John Ben Ankunding

Tonopah, Nev - Funeral services are pending for a former Napa man who died Tuesday, June 10, 1986 in a plane crash 60 miles northeast of here.

John B. Ankunding, 43, who had been residing in Redding and a Clovis man were killed when their light plane crashed in the rugged countryside. Mr. Ankunding was apparently piloting the plane.

Searchers spotted the wreckage Friday, Nye County Sheriff Sgt. Wade Lieseke said the wreckage was spotted by a helicopter crew in the Mosquito Creek area. Lieseke said searchers had yet to reach the wreckage, which is in a remote area accessible only by helicopter.

Mr. Ankunding resided in Redding with his wife, Carol and two daughters, Susannah and Wendy. Additional survivors include his parents, William and Lee Ankunding of Napa: one uncle, John Ankunding: and an aunt, Margaret Parnell.

He was a graduate of Napa High School and San Jose State College.
