Pete and I are sad to learn about Jone Pett Douglass's death. Her obituary is on her profile page. It seems like she always had a pleasant smile on her face. Too bad we didn't get to see her in June. I guess we'd better take a lesson from this--if there's someone you want to see or talk to from high school, do it NOW before it's too late! As unbelievable as it seems, we are getting OLD!

Thank you all for the fun comments I've just been reading and thank you Dale for telling us about Joan.  This is late in coming, but thank you so much to all those who put together that fantastic reunion.  I couldn't believe how fifty years just seemed to melt away as we were there visiting and sharing experiences with eachother once again.

It was so great to see you all again and look forward to the 55th.

.

I HAVE SO MANY WONDERFUL AND FUNNY MEMORIES OF "JJ" AS I CALLED HER.  OUR TRIPS WITH OUR OTHER FRIENDS AND SHE AND I ALWAYS HAD TO SHARE THE SAME BED, HA!

ONE PARTICULAR MEMORY I HAVE OF JONE WAS WHEN IN HIGH SCHOOL, IT WAS EVENING AND HER PARENTS, HELEN AND HAP, HAD RETIRED TO THE BASEMENT FOR A NITE OF TV. JONE AND I AND A COUPLE OF OTHERS PUT HER DAD'S BIG CADILLAC IN NEUTRAL AND PUSHED IT OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, AND ONCE AWAY FROM THE HOUSE STARTED IT AND WE TOOK OFF FOR A JOY RIDE TO SALT LAKE. THINGS WERE FINE UNTIL SOME BOYS THREW EGGS AT THE CAR AND THEN WE GOT SCARED.  WE TRIED TO GET IT OFF, AND THEN THINGS GOT EVEN WORSE WHEN WE HAD A TIRE BLOW OUT.  SOME NICE BOYS CHANGED IT FOR US AND THEN WE HEADED BACK TO "BIG O LAND".  WE GOT THE CAR BACK IN THE DRIVE WAY AND I DON'T THINK ANY OF US SLEPT THAT NIGHT.  I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW JJ EXPLAIND THE THE BLOWN TIRE AND EGG WASH (WHICH WAS DEATH ON CAR PAINT) BUT SHE WAS A MASTER AT THAT.  SO MANY, MANY GREAT MEMORIES.  I WOULD  HAVE CALLED FOUR TIMES BY NOW, BOY, HOW I MISS THAT GREAT FRIEND

AS HARD AS I TRIED, I COULD NOT GET HER TO ATTEND THE REUNION.  NOW MAYBE THE REST OF US WILL TAKE A CUE FROM THAT AND SPREAD OUR LOVE AT EVERY OCCASSION.

BYE JJ, YOU CERTAINLY LEAVE A BIG HOLE IN MY HEART...XOXO SUSIE Q

Just returned from a week at Cabo San Lucas.  Great time!  The weather was such a nice change from Utah.

Does anyone remember a play called "Sheep Go Round in Circles" which I think was written by one of our classmates? Maybe some of you were in it.  It certainly made a strong impact on me.  I've always loved theater but it was not until my "mid-life crisis" that I got up the courage to actually audition and perform.  My first role was as Bananas in "House of Blue Leaves".  I was really bananas.  When I read your messages about all the fun times you had together while you were in high school, it makes me wish I had been freer then.  Sigh. It's never too late.  If anyone has info about "Sheep", I'd love to hear it.  I'd like hear some of your experiences being in plays at BL.  P.S.  As soon as I figure out how to post a recent picture, I will.     Janet

I check in on a weekly basis.  Thanks Mike for sharing your events.

Rich and I went to Belgium, Amsterdam and Luxembourg this past May.  Had a wonderful time.  In October we will fly to Kansas City, rent a car and visit three Presidential libraries.  Eisenhower in Kansas, Truman in Missouri and Clinton's in Arkansas.  We put them all on our "things to do"  and would like to see temp all.  So far we have seen Johnson's in Austin, Tx.  Both of Kennedy's, one in  Boston and one in New York.  President Reagan  and Nixon in so. Calif.

We figured these trips would take us to parts of the country that we probably wouldn't have gone to.  So far it has been great.

Please classmates, keep us up on your activities.  I find them very interesting.  Thanks

Shanah

Wow Dan that is quite an invite, that should bring those of us silently reading these entries out of the woodwork!

That is just the spot  in the world that is on my bucket list to visit some day.  However my husband of  5+ yrs,  and I have recently returned from visiting Berlin, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg, and will be going to New Zealand in Nov. (And I have to add I feel very lucky and blessed for these opportunities)  Now just to make you feel safe from an invasion....your area didn't make it on my husbands bucket list and he's the one who's responsible for all these new adventures in my life.

So just in case there are some other silent readers out there in the woodwork,  perhaps going through some difficult, lonely or tough times,  it is comforting to know that life is and does constantly change, and also...wow....to know that just by being in the class of "62  we all know someone nice enough to pick us up from the airport in Peru.  Now that should boost anyone's day.   :)   Thanks Dan,.

Dan - I'd sure be interested to hear a few more tidbits.

Incidently, Karen (Peterson) and I are in Johannesburg, So. Africa on a mission for the LDS Church. Karen works on the Area website and Liahona. I'm helping to make the internet more accessible to the members in meetinghouses throughout the southern half of Africa, where home computers are not the norm. It's an adventure!

Hi Folks

I have wracked my brain trying to come up with something wonderful to say.  No luck.  Kathleens picture  made me chuckle.  Ahh back in the days when we wore hats.

As many of you probably went to some grandchildrens graduation..I also did.  It was planned to be outside in the football field as we had had several days in the high 80's.  WELL...  didn't it go down to 30 degrees and we all FROZE.  I thought boy this is one they will never forget!!  That said, I remember very little about graduation besides standing in the foyer waiting to file into the auditorium (while hemming my dress)  Ya I was a goof ball.  Then to Canton Cafe....thats all.

Janet  your acting sounds like loads of fun.  It's something I would have loved if not so terribly shy.

I'm amazed at all the wonderful places many of you have traveled. It would be great to hear more .  I haven't done much in that area.

Dan your adventures seem like a movie.

It's so nice to hear where and how people have ended up.

OK folks I have added my say .  This site is a wonderful opportunity.

Ruth Young

Dan,

Love the tidbits.  We all read the papers and this is like the iceing on the cake...  The behind the senes stuff.  I love aviation and have worked in it now for 30+ years.  I fly the small ones, 150's 172's and 182's.  Been up in a P-51 and have attended the Reno Air Races for some 30+ years every September in Reno, NA.  We did not attend the year that the P-51 crashed into the stands right on the finish line, where we sit every year, as I was TDY to Mumbai India.  (Timing is everything)

We will be heading to Reno (Lake Tahoe) September 12, for the races on the 14th and 15th.

I have done some aerobatic rides with my good friend and instructor out of Arco, Idaho but always envied the "Drivers" of the "Heavy Metal"  Most of the neighbors bitch a little about the noise from HAFB as the transisition from F-16 to the F-22 and F-35 has increased the noise level considerably....  Not me, to me it is the sound of freedom.  God bless all of the guys and now, some gals that fly those birds.  And God bless all of the guys that flew in NAM.  I remember more than once being overjoyed to see the F-4 Phantom USMC, or the Thunderbird Bombers (Thuds) and of course anyone on the ground loved "Sandy" flying close ground support in the Sky Raider.

Please keep the tidbits coming Dan, they help me take pride in a time when America forgot that Freedom is not necessarlly free.

Your stories are interesting and give extra insight into the real history.

Thank You

Lippy

The Vietnam Veterans' Wall

A little history most people don't know.

Interesting Veterans Statistics off the Vietnam Memorial Wall

There are 58,267 names now listed on that polished black wall, including those added in 2010.

The names are arranged in the order in which they were taken from us by date and within each date the names are alphabetized. It is hard to believe it is 36 years since the last casualties.

The first known casualty was Richard B. Fitzgibbon, of North Weymouth , Mass. Listed by the U.S. Department of Defense as having been killed on June 8, 1956. His name is listed on the Wall with that of his son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Richard B. Fitzgibbon III, who was killed on Sept. 7, 1965.

There are three sets of fathers and sons on the Wall.

39,996 on the Wall were just 22 or younger.

8,283 were just 19 years old.

The largest age group, 33,103 were 18 years old.
12 soldiers on the Wall were 17 years old.

5 soldiers on the Wall were 16 years old.

One soldier, PFC Dan Bullock was 15 years old.

997 soldiers were killed on their first day in Vietnam.

1,448 soldiers were killed on their last day in Vietnam.

31 sets of brothers are on the Wall.

Thirty one sets of parents lost two of their sons.

54 soldiers attended Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia.
Why so many from one school?

8 Women are on the Wall, killed while nursing the wounded.

244 soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War; 153 of them are on the Wall.

Beallsville, Ohio with a population of 475 lost 6 of her sons.

West Virginia had the highest casualty rate per capita in the nation. There are 711 West Virginians on the Wall.

The Marines of Morenci - They led some of the scrappiest high school football and basketball teams that the little Arizona copper town of Morenci (pop. 5,058) had ever known and cheered. They enjoyed roaring beer busts. In quieter moments, they rode horses along the Coronado Trail, stalked deer in the Apache National Forest. And in the patriotic camaraderie typical of Morenci's mining families, the nine graduates of Morenci High enlisted as a group in the Marine Corps. Their service began on Independence Day, 1966. Only 3 returned home.

The Buddies of Midvale - LeRoy Tafoya, Jimmy Martinez, Tom Gonzales were all boyhood friends and lived on three consecutive streets in Midvale, Utah on Fifth, Sixth and Seventh avenues. They lived only a few yards apart. They played ball at the adjacent sandlot ball field. And they all went to Vietnam. In a span of 16 dark days in late 1967, all three would be killed. LeRoy was killed on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the fourth anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination. Jimmy died less than 24 hours later on Thanksgiving Day. Tom was shot dead assaulting the enemy on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

The most casualty deaths for a single day was on January 31, 1968 ~ 245 deaths - the day after the launch of the Tet Offensive.

The most casualty deaths for a single month was May 1968 - 2,415 casualties were incurred.

For most Americans who read this they will only see the numbers that the Vietnam War created. To those of us who survived the war, and to the families of those who did not, we see the faces, we feel the pain that these numbers created. We are, until we too pass away, haunted with these numbers, because they were our friends, fathers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters. There are no noble wars, just noble warriors.

Please pass this on to those who served during this time, and those who DO Care.

interesting, keep them coming Dan. Question, are you recalling all of these stories as you write them, or did you keep a journal which now allows you to recall according to a timeline?
