Joe Curfman - Class Of 1968

Joe Curfman

With profound sadness, we share the passing of former Bureau Chief Joe Curfman, an esteemed leader of our Bureau of Investigation for nearly 20 years who believed that people are always our greatest asset. Chief Curfman’s Riverside County law enforcement career began on October 12, 1971, with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, where he was promoted to Detective in 1975. He later joined the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on June 14, 1981, and served as the quintessential Chief Investigator from May 1, 1983, until his retirement on December 30, 2004. Under Chief Curfman’s leadership, our Bureau expanded in size, scope, and focus, adapting to Riverside County’s burgeoning population and positioning us as a cornerstone of the law enforcement community as we entered the 21st century. Multi-agency task forces, specialized Bureau units, and expert-level trial support, among countless other initiatives, emerged as a direct result of his unwavering commitment to his staff, our office, and the citizens he so proudly served. With over 33 years of service to Riverside County and our local community, Chief Curfman leaves a lasting legacy. His tenure as Bureau Chief was the longest in our history, and he was largely responsible for creating the modern Bureau of Investigation as we know it today. Chief Curfman’s contributions to the Bureau of Investigation and impact on those he worked with will never be forgotten. He leaves behind not only a professional legacy but also a deeply personal one, one of dedication, integrity, and a profound sense of duty. Our thoughts and hearts are with his family, friends, and all who were fortunate to work alongside him.
