Robert and Brenda: Thanks for a wonderful time this morning my family enjoyed it. Hope to be able to attend more get togethers in the future. My daughter (Andrea) made the comment that our kids should sit together so they can get to know each other. It was great to see everyone.

Laura, you were asking about Halloween costumes. Our Tedde went as Tippi Hendren from Hitchcock's "The Birds"(I will post the photos in my profile) She had a bird on her back, in her hair and attached to her purse. She said only about half of the people got it but she still loved her costume. Gives you some idea of the kinds of Halloween movies we watched with the squids.

Every now and again the squids inform us that their childhood has not been normal. How lucky are they?

Donna Knowles (Leduc)

that's ok Melissa....mine didn't have a normal childhood either...and I'm so grateful for that...think it's almost unheard of nowadays to actually take part in your child life....i remember their elementary school told me I was too involved..lol..cause I used todrive em back to the wchool to get the homework they forgot..imagine that...a parent making their kid do their homework..sheeshhh..I've also seen how some of their friends were raised...with parents that didn't really give a s*** about what they did or where they were...which was usually my house.lol...so not only did I raise my two...I had a hand in how a few others turned out also...so not having a normal childhood is (in my mind) a very good thing indeed....smile

Bob and Brenda, thank you so much for all the photos. I agree with Kathy that it’s nice to imagine being there (via the photos) if we can’t actually be there. I loved the kids’ table. When our squid’s complain about sitting at the children’s table, I remind them that someone has to die in order for them to be promoted.

For those of you who have asked, it looks like the wine country trip is shaping up to take place sometime summer 2010. This depends largely on Pam’s vacation time and my summer school schedule.

Speaking of wine, I have a Black Box update….While the wine in the box is proving to hold its own; I’m growing tired of drinking it. Glenn was right. (What else is new?) I should have held out for a party. I wish it came in a smaller box. Tim is not really a red wine drinker and I’m sick of the same old. The part of me that is committed to Yankee Thrift feels guilty opening something different when I have perfectly delicious wine opened and waiting to be consumed.

This is the "Interested" list for wine country. No commitment required. You know the drill; cut and paste, add your name and post. I hope many of you attend. I miss you all already.

Hi Everyone:

The text group continues to grow. :) At brunch on Sunday we talked about how it will be a great tool to get a last minute count for our get-togethers.

I'd like to make a request for anyone else who would like to be added to the list...please text me both your name AND cell phone number. This way, I can simply forward your text to the group and not have to type a new text. (If you only text me your name, I will have your cell number but forwarding it will only include your name, hence the need to type a new text.)

Thank you!

Carol

Sorry I missed out on a good time at brunch on Sun. Emily's soccer team lost the play-off but at least the weather was beautiful out! Thanks to my friend, Stephen I was able to go as he helped me get Maura packed up and secured into the van and then out on the soccer field to watch the game! The fresh air was great for Maura too!!

Speaking of Maura she is doing great!! Don't know how she stays so happy in that cast but she does God bless her!! I know my back is feeling it from lifting her but with any luck it will come off the Wed. before Thanksgiving!

For all of you with loved ones who have or who currently have anyone serving in the armed forces I wish them a very happy "Veterans Day"! I also thank them for serving their country so proudly and unselfishly so the rest of us can live free and on peaceful soil.

Anything fun going on this weekend? I am a free woman and looking for some fun and R&R!

More wine chatter... I have been wanting to try the Malbec (as recommended by Laura Kohut, Joe Senecal and Kevin Farley). It could not be found in any of our grocery stores and I had to go to a specialty wine store to get it. Of course, the wine store had many Malbec offerings and I now know Malbec comes primarily from Argentina (thank you wine guy). My wine guy also told me the one I chose had deep plumy tones and I’d recognize it as something between Bordeaux and a Cab. (Perfect for the standing rib roast I was serving.)

My findings...Malbec is one dark red wine. While it was perfect with this hearty dinner, I would be hard-pressed to sit around just sipping it. The tannins were “robust” and as inky as hell. In spite of this, I can see its draw. It was delicious with dinner, but too fancy for me. We are not likely to find a Malbec in Napa/Sonoma. But I'm sure we'll find something yummy.

HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY TO ALL OUR CLASS OF '79 RELATED VETS!
Just got off Skype with my son Doug and he just passed his latest test meaning he will be promoted to Coxswain! He's serving in Kuwait as you may remember with his Port Security Unit. And helping eat the really big cake they have for Veteran's Day.

Congrats to Doug, Mary!

Melissa sorry to hear about your final but it sounds like your teacher is giving you a "A" as you deserve despite it all! Smart woman if you ask me!!

I agree with you on the "Malbec" has never been one of my favorites!! I was with Kevin at the "Easter Seals" wine tasting when he discovered it and he loved it and I didn't at all!!! I find people that like dark beers also enjoy the deeper, darker, more robust wines too! I am not a big fan of "Merlot" either. Maybe once I travel wine country my opinion will change but I doubt it!!

When are you thinking of doing the "wine country" trip? Maura's birthday is June 21'st so I would want to be around for that, especially this year after all she has been through!! Mine is the 29'th of June and wouldn't mind being away on a vacation for that!! July is completely open and after August 6'th! Emily's birthday is Aug. 6'th so again I wouldn't want to be gone for that either. What works for everyone else??

Congratulations to your son, Mary!

Mary, pass on my congrats to your son, you must be so proud of him. we'll keep him in our prayers.

Thanks everyone, I love you guys!

Laura Kohut (Douglass)

Mary, congrads to Doug for his acheivement! You must be so proud.

Pam, your girls both sound like they are doing well--glad to hear that.

Melissa, love your daughter's costume. Many people did not "get" my Brett Michaels costume either but I LOVED it and had a blast. (posted on my profile). Thanks for including us (or drafting us) for the wine country. Keep me updated and I'll try to swing it. I may be finishing my Capstone project for my MS (like a thesis but you need to not only write about something, you need to DO something, too). This trip gives me more incentive to be done by the summer!

11/12/09 03:03 PM #1581

Melissa Turner

Laura, your costume is amazing!!!! I can't even tell it's you. The darkened skin is almost my favorite part. I know you have concerns that Audrey has gone over to the dark side (OMD Store bought costume!) but to give the devil his due, that's a pretty great costume. I loved Angus'. You can see those apples have fallen very close to the Kohut/Douglass tree.

Work really hard (and fast) on your project (on a person note let me add AHHHHHHHHHHH! on your behalf) I want to swill some wine with you and Casey. If we are really, really lucky, we might find a Karaoke bar after we hit a few wineries. Duet perhaps?

Pam Taber

Go Laura get that thesis done girl then we can celebrate many things on our trip!!! Love the costume, you always were very different and creative!! In a good way though!

Melissa, what is a good time for you to do this trip? I really want to do it and not just talk about it forever!!

Carol - I've been told that my committee meeting Friday night should be done by 8 (Ha! Yeah, we'll see... ), so when I'm done there, I'll text you to see if you're still there and probably swing by. I don't always get a Friday night out, so this will be a treat!

Ron and I took our 6yr old, Isaac, to see 'Star Wars in Concert' at the Verizon tonight. What an awesome show! The live orchestra was amazing! It's been a while since I've attended a live orchestral concert and forgot how emotional I get when I hear it. I've participated IN concerts, which is cool, too, but I'm too busy concentrating on my part in it. Hearing the music in its totality is always thrilling for me. This show was so great, we are seriously considering buying last minute tickets and following the show to their next performance in Boston on Saturday.

We've had tickets since September and kept it a surprise for Isaac, who can discuss in minute detail nearly every aspect of the whole Star Wars saga with anyone who will let him. He has a whole arsenal of light sabers in varying forms and colors and several costumes. I snuck his Jedi costume & robe and a light saber into the back of my car this afternoon, and we left the house this evening as though we were going to choir rehearsal like we normally do on Thursdays. But instead of continuing on Queen City Ave to the west side (Ste Marie Church), I turned right onto Elm, which wasn't lost on Isaac! Knowing we were about to pass the arena, he says, "Hey, is today the 12th? I think Star Wars is at the Verizon! Maybe someday we'll get to see it..." At that point, Ron and I couldn't contain ourselves anymore and gave it up:
Mum: "Hey, they won't miss us at choir. Let's go to the concert instead. Wanna?"
Isaac: "Really?!?!"
Dad: "We may as well... it'd be a shame to let these tickets we've had for two months go to waste..."
This exchange was followed by squeals of delight issuing from the back seat! Then, when he spotted families with kids in costume crossing the street to the arena, he lamented, "Oh, I wish I had my Jedi robes." Heh-heh-heh.. Patience, young Padawan..., thinks Mum. We parked the car and revealed the costume to one excited little Jedi!

Isaac often figures out or guesses surprises before we can pull them off. Ron and I can have a whispered discussion three rooms away, yet Isaac can hear us with his bionic hearing! We've never been able to spell or 'speak in code' in front of him, either, 'cause he's known how to spell since birth (I'm not kidding!) and always seems to know what we're refering to, so we are thrilled to have managed this surprise for him!

If you've stayed with me this far, thanks for reading my ramblings. I'll post photos, as soon as I overcome some networking issues (haven't moved my photo files over to my laptop yet), including Halloween. Both Ron and Isaac were Darth Maul this year! Yes, we are a family of Star Wars geeks and proud of it! :-D

Karen Dobrowski (Hernandez)

I, also, live in a Star Wars house, Evelyn, so I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! All three of my boys are conversant in the ways of the Force! My oldest has been addicted since age two when we first showed him the original... he quickly indoctrinated the other two! We have a variety of costumes in a variety of sizes... Duncan, the youngest, wanted to be Darth Maul this year, but we couldn't swing it... he already "has dibs" on it for next year!

11/13/09 09:38 AM #1587

Evelyn Gratton (Pepin)

Karen - I'm so glad someone else understands! LOL!! Ron has the super-deluxe-just-like-in-the-movie Darth Vader costume with full head gear and breathing sound effect! He is very impressive and intimidating in it and passed innumerable, awestruck trick-or-treaters last Halloween (2008). I think he regrets a tiny bit that he didn't wear it to the concert last night, but there wasn't enough time for him to suit up between getting home from work and leaving for the show. It takes quite a bit of time and at least one other person to get him into it!

We also have 3 Force Effects light sabers that light and sound like the movie ones - the kind that collectors display behind glass and don't let the children in their lives touch. One is Yoda's, which is in perfect scale for Isaac, that we got for him last Christmas. We got Darth Vader's and Anakin's on ebay from a guy who was getting married and was sadly parting with his 'youthful collections'. Poor guy... We didn't dare reveal to him that we were actually going to let a 5 yr old USE them! From time to time, Ron and Isaac have spectacular light saber duels in the front yard after sundown, inciting many responses from passing Huse Road traffic! :-D

It's no wonder why I have difficulty wrapping my head around this '30 yrs since high school' concept: We weren't kids long enough, and we're not done playing!!

Laura Kohut (Douglass)

Evelyn, thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like an experience that will become a family story! I remember going to the musuem of science in boston w/my son and his friend to see the star wars exibit. I would have been content with 1 hour there, but the boys insisted on 3! Ah, Star Wars.

Who is going to be at Margaritas tonight?

Ev, I've always liked you and now I know why. You're a goof. Pure and simple...a goof. (And how lucky is your little bug?)

I want to go on record as saying the original Star Wars Trilogy rocked. The prequels?...eh!
