Robert Cowen

May 22, 1946   -   June 24, 2021

COWAN, Robert W. 75 years-old, of Newton, died at home on June 24, 2021. Robert, or "Bob" as he was known to everyone, was born in Newton on May 22, 1946. He is survived by his brother Richard J. Cowan of Franklin and his wife Frances A. Cowan. He was predeceased by his parents William J. and Mary E. Cowan; and his brother William H. Cowan and his wife Nancy Cowan. Bob was diagnosed at age seven with juvenile diabetes. Throughout his life, Bob never let diabetes crush his natural optimism. He took part in research studies and tried cutting-edge devices to manage his condition. For forty-plus years, Bob was a gifted hair stylist and colorist, in demand and appreciated by his many clients. Bob's success was also due in part to his 'secret sauce' - his ability to really connect with people, regale them with funny stories and make their time in his chair truly enjoyable. Bob is dearly missed by his friends and true companions to whom he brought great joy. His nephews and nieces treasure memories of their "Coolest Uncle." For many years, Bob was devoted to his dogs, including his beloved German shepherd, Bogart. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in his memory at Our Lady Help of Christian's Church in Newton on Wednesday, July 14 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Joslin Diabetes Center in Robert's honor. Arrangements by Magni FH, Newton.

Bobby and I grew up a block away from each other.  We attended Carr School, F.A. Day and NNHS together. I've remembered him for what seems like forever.  He was the quintessential Good Guy, soft spoken and never a bad word for anyone.  I never knew that he had diabetes but so pleased for him and his family that he succeeded in having a full filling life in spite of it.  My condolences to his friends and loved ones.  I'm sure he will be missed.
