Diane and I were good friends at Mt. Hebron. I remember the house she grew up in well. One time after an Eagle Scout trip to Smith Island(Cape Fear), NC. we loaded up on Fireworks and upon arriving back in Montclair we proceeded to set off a bunch of cherry bombs and M80’s in her front yard....totally freaked out her parents and luckily we skipped the neighborhood before the cops showed up.
I knew Diane only briefly, but remember her happy smile and upbeat personality. She could light up a room. So sad to lose another one of us. She will be missed.
Severe COPD finally won the battle, but she fought it courageously for many years. Diane died peacefully Tuesday May 28th, at AVOW Hospice, with her sister by her side.
Raised in Montclair NJ, Diane attended Centenary College. She then made her way to Florida in 1979 via a job transfer with International Paper. Diane, often known as "Pork Chop", loved meeting up daily at the Naples Pier, with her Pier Coffee Club buddies at sunrise, and was a regular at the Dock's Sundayy Bloody Maryy brunch.
Diane is survived by her sister, Patricia Girard, and cousin, William Combs.
Per Diane's request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to AVOW Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples FL 34105, or a charit y of your choice
Diane and I became friends in Mt Hebron and remained friends throughout our adult lives. We shared something in common that made neither of us happy. We didn’t move on with our friends to Montclair HS. And yet we stayed in touch all our lives - pretty amazing. I saw her and her sister, Pat, many times in Naples where they both settled together. One year Diane spent a wonderful day with us at the beautiful Naples Botanical Gardens where she worked. I was very fortunate to have a visit with Diane and Pat just last month. Diane and Pat had a forty year tradition of having brunch at “The Dock,” a local restaurant on the water. We joined them there many times, sometimes with other MHS classmates. We hope to join Pat in January at the Dock for another tradition the sisters shared. I’ll raise a glass to you, Diane, and I know you’ll be chuckling!
Here is a photo of Diane from 9th grade composite class photo from Mt. Hebron Jr. High School. I did not know Diane very well, but certainly remember her. May she rest in peace after her struggle with COPD.
I have very fond memories of the years when Diane and I were friends at Mt. Hebron. She was always cheerful and friendly, a joy to know. I’m sorry to hear of her death.
There are so very few gentle souls and Diane was surely one of them. I am grateful I have the memory of her "giggle" and her smile. Although she went off to private schools during our high school years there was no doubt she was one of us and even though she is RIP she is still one of us and proud we were to know her.
Though I thought Diane carried a certain inner sadness, I knew the cheerfulness and laughter with which she met the world. We exchanged Christmas cards for years and she often mentioned gardening. I was glad about that. I had a tall aunt who once met Diane at the front door of where I lived, in town, and she, my Aunt Helen, during that Christmas season, could not stop talking about how radiant Diane looked wrapped in her scarf and hat. A lot of us see that face. Kent Mitchell
