Did Enloe beat Broughton & Pete Maravich in basketball

Anybody want to share memories on this game?  Any of you guys play in that game or polish the bench?  Of course I was a spectator (too uncoordianted to play that game.). Obvious to anyone that I grew up with knows that basketball has never been my sport ever! I like watching it, but I don't like even like holding a basketball! Painful embarassing memories being the last one picked for a pickup game!sad

I remember that it was the first time I'd seen Pete play and I couldn't believe what I was seeing!  It seemed like at times he would only take just a couple of steps over the half court line and "swish" it went in.  We had two guys on him too (memory does have a tendency to exaggerate)! smiley

How do you remember it?  Anyone know what year that was?  It was like winning the National Championship and like David slaying Goliath.

Johnny my daughter just played at Broughton gym Sunday against NCSU, since Reynolds being renovated,  and so nice to see all the memorabilia of Pistol Pete.   I was there for the Capital Classic Tourney years ago when his number was retired yet only 4 months later he was dead at age 40.  Also have nice banner in honor of Roy Teel hanging in the gym too.  Not for basketball of course!!

I remember the game all to well, Pistol Pete man handle the Eagles that night pouring in some 40 points.     George Kahdy came on the intercom the next morning saying, it's hard beating a team with magician. Pistol Pete was passing the ball between his legs, behind his back and shooting 20 footers nothing but net. No one had seen a player of this kind before , kept us all spell bound. And yes he had on his floppy socks that later became legend.

Hey Rickie...  Jog my memory a little, you know how it is when you get older, stories get bigger than life and even takes on a life of it own sometimes. This story was a biggie in my mind and correct me if I'm wrong.  I do remember he scored some 40+ point, but we still beat them, right?  He was a one man show.   I remember the gaime being at Enloe, right?  Were you on the team?  I remember afterwards a bunch of classmates getting together and putting for-sale signs on the front lawn of Broughton that night.  That wasn't a figment of my imagination of a story growing! That part I remember well! I was a little worried that we would get caught, but we didn't. smiley  So I am pretty sure we won, otherwise why the for sale signs?

Johnny, no we lost to Pistol Pete that night, I believe by some 40 points. BHS was a 4A school a very high powered Basketball, and Football teams. We doubled team Pistol Pete that night, but that didn't work, it just freeded up more of his team mates for easy baskets, he was a true artist with a basketball and that continued  throughout his college, LSU , where his father coached and into his Professional career. I don't know about the signs, but only the game that was played. I hope others will comment on game also. Rickie

Rickie, The only thing I can think that might have happened is that we maybe beat them in 66' after Pete graduated??? Beating Broughton anytime would have been a big win. That would explain the signs??? As I said in an earlier post, things do seem to exaggerate in your mind as time goes on and in my mine having Pete part of that win would been real dream? smiley Oh well, maybe another classmate can shed some light on this one???

I think it was "65-'66 and William Lloyd and I played drums in the Pep Band. My recollection is that "Pistol Pete" scored 50 and we took a drubbing.

I also played in the Pep Band when I got to Chapel Hill and in '67-'68 we played UCLA for the NCAA Championship in Los Angeles. They had "Lew Alcindor" and I witnessed yet another drubbing. Maybe I was bad luck. That was a good trip, though; we even met Andy Griffith.

First time we played them, we played them at Broughton and beat them in a close game.  Next time we played them at home and Pete destroyed us

Sandy, You are the man!!! I thought I was going crazy.  No one else could remember this it seemed like but me until now.  I started to doubt myself thinking I must have dreamed it. Even to the point that I changed the original post where I stated we beat them, but no one could remember that.  I can't believe you are the only one so far that remembers the win at Broughton.  It was like we won a national championship with us not only beating big Broughton, but with Maravich on the team.  I knew we put up for sale signs on the front lawn at Broughton that night and knew it could been because they beat us.  Thanks again for giving an ole man some hope that he hasn't gotten that senile!  smiley

That  win and the event was probably the most exciting event I have ever attended - I can clearly see how a mob mentality could take over a big crowd.  I felt like I was going to pass out.  I think it was the first time Enloe had ever played Broughton so it was probably the second year Enloe was open since we had no senior class the frist year.  The Enloe crowd was going crazy since no one gave us any chance against them (more than being the underdog).   I also remember the next game when PP stood back behind what is now the 3 point line, and shot two handed behind his head shots that dropped in all night long - they clobbered us in that second game.

Sandy, that is exactly how I remember it.  It was definitely the most exciting game I ever went to also.  I am just glad you have confirmed that I didn't dream it!!! smiley  I have been telling people for years about this event.  But after posting this and asking different classmates that didn't remember it, I started to doubt what I saw and as I said earlier, that I might have dreamed it!

Johnny and Sandy. Do you remember he was going to NCSU but did not have the grades or SAT score to get in so he went to prep school to get in but in the interim his Dad took the job at LSU and that was history.

Bob, I just saw yourr post.... I did remember that Coach Maravich went to LSU and took Pete with him, but I didn't realize it was because of grades and he went to a prep school first.  That's interesting... you have a good memory!
