"These Are The Times That Try Men's Souls"

Donnie W. Nance, Jr passed away peacefully at Grand Strand Healthcare Sunday February 21st following a brief illness. Donnie Nance Jr always said he was born under the Swamp Fox Roller coaster and in fact was born in a home not far from Withers Swash. Born to Donnie W. Nance, Sr. and Cassa Ann Jenkins Nance in 1942, Donnie, Jr was adopted & raised by his paternal grandparents Daniel W. Nance & Mary Todd Nance.  Donnie, Jr. spent his childhood playing with family members on the sand lot next to Dan & Mary's home on 7th Ave North. He spent countless hours at the 2nd Ave Pier engrossed in all aspects of fishing. Donnie's jovial personality surely was formed during his childhood as a paper boy making rounds up and down Ocean Boulevard selling newspapers and later as a lifeguard on the beach in the early years of Myrtle Beach as a tourist destination. A graduate of Myrtle Beach High School class of 1960 Donnie graduated from the University of South Carolina and obtained his degree in business while a member of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Donnie spent several years as a revenue agent for the United States Government, the Internal Revenue Service, in Charleston South Carolina and proudly always poked fun at his career path by having his personal vehicle's license plate read "ZACCHAEUS". The biblical story of Zacchaeus is used by some to illustrate the saying of Jesus: "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God" Matthew 5:8 Donnie surely was pure of heart. Donnie retired as tax collector for Georgetown County.  During his working life Donnie was most proud he was a founding member and officer of the South Carolina Association of Auditors, Treasurers, and Tax Collectors -- an association of 46 counties in South Carolina that all work together to find better ways to do the job of handling finances. Donnie was predeceased by his daughter Shawn Ellen Nance, and daughter Buffy Mack Knight.  Donnie is survived by his wife Barbara Mack Nance and his son Clay Nance, along with Clay's Mother, Joan S. Nance, Donnie & Barbara's daughter Christian Mack West (Ronny) with grandchildren, Jake Kurey, Becker West, and Rivers West. Through his biological mother, Cassa Ann Jenkins, Donnie leaves behind a sister Patricia Powell (Jesse) of Hinesville, GA. & sister Alva Reeves (Gene) of Tallahassee, FL.  Family was always near and dear to Donnie.  Donnie had a special bond with all his brothers & sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Donnie W. Nance, Jr. is also survived by brother/uncle John Henry Nance, Sr. & sister/aunt Sarah Jane Nance Watts who along with Donnie, Jr.  called Dan & Mary Nance, "Momma & Daddy". Donnie, Jr. was blessed to also know the love of Mamie Nance, 2nd wife of Donnie, Sr ., who brought along with it the love of siblings who also survive Donnie, Jr.: Richard Nance (Julie), Mary Sue Fraley (Gary), & Marvin Nance.  A celebration of life service for Donnie W. Nance, Jr. will take place at Belin United Methodist Church on Friday February 26, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Bereavement fellowship will take place immediately following the service in the Belin United Methodist Family Life Center. Donnie would want all of us to not grieve for him but to love one another, & take a kid fishing!" In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Belin United Methodist Church, The National Parkinson Foundation or The Alzheimer's Association. An online guestbook is available at www.msfh.net.
