Matt began a two-year Fellowship at Harvard in Facial Plastics/Reconstructive Surgery, with a focus on reanimation of the paralyzed face, in July 2019. In July 2021, he joined the UNC medical faculty in Chapel Hill, NC, where he is an assistant professor in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the inaugural director of the UNC Facial Nerve Center. Michael was married in August 2011, to the former Linda Liu, who received her PhD in biomedical informatics from Stanford in 2012; and Matt was married in April 2014, to the former Emily Privette, who completed her residency in Dermatology in May 2018 at UVA. Michael and Linda had their first child, Isaiah, in June 2018, and their second, Mary Bethany, in July 2020. Matt and Emily had their first child, Anderson, in May 2018, and their second, Clifford, in November 2020. So we now are blessed with four wonderful grandchildren.

Following law school at UVA and a 14-year career practicing law in Washington, DC, moved to New York to take on a turn-around for a privately-held securities firm and eventually started my own New York-based broker-dealer. Joined Vanguard, located outside Philadelphia, PA, the largest mutual fund company in the world, in 1996, where I was a managing director and a member of the senior staff, responsible for corporate functions such as marketing, communications, public relations, and government relations, as well as information security, business contingency planning, investment research and analysis, fraud detection/prevention, risk management, and oversight of external investment management firms responsible for managing the assets of many of Vanguard's actively-managed mutual funds. Earlier in my Vanguard career, I also had responsibility for corporate strategy/competitive analysis, corporate compliance, and international operations based in Europe and the Americas. Retired from Vanguard in July 2015. Since retirement, have joined the boards of the UVA Law School Foundation; the UVA Health Foundation (nursing and medical schools and hospital), which I now chair; the UVA Center for Politics; the American Trauma Society; NACCO Industries, a publicly-traded company with a portfolio of mining and natural resources businesses; Hamilton Beach Brands Holding Company, a publicly-traded company with subsidiary operations in small kitchen appliances (Hamilton Beach Brands); and Vanguard Charitable, a national donor-advised fund and one of the largest grantmaking organizations in the U.S. I have also continued to serve on the boards of Vanguard's Irish-domiciled funds and management company, as well as the Temple University Medical School advisory board. Married to Nancy Richards from Roanoke, Virginia (since 1975); two sons, Michael (age 36) and Matthew (age 34); and four grandchildren. Nancy is retired from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was an archivist. Michael graduated from Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, California, in June 2011 (graduated from UVA in 2008) and Matthew graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in May 2014 (graduated from UVA in 2010).
