BREAKING NEWS: Judge to rule next week on Raney case
Special District Judge Robin Adair said he will rule April 1 on a motion to free murder defendant Jerry Raney for lack of evidence. Raney is accused of having killed his 19-year-old stepdaughter Sara Smart, whose body was found in a barrel floating in a farm pond near Haskell on Aug. 6, 2006.
In his argument, defense attorney John Echols portrayed Smart as “a girl with a serious drug problem” and said “there’s not a shred of evidence in this case — not one thing — that points to Jerry Raney.”
District Attorney Larry Moore said the case was a signature crime, that Raney had told several people over the last 15 years or more that he would kill someone and put the body in a barrel in a pond.
“That’s just talk, and talk does not count when somebody is trying to put someone away for murder,” Echols said.
Should Adair rule against the defense, preliminary hearing will continue April 1.
