Hey there Anne!  Good to connect.  Living in NYC and knowing what I now know -  may I say Mrs Hemkes was a little casual in letting us wander around a bit in TS.  It was rough in that hood then, as I learned later when I moved there.  Yes, Yorkville had those Konditerei for a few more decades. Now there's only a Shaller & Weber - all the pastry shops are gone.

Yes, the hotel that had those "ladies of the night" fighting it out in the AM right outside the door.  My first schnitzel was on that trip.

hey Rod - now I'm remembering.  And Deb Green was hassled on the street a bit.  Wow.  The good ole, bad ole days!

Glad to see the forum going strong! Be sure to encourage others to participate and try to reach out to everyone about the 50th Reunion.
Because the one day goes by so fast, I have been trying to think about other events that might allow for more time to catch up with everyone. Any ideas? One thought was to plan a picnic? Maybe a get together with other classes? We all had friends older and younger!

I agree, the more we talk about our trip to NYC the more I remember, Carol is right how were a bunch of high school kids allow out at night on TS back then, the place was sleazy. What I thought summed up the place was the giant Right Guard can that would spray steam every few minutes, as if to cover up the place. By the way, how was the UN trip? Rod and I ducked out hopped a subway to the East Village instead, we got in a world of crap for that one. well it was not the first time, nor the last time we went on some wild adventure. Looking back, we did get a great education in high school with some outstanding teachers.

I could not agree more.  NS and Cicero offered a great education to us.

I don't recall the UN part of  that German class trip, though I'm sure I went [like a good girl - [sigh]]. But sounds like you guys had a blast!

Hello fellow classmates!

Wintry day here in Liverpool. I recently joined the forum and it’s my first time posting! My name is Debbie Cain (formerly Debbie Magnanti). I graduated from NSHS in 1970. Hard to believe it’s been 50 years! I do recognize the names of many people on the forum. It’s nice to hear about what people have been up to. I notice there aren’t many who graduated from NS...mostly from Cicero. It would be nice to hear from them as well! We all have busy lives but I am hoping to make it to the 50th reunion!

i thought the Jailhouse was a topless joint either in Mattydale or out near where Penn Can mall was but on the otherside of rt 11. I  think the other was called The Deck.  Posting for a friend.

A little bar history:

The Deck was a night club that had go-go dancers on Rte 11

it became the Jailhouse that had toppless dancers, it was on Rte 11 where there is an auto parts store now.

It became the Roman Eye a toppless bar across from the A&W, where Chase Bank is now.

which became the Clinic a rock club, which after a year or so when back to being the Roman Eye a toppless bar

In Mattydale, on Rte 11 just past the Thruway bridge was the Better Half a toppless bar.

Why would I know this, I was the bar manager of some of these bars back then, also another classmate

Dick Straub was the manager of some of these places also. djh

I think Dave has everything correct. Dick Straub also managed the Bar called Batchelors where there is a plaza now. How about Close Encounters? Where was that?
My brother was a bouncer at the Deck. My batchelor party ended up there in the summer of 1973. We had the left over keg going in the parking lot! Different times!

yes they were different times, think of all the bars starting with Patty's Ranch north of Cicero all the way down rte 11 to the south side of Mattydale, and all the bars on Lakeshore Road, most are long gone. the Close Encounters was what the Clinic became across from A&W. All the bars in my earlier post, and the Bachelor's Inn were all owned by the same two guy , Joe and Leo.

Since we're on the subject I'll add a story related to The Better Half. I grew up on Factory Ave. so Mattydale was my home turf. Late one Friday night my friends and I stopped in for a cold beverage. As I walked in I heard some familiar voices. It was my dad and some of the guys from his Friday night Strike & Spare bowling league buddies. What started as an slightly awkward encounter turned out to be a very memorable night. My dad and I were always pretty tight. But after that night we for sure always had each other backs and covered for each other when questions happened to arise on the homefront.

Great story Luke! Had similar experience at Lums. BillAuyer and I had just sat down with two Schooners when my mother and her bowling team walked in!

Think we were 16 at the time!

Before the Coronavirus brought the sportsworld to a screeching halt, our Broomball Team won the Syracuse City Rec Championship for the 4th consecutive year. These guys keep me young and somehow I've got them  believing that old age and treachery equates to wisdom and experience. Some might recognize the old guy in the back row, far left as Dave Boland, class of '67, who helped coach the team (his son Cody is in the pink bandana). We also had the only female player in the league (standing center). Patrice is a soccer player and as fiesty as they come. She played great and was not afraid to go into the corners with anybody. It's a non-checking league, but it doen't mean non-contact and it's still a pretty physical game, although not as rough as the old days. I guess people are worried about going to work the next day, but apparently we didn't think about that, back in the day.

We also sent a team to the Northeast Shootout in Massena, NY, March 6-8 where we won the B Division Broomball Championship. The team was comprised of players from 3 Syracuse League teams that had not previously played together, so it was a great job as we ended beating the 15th ranked team in the country 2-0 in the final. The tournament had teams from Canada, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Rouses Point, Massena and Syracuse.

Awesome performance for your broomball team.  Haven't you heard you're "too old" to be doing that kind of stuff.  I'm impressed.  I'm not even sure I could manage to stand upright on a pair of ice skates let alone do anything useful.

Congrats George! I remember when broom ball was crazy! I never liked to play any game with sticks!
Do you all remember the game Called End Ball? I think Coach Wehinger and Coach Bader invented it? It was a little like dodge ball on steroids!

Thanks, Rock and John,

Like the T-shirt below says, you're never too old to play!!!

We had a great Broomball season, but I will say that the game is getting faster, and I'm getting slower (not that speed was ever my game). It's much harder running on ice than skating, but the hockey tourneys I was supposed to play in fell victim to the Corona Virus, as well as our own tourney, which has been rescheduled to the same weekend as the reunion. Hopefully, both events come off as planned. I only like my Corona's with Lime!!!

Hope you and your families all stay safe!!!

What did you expect, it is Alaska, Rock!
Stay safe up there! Crazy here in New York! It is like a bad Science Fiction movie!
