This just in....Melissa Turner reported no hangover after drinking copiously from the Black Box Cab. Encouraged by this success, she plans on buying "something white."

We will continue to update you with this breaking story…

Mary,

You could not have said that any better.!!!!! I can not believe it was just a week ago.

Melissa,

Try a Chardonnay next, that's what I drink. Let me know!

I think it is great that everyone is still talking about seeing each other soon. Our next meeting is Nov 5th. I will let you know what our future plans are.

Pam,

I hope Maura is getting better every day.

Bill,

How are you? Hope all is well.

Hi to everyone else.

Anne

Hey Kevin, Melissa and all of you other wine lovers out there! I just tried a twist off bottle of "Dancing Bull" Savignon Blanc that was actually very good!! After hearing about the "Black Box Cabernet" maybe I will look for it and try it! Are you game Kevin?? Anyone else want to participate? Can we even get that in NH?

Mary, I agree I just want to party, party, party but my life just doesn't lend itself to that much partying anymore! When I can I do though for sure!!

Maura is doing better and I am hoping she does well on her swallow study Mon. and she can be discharged to home soon!! She is definitely more herself now though laughing and smiling and winning over everyone she meets with her big baby blues!!

It is so nice to be back in my house with my oldest and see my sister again! Even if it is just for the weekend there is truly no place like home!! I at least got my outside lawn furniture in and some laundry done. By the time I get back home it will be time to get the leaves all raked up and prepare for Old Man Winter again...UGH!!
Where did the Summer and Fall go??

Mary, I'm with you. It was so nice seeing so many people having a good time and just enjoying the moment. That night went by too fast, however I will always remember the great time everybody seemed to have.

Melissa..glad to learn that your experiment was a success! I am curious as to how you aerate a boxed wine? Do you just punch holes in the box? I don't have much of a palate, I can usually handle anything but 2 buck Chuck. Although, I haven't had boxed yet. I used to love Cabs but my new passion is Pinot Noir.
If anyone is into a little adventure...try some Retsina...It's a Greek White wine that has been aged in pine barrels and has absorbed some of the resin...best chilled and not for everyone...very dry and woody.
I read somewhere that they don't have enough raw materials anymore for natural corks so some really good wines will have synthetics or screw tops...Having said all that I'd leave the higher choices to Richard or Kevin...I buy stuff that's cheap from BevMo!

Glenn, Don't you love the nickel sale at BevMo? That's when we do most of our wine experiments.

I have a little aerator. It’s fabulous. You’re probably supposed to aerate as you decant. However, I’ve cut out the middle man and hold the “spout” under the box tap (or bottle) and guide it directly into my glass.

My “Foodie” friends insist I have to develop my pinot palate but so far the only pinot I have loved has not loved my wallet. Too rich for my palate and I hesitate to raise the bar. I don’t mind shelling out the $$ to bring to a dinner party but for home use, I’d just as soon keep it cheap.

I rely on my friend, Jo (The wedding was at her house in Rancho Santa Fe) to hook me up. (She has a vested interest in keeping good wine in my kitchen.) I’m going to decant the Black Box before I serve Jo. See what she thinks.

I think a Napa road trip might be in order for the class of 79. Who’s in?

Linda Lemay (Wojceshonek)

all this wine talk is making me thirsty. Although I'm not much of a wine drinker. I prefer mixed drinks. As for partying I'm all for it these days. My hubby and I have empty nest. My youngest just bought a condo and is slowwwwwwly moving out. I have a feeling we will be stuck getting rid of much of his stuff ourselves.

Yeah, so back to partying. I hope there is another get together soon.

Count me in, Melissa. My favorite is a chilled glass of Reisling outside on a warm summer night or inside by the fire in the winter.

Napa here we come...I spent my honeymoon there and wanted to live there...meanwhile haven't been back in 18 years! My father in-law used to make incredible homemade wine.

I want to go to Napa!

I just want to graduate and get a brain break for awhile, St. Augustine is beautiful right now, come on down. Enjoyed the cool weather comming in while I was up there and the leaves changing their colors. Cathy and I did some hiking. Back to school this week for the last run to the finish line. Thank you all again for the laughs

10/18/09 01:47 PM #1434

Laura Kohut (Douglass)

All this wine talk! How cool is that? My wine choices are usually bases on what we have the most of at the restaurant so I can take a bottle home! (spoiled, I know). Given a choice I will always take the Malbec. I do buy the Black Box as well and enjoy every glass.

All these ideas for future get togethers sound great. I'll keep looking for Kevin to announce something at his house (which is historical and beautiful) this spring, I hope, for sugaring in his sugar shack as well as other festivities. As I mentioned before, pencil in next Labor Day weekend (Sunday) for the Pig Roast in my back yard. Of course folks are always welcome before then. I'd be happy to have another dinner at Apollo or Venus, depending on folks tastes. Western MA has a lot to offer: Northampton, Smith College Art Museum, 6 Flags, hiking on Mt. Thom or Sugarloaf, Yankee Candle, Historic Deerfield, etc..

I miss all my friends already and have been scheming with the husband to escape to CA for a long weekend without the kids. Be warned, Glenn and Melissa!

Pam, please keep us up to date on Maura's progress. It has been a journey for all of us and we don't want to be left behind!

A trip to Napa Valley would definitely interest me. If anyone has seen the movie "Sideways" it is about these two guys going to wine country and after seeing that it definitely made me want to go!

I find for me, the kind of wine I have depends upon the meal I am eating with it. Certain foods call for a good white and others a good red! I find in the summer the whites are more appealing and come this time of year reds for sure. I was introduced to a awesome Zinfandel last year called "Seghesio Sonoma Valley Zinfandel". I can't remember the year but it was rated high in the "Wine Tasting" magazine and it was very smooth with nice long legs to it! It was $19.99 a bottle but for a special occassion or dinner well worth every penny.

Laura, a trip back to the "Apollo" sounds great to me seeing I missed it last weekend. Also I will be sure to keep you all informed as to Maura's progress. I am hoping her swallow study goes well tomorrow and we can be discharged sometime this week! Keep your fingers and toes crossed for us!!

Without a plan, this is all just fantasy. Sonoma/Napa really would be a great class trip. There are so many fabulous resorts in Napa. We like Meadowood.com. Great Spa, Tennis (including clay courts, Golf, Championship croquet court, and glorious hiking trails. It’s just about perfect. I’d be in for any resort but I’d prefer to avoid the B&B’s.

With a large group, it’s a good idea to hire a party bus (small group- limo) and drag around to all the vineyards (many of which offer cooking classes with wine pairings.) Shramsberg.com Vineyards (mostly sparkling wines) used to do a special pairing dinner (after the tour) but we haven’t been there in years. It was amazing though and I am still using some of the recipes supplied by the Davis family. The party busses are already hooked up with the best vineyards and will also handle shipping your wine (if the vineyard doesn’t already offer it.) It’s a pretty good gig.

It’s about 9 hours from San Diego to Napa (6 if Tim is driving.) It’s also 6 hours from LA but most people fly in to the Bay Area. If anyone wanted to make a real west coast trip of this, you could fly into San Diego.

San Diego=
World Class San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park
SeaWorld (It’s not just another park, it’s another world)
Legoland
World class Tennis & Golf Four Seasons La Costa and La Costa Resort and Spa are just blocks from our house.
Great Hiking trails
Unleash your inner Gidget and Moondoggie- Unlimited surfing via the Pacific Ocean (our squids claim they can get anyone up on a board)
Cave & Ocean Kayaking
Tide pools galore (for any budding oceanographers)
Sand Castle building contest
Padres/Charger game (Give you a chance to gloat about your superior teams)
Ocean-side Camping (Your squids will love this!)
Bonfire Beach Nite (a California Classic)
A night at the Coyote Grill (CoyoteCarlsbad.com) for amazing Mexican food, live outdoor entertainment, multi-group fire-rings. The sound of the nearby ocean. Dancing! Drinking! All age groups welcome (6-86.)

There is certainly more depending on what your budget and interest allow. I could hook up anyone with discount tickets for most local events. Also, the beaches are amazing.

The next leg would be Los Angeles. Glenn would best be able to sell LA, it’s has far more than its country cousin, San Diego.

Yes, this is the big sales pitch but I think it could be an amazing group event!

Melissa. That sounds wonderful. I'd be in for a class trip to Napa. It would be great for me. I could also squeeze in a visit with my daughter that lives in the Bay area. If people are serious I'm in.

I am just hoping to make it to Hooksett! Maybe Nashua!

10/18/09 05:14 PM #1439

Glenn Lianos

Donna...there's a great gallon of Mad Dog that they serve in Hooksett, not sure what Nahsua has to offer.

Melissa...Don't forget Temecula along the way up from San Diego. Berringer's and Mondavi would have to be some of my favorites up North.

Pam...Sideways is one of my favorite movies. "I am NOT drinking Merlot! (The director is a nice Greek Boy. Goes to our church. He used to be married to Sandra Oh from Grey's Anatomy) It was shot in Santa Barbara which is about 2 hours from LA. On the way is also Modesto and Livermore about 2 hours South of Napa. I hope you enjoyed your w/e off. Kiss Maura for me!

FYI..Sideways is one of my favorite movies..I actually own it! Watch it at least 2 or 3 times a year!

Melissa & Glenn ~ Don't forget...Jo Skeff lives in Napa (although I don't think she lives on a vineyard)! Maybe she lives near one? Miss you guys!
