I met Rich at the Sequioa track in July of 1966. I'd been a runner in both track distance and cross country a few years before. I guess I was trying to find something else to do besides work as I only knew a few people in Redwood City at that time. Rich and I ran together on the track a couple times....then he says "Want to try one of my cross country routes tomorrow?". Like a egotistical fool I agreed. There weren't hills there like there was where I'd been living - I figured it couldn't be too tough....13 1/2 gruelling miles later I changed my mind. About running. We ran again (after a weeks' recuperation for me) a couple times, but by summer's end I was working two jobs and hadn't much time for fun stuff. I know there were some painfully unfortunate times that followed school and I saw him during one of my three "geographical reruns" back to Redwood City but wasn't able to speak with him. RIP Rich....
