In Memory

Kirk S. Nelson

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee:  bind them about thy neck; write them

upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding

in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not

unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall

direct thy paths.    Provers 3:3-6

I ran with Kirk and a handful of other classmates and non classmates including Randy Pais (sp) for many years. We shared some incredible psychedelic experiences, went to Mahavishnu Orchestra concerts, and made trips to Russian River. I have Super 8 film footage of Kirk doing what was later to be called 'The Meat Dance.' We were at some two story cabin/ski house in the woods (can't recall where--Mike Pavich will remember!) with John Kikagawa, John Hayden, the Pavich brothers, and some others. We were drinking 151 rum and bbqing steaks. I was on the 2nd floor deck, turned on the flood lights and yelled "Action!!" down to Kirk. He instinctively picked up 2 huge raw Porterhouse steaks by thumb & forefinger and began a tribal dance dance for the camera. It was classic Kirk. Some day I'll dig up that footage and post on YouTube for everyone.

Kirk was kind, gentle, funny, creative, philosophical, introspective, and in some ways enigmatic. But what a great person to spend part of the 60s & 70s with. Miss you Kirk.

With love,

Steve

I can't express how great of a person Kirk was. We hung out quite a bit, mostly after we had graduated high school. He cast me as Capt. Roberts in my drama class in '67. That was quite an honor. He believed in me when I needed it. He was just a beautiful soul and loving person. The last time I saw him was at a concert at the old Fillmore West in San Francisco. We bumped into each other amongst the crowd and he gave me the biggest, joyful greeting and huge hug which I will never forget. Thanks Kirk, you are one of the best!
