Ruth Stam (Greene)

Ruth Stam (Greene)

Ruth Stam Greene, 63, lost her courageous battle with cancer on January 22, 2010, and passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends. Born in Newton, MA on December 15, 1946, to the late Vivian and Jesse Stam, she graduated from the University of Denver and received her Master’s Degree from Tulane University School of Social Work in New Orleans. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Frederick Greene. As Volunteer Program Administrator, for the Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority, Mrs. Greene had a major role establishing in May 2001, what is known as The Blue Suede Service. This service (available in very few airports) consists of 40 - 70 volunteers, most having airport/airline experience. Recruited and trained by Mrs. Greene, they serve in small groups on a daily basis, providing direct personal service to boarding and connecting passengers. Making Memphis Airport #1 in customer service was her goal. Through her efforts, she is leaving behind a service that will continue to make Memphis International Airport exemplary in customer service.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jessica Ryan of Memphis, stepdaughters Victoria Greene of Baton Rouge, LA and Monique Greene Reid of London; grandchildren, Timothy Ryan and Abigail Ryan; brothers James Stam of Boston, MA, and Robert Stam of Jacksonville, FL. Ruth was a unique woman with an indomitable spirit and energy that was contagious, she magically touched the lives of everyone she met. She will be missed by all! Memorial service will be held Monday, January 25th, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Temple Israel, 1376 E. Massey Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
