with. Buy electric blankets and put another log on the fire, it's gonna get expensive to stay warm.

11/05/08 11:53 AM #404

Christina Haltom (Farrar)

Obama thanked his campaign staff and others last night for helping him win the election. He forgot to thank the liberal and biased media and Hollywood. They are the ones who got him elected. And yes, Curt, I truly believe that all of a sudden we will find that the economy is not in as bad shape as we thought!! Go figure!

11/05/08 06:54 PM #405

Lori Godlove (Goering)

Gas went up 12 cents a gallon overnight, the Dow went down again today (who wanted a nest egg when they retired anyway?), oh, and I have been trying to help my son find a job, and it is slim to none for choosing. Can't wait for next year to roll in. I think it is going to be rough and rocky. Thank goodness I live on a farm, so I can at least raise my own food.

11/06/08 07:03 AM #406

Curt Bregar

Lori just remember you didn't lose anything unless you sold into the panic. It is just a good time to buy! I think there will be $4 gas by June. Gas lagged oil down so I think it will settle out higher and lag it back up too.

My oldest got his MBA from Mississippi State in August and hasn't got a job yet. I think he will very soon. He's a smart kid with lots of potential so time will tell.

I am going to bore you all with a good letter to the editor on green power .... If anyone thinks T. Boone Pickens is trying to develop wind for altruistic purposes think again.

---------------------------------------------------

There are a couple points I'd like to address in your recent editorial "Backing Nuclear Power." You wrote that the projected $9 billion price tag of a new nuclear plant is "a lot more than a conventional fossil fired plant or a renewable energy facility." The former is true, but the latter is not. On scale, a renewable energy power plant will cost as much or more than a nuclear power plant. T. Boone Pickens's Mesa Pampa Wind Project in the panhandle of Texas is a perfect example.

The wind farm will consist of 2,700 commercial wind turbines spread over 200,000 acres or 312 square miles. It will provide enough electricity for one million average U.S. households. Because wind farms operate around 30 percent of the time, the wind farm will require backup power supplies (most likely natural gas) for when the wind isn't blowing. Testifying before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in June of this year, Mr. Pickens said the project will cost close to $10 billion and will take seven to eight years to complete.

In contrast, the smallest new advanced reactor will generate electricity for 1 million average U.S. households, while the largest will power 1.6 million homes. The plants will run continuously for 18 to 24 months and will need backup only during refueling outages that are scheduled for low-demand times (spring or fall). The new plants are expected to be productive at least 90 percent of the time. At a projected cost of $7-to-$9 billion per single unit and an estimated build time of four-to-six years, new nuclear plants will cost less and take less time to build than Mr. Pickens's wind project. And it's important to note that the projected lifetime carbon footprints to build and operate both are nearly equal; one new nuclear plant will occupy about one square mile, and most new nuclear plants will be built on existing plant sites with ready access to electrical infrastructure and transmission lines. In addition, due to their inherent strength, nuclear plants aren't as vulnerable to extreme weather or aircraft impact.

Regarding financing, renewable energy supplies are highly dependent on government incentives. The American Wind Energy Association made it very clear that no new wind farms would be built and thousands of jobs would be lost if the federal tax credits stopped. New solar projects (projected to be the most expensive energy projects) are equally reliant on incentives.

There is broad misconception that nuclear energy has received a large share of federal incentives. Actually, it's quite the opposite. A comprehensive study recently released by Management Information Services, Inc., determined that nuclear power received just 9 percent of federal energy incentives over the past five decades. Renewable energy sources and hydro received 18 percent while oil, gas and coal received the lion's share of 73 percent.

Just like other new power supplies, new nuclear plants will be capital intensive. And because new designs are involved, along with the fact that the industry is essentially starting over, loan guarantees will be necessary to acquire reasonable loan rates. Reasonable loan rates will not only facilitate construction of the plants, they will also benefit consumers.

Every new commercial power supply will be expensive. There are no exceptions. And unless the companies building new supplies have extremely rich backers like Mr. Pickens who are willing to take great risks with their money, they all will need some form of federal backing.

Ruth Bertrand (Hall)

The Department of Energy released a report optimistically predicting America’s ability to satisfy 20 percent of its electricity needs with wind power by 2030.

T. Boone Pickens placed an order for 667 wind turbines from GE for a total cost of $2 billion. The turbines will have a generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts, enough to power 300,000 homes. The order was made for his Pampa Wind Project in the Texas Panhandle, which he aims to turn into the world’s largest wind farm, generating some 4,000 megawatts of power as early as 2014.

Wind farms do not pose a threat to the environment or the communities they exist in. Take a survey, would your neighbors or the neighbors' cows mind if a wind turbine was placed in their field and they got compensated for it? They are big and ugly, but a much safer/cleaner alternative. I prefer the GREEN way to the nuclear way if we ever get there.
