Fran,

Sorry to not respond to your messages earlier but have been quite busy with family and business.  However, I just wanted to comment on your brief sojurn in Sunny Southern California, namely Oceanside.  I just moved back to NY 18 months ago after spending 20 years in Oceanside, CA.  Where did you live while there.  I was in a small gated development called Henie Hills (originally owned by Sonja Henie, hence the name) off EL Camino Real about a mile north of Carlsbad.

Judd,

I do not have many memories from Oceanside, a few, and still think about your mother who was an important person in my young life as I worked in Woolworth's during high school.

Aileen, that's so funny that you mentioned my mother and Woolworths because I actually remember that you worked there with her! Kind of amazing. Were you there the day that Chubby Checker came in and signed a bunch of records for everyone? That was fun.

No but I have so many wonderful memories of Helen and the life lessons I learned.   Tell me about her!  I remember a really together lady that I was missing in my own home!

Bruce Canico, In Oceanside CA,  both of my children were born, the first one 47 years ago on the base at Camp Pendleton. We lived first in a new apt complex. I don't remember where it was. Moved onto the base for the remainder of the time there. At a point, we looked at what was a brand new, very inexpensive golf community in La Jolla. I was intrigued by what was for me a new kitchen design, open to the rest of the space. But we decided to return to NY.  Now if this is where the responses are meant to be, then I've done this right.

Happy 4th all.

Fran

Fran,

After working as a contractor in and around San Diego for 20 years, I can assure you that there is no longer anything affordable in La Jolla.  I also built a day care center and two multi-story enlisted quarters on Camp Pendleton over the years.  My home was about 5 miles from the back gate.  You would not recognize any of it now.  They just built a 300 million dollar hospital overlooking the I-5 and the Ocean just inside the main gate.  Replaced the old Navy Hospital.  Several new housing communities, gyms, dining facilities and I won't even mention the new PX and Commissary.  Oh...I guess I just did.  Oceanside has also moved upscale as well.  But it is not our Oceanside.  I loved the weather and the area but missed the east coast version.  You can't duplicate ambiance.  I am glad to be back in NY.

Aileen,

My mother was a great lady. She was a stay at home mom for most of her life and she took such great care of all of us! She really was the glue that kept us all together. She took care of the inside of the house, the outside of the house, cooked all of the meals, took us places that we needed to be, washed all of our clothes, and took care of all of our animals through the years. She was the best and we always tried to let her know that. When she went to work at Woolworths, she still tried to do all of that work at home, too, but it was obvious that we all needed to kick in a little bit more.  :-) She passed away in 1999 and one week later, my dad passed away, too and I honestly think it was because he still wanted to be with her. Tell me how she influenced YOUR life. (You can e-mail me if you want to at jhorion@yahoo.com)  Thanks, Aileen.  Judd

Interesting to see an occasional posting!... Guess you're not all croaked yet, eh?... "Happy 4 th of July" to you Clamville expatriots, from the maple syrup and Chipmunk land of "Cow Hampshire"!  Glad to be up here on the hill today, with blue skys and cool breezes instead of stuck in Long Island traffic!.. Ha Ha. Looking forward to some good food and drink shortly, and to watching the annual fiireworks insanity accross the valley. Hoo Rah! Would the Brits take our country back today?.. Not Likely! We're Bankrupt, have gone Socialist, and are awash in Illegal Spanish! It's a totally different world than it was back in 1963, eh what? Off to Concord shortly along with "Jan and Dean" in the 57 Fairlane rod to buy flowers for Miss M.  Rte 4 isn't "Sunrise Highway", but it'll do.

Bruce, I do know what happened to property values in La Jolla. Had we bought one of those models, on the golf course... well, it's not NYC but tempting in winter. The old Navel Hospital is gone? A couple of years ago, my daughter and I took a swing through. The kids thought the Oceanside- Oceanside thing was hilarious. The things I remember are funny to me, like having my first taste of Mexican food and the fog. Big fog. Wishing you a nice holiday weekend. Fran

The backstory to photo of Margot and me taken yesterday! Just home from three weeks away on the left coast (Seattle and Alaska), I was dragging. I absolutely forced myself to go out and walk to buy coffee, thinking I need coffee and the sun would wake me up.  Head down, pushing along I thought I heard, "Fran!". I looked up and saw four people. It took me a minute to recognize  Margot and Michael, Sabin and Ellen). ( Sabine and Ellen and I actually live a few buildings away from each other. The universe clearly wanted us to meet as Margot and Michael were in town for something like 4 hours before going back to FL after a stay in the Berkshires,  and I definitely had not wanted to do this errand. This unplanned reuinion was a special treat. Woke me right up.

The universe is such a surprising place! Little magnetic vectors contain us in spheres of attraction. I bump into my life often. Fran, remember meeting Dorothy Randall Gray at my house in FL, having met her before in Iceland? Love to you both

Just a note to say that my husband and I own two "hideaway hardtops" - 1957 and a 1959 just like the ad you featured in the daily updates!

Chuckled this morning to see the posting of the Halloween window painting contest. Hadn't thought of that in years and wonder if it still goes on?.. I was part of it along with some of you I suppose, but have NO idea what we put on those windows. It was somewhere near the movie theater on Long Beach road, and of course across the street from the diner. Halloween and all the special holidays were fun and exciting back when we were kids. Heck, Life was just a big adventure, and few of us had any worries... right? New Hampshire's trees are decked in sparkling colors now, but the last couple days the temperature has dropped to the 20's at night and 30's during the day...  Oh Crap! Supposedly we'll be back to the 60's later this week, but for now this old sailor is NOT enjoying that icy wind coming up out of the valley. No Witches or Gobblins in our territory, but we DO have deer and turkeys! Looks like the 50 and 57 Fords won't be out of their houses till spring arrives. Cruise nights ended at the end of September... Whaaaaaaa!

Fran, if you should see a tall handsome young reporter, ask him if his name is David. He is my nephew and works for the Arizona Republic. It is possible he will be covering that event..If it is, give him a hug from his Aunt Donna🤗

Happy healthy new year to each and all in our new year. Rob OHS 1961, my husband and I decided our mantra for 21016 is "Be a force for good in the world".  With so much bad news to deal with lets each make a commitment to do some small good for others each day and make 2016 truly a "good" year. Best to all JoEllen Caulfield Werthman

I'm so sorry to hear of Judy Goldmark's passing. We were good friends in Jr. and Sr. High. I have fond memories of us hanging out in our bedrooms, listening to our music and talking about,, mostly boys..My heart goes out to her family and her beautiful dog..

Donna, like you, I have also thought of Judy over the years. Although we weren't close friends, I remember her well for her sparkling and good natured personality. As you said, her involvement with her dog in a theraputic therapy program shows that she remained the same kind and loving person we all knew way back when. Once again, another example that fundamentally in our core being, I believe we don't change.

Feeling very nostalgic...

I have always dreamed of going to Antartica to walk with the penguins,

but I've waited too long, so now have to be content with watching

animated movies and National Geographic specials!

A more realistic place is Japan, which I hope to get to in the next

couple of years. It's been on my list ever since I had a Japanese

penpal in the fourth grade, and now that I have a half Japanese

daughter in law, it's risen higher up. My wish would be to

go there with her, my son and their children...this would

be a dream come true!
