Simply the best English teacher ever. He understood that literary criticism was all about proper criticism. Deconstructive criticism. He would engage every time I would shout out and respond with thoughtfulness that forced me to think not just react. I made sure I got my laughs. He made sure the proper points were made. He was never combative, but rather engaging. It wasn’t teacher/student, but a respectful peer conversation even though he deserved more from me, and eventually got it. It was John Harris who walked into our class around 2:50 on November 23rd and said “ I wish to God I didn’t have to tell you this, but the President has been shot in Dallas. The President is dead.” He had tears in his eyes. It took a few hours for the tears to appear in ours. You all remember that moment. ( Bob Biederman)
