Well Betsy I think I have helped you sell about 10 books and with a commission rate of 7% I think you owe me about $11.20. You can pay me at our next reunion. And that reminds me to tell you and the other 615 people from our class, minus the deceased and missing in action, that if you know how to go to You Tube you can see parts of our past reunions. Go to YOU TUBE and in the search box type in Shaker Class Of 65. Parts of the 20th and 30th Reunions should come up to view.

From:  Adrienne Glazer Sheridan
Email:  adieford@msn.com

I got the following email from Adrienne Glazer:
Hi Torchy, Hope all is well with you and yours. A friend of mine sent me a link regarding the Vietnam Wall and I was able to find Robert Vinton by Looking at Shaker Heights under Ohio. I don't know how to pass this on to the class, so, I am sending you the link to pass on to them. Thanks and Happy & Healthy 2014. Adrienne Glazer Sheridan.

My Addition:  The link Adrienne sent me did not work so I looked up Robert Vinton myself.  There is a site that shows his name and where he is located on the wall.  You can leave a message and some from our classmates already did write a note.  Here is a link to the page for Robert Vinton:

Greetings again,

Our class website has become a huge success, if I do say so myself. The majority of you have registered. Once you register it opens up a whole new world of private communications which has already been illustrated in many ways. The comments left on those pages of the deceased have been very reflective. This is a way to reach out in perpetuity. Our Shaker Class of 65 site will hopefully remain up and running for years to come and does not exist just for information about our next reunion. That brings me to the fact that this website will also serve as our “Memory Book” with pictures and video from our pending 50th reunion. In fact, right now you can see video clips from past reunions on many of the profile pages of your classmates. However, you must be registered to see those pages. Remember your page is yours and can be edited by you at any time in the future. PLEASE feel free to add pictures or anything you want to say to your former classmates. You can even advertise or post a link to any website that expresses anything appropriate about yourself. For those who are computer challenged I can help. Contact me or just send me the photo that you want to post, and I can do it for you as the administrator of the site. That brings me to a sticky point that I would like to get off my chest right now. Let's face the fact that nobody from our class looks as good at age 67 as they did the day when they attended their senior prom. Wait a minute, I just changed my mind. I can think of two girls who do look better today, but wild horses could not drag that information out of me. Maybe if you beg me when I see you in person I can whisper their names, but it is only my opinion and does it really matter at this stage in the game? Most of you have heard of “Selfies” taken with your cell phones. If you are not into that then why not scan a recent picture you like of yourself and/or your family. If you can not scan it then have one of your kids do it for you or even a grandchild. This is your page and you can create it anyway you decide. I am pushing this because everyone wants to know about YOU today, “inquiring minds want to know.” Don't be shy at this stage of the game. Feel free to express yourself about and/or what your life is like now. Many of you have already posted recent photos that are meaningful to your life and makes your page newsworthy. The memories that you have posted so far are extraordinary. We all have different perspectives of the past so why not write them down. Why leave your page mostly blank? With the internet we can preserve our history and at the same time have some meaningful connection. I might have stated the following before but it is worth mentioning again, this is more than high school. For most of us it transcends our whole childhood while growing up in Shaker Heights. Other Shaker Classes have copied us and are now using this same format. Let's make ours the best. I have also been contacted by the person doing Cleveland Heights High's Class of 65 Reunion and have been advising them. They started using the same platform available on line. It would be a shame if they had more participation than we did. If that happens I would not be able to sleep at night. You don't want me to double up on Ambien do you ????

One last thing, please take a look at those who are still missing. Go to the site at

www.ShakerClassOf65.com and on the left side of the home page click on the words MISSING CLASSMATES. Maybe you can contact a brother or a sister or some other relative that you might know who is still living. Maybe they have information about that missing classmate. I am thinking some might be deceased but hopefully most are still alive somewhere.

Here's LQQKING at you kid,

Edward Torchy Smith

Hi-

I want to post a response to what James Winer posted today:

"I appreciated your comments on Dan (Biello). Unfortunately, cancer treatments are not much more effective now than they were 30 years ago, the death rate is almost the same. There are safe, natural approaches that are much more effective, and enhance wellness rather than ruin the body. Go on www.youtube.com and type in: Cancer, the forbidden cures, and watch that video. Also, www.gerson.org I have had many cancer patients that overcame the disease through our dietary regimen, including ones that were given a matter of weeks to live. Too bad Dan was wedded to the failed medical model of treating symptoms with disfiguring surgery, radiation burning, and chemo poisoning."

I respectfully have to take issue with what James Winer wrote. I'm sorry, but it struck a nerve with me. To say that cancer treatments are not much  more effective now than they were 30 years ago is just plain incorrect. As somebody who has been raising funds for cancer research through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for several years, I know this to be false. Antibody based therapies such as Rituxan were developed in the 90's.  Targeted therapies such as Gleevec were developed in the 2000's. Adoptive Immunotherapy has advanced greatly in the 2010's. ALL of these are saving lives today!

Children with the most common type of  childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have a survival rate of more than 90% today . ALL accounts for about 3 out of 4 cases of childhood cancer. From 1990-1994 the survival rate was 83.7%. In the 1960's the rate was 10%. ALL is no longer a death sentence for children.

A study in the UK has shown that in 1990, 220 in every 100,000 people died of cancer. Thanks to research improving the outcome for patients, this fell overall by 22 per cent to 170 per 100,000 in 2011. Between 1990 and 2011 the cancer mortality rate for women fell by 20 per cent from 185 down to 147 per 100,000. For men deaths dropped by 26 per cent from 277 down to 203 per 100,000.

These are just a few examples of survival improvements in the past 30 years.  There are many others. I think James message must be very discouraging to people who have been recently diagonosed or are living with cancer now.  There may well be an effective treatment for you. I am not saying that one should totally discount natural remedies or a change in diet, but maybe combining them with treatments from the medical world would be a better path to follow.  Please see a hematologist or oncologist if you are diagnosed with cancer.

I'll end by saying that bone marrow transplantation has improved tremendously since the late 1970's as well. If it hadn't I wouldn't be alive today!

Well said (written), Dennis, with statistics to back up your points.  I would hate for people not to avail themselves of treatments that have helped millions.

For those of you who may not know. Bennett Tramer created and wrote the hit series “Save By The Bell.” It is still shown somewhere everyday. Now the Torch has been passed. ( My favorite line. I use whenever I can.) Bennett's daughter has just written her first TV show. Bennett is low key about himself.  The following is a part of an email I got from him:

Her first writing credit!  Sonya and I split up this announcement, and I'm just going to be lazy and copy below the relevant info she wrote to her batch.  Viewing is not mandatory, but I thought you might want to know.
That proud father,
Bennett

Dear everyone I’ve ever met, My daughter, Ava, has written her very first episode of a TV show, and it is airing tonight (Tuesday, March 4th) at 9:30 on ABC. The show is called Trophy Wife, but  it is not the trashy reality show it sounds like—it's a good-natured family comedy about Kate, a young pretty woman (Malin Akerman) who falls in love with Pete, an older man (Bradley Whitford).

Dennis ... I agree with you completely!  I opted for surgery and radiation to be cancer free ... I'll take those scars any day!

I would like to post a brief response to the post from Dennis Bayer.

While I do not dispute the biomedical advances made over the past 30 years especially in juvenile leukemia, it is a sad fact that for some the advances have come too late. I lost my only sister in 1992, even though she received treatment for leukemia at Cleveland Clinic, a world-renowned institution. However, I agree with my homeroom mate Bennett Tramer that Dennis' statistics are well offered, and one must keep in mind that the rate of progress in biomedical advances is more than arithmetic--it is close to geometric. I have published 2 leading-edge review articles (not on cancer) in a certain biomedical journal, and i can honestly say it is only with great effort that the newest technical protocols can be comprehended even by someone with experience. (For the record, I am not a biomedical professional.)

I have always loves Saved by the Bell as did our whole family! And nice that your daughter is carrying forth your tradition!

Congratulations Betsy on your new book! I will look for it.

And thanks Torchy for doing such a great job with the site! It's wonderful to reconnect with everyone again.

For anyone interested in the new brain science, take a look at one of the books I have written with my husband on the subject:

The Dao of Neuroscience (published by Norton)

Neuroscience for Clinicians (Springer)

Or attend a workshop on enhancing your brain at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. It's a beautiful place and quite an idyllic experience--right on the Pacific coast with magestic views. They grow their own food right there. It will take you back to the 60's in some ways, in a warm supportive atmosphere.  Our workshop is "Transformation through Neuroscience: Enhance Your Brain to Reach Your Potential "   Weekend of May 9-11, 2014 Here's the link:  http://www.esalen.org/workshop/weekend-may-9-11/transformation-through-neuroscience-enhance-your-brain-reach-your

And for any therapists out there, please consider attending one of my workshops titled "Neuroscience for Clinicians: Brain Change for Anxiety, Truama, Stress, Moods, and Substance Abuse". My husband and I teach it all around the country. It will be webcast from Orlando, Florida on April 10, 2014. Here's the link: https://www.pesi.com/search/detail/index.asp?eventid=24192

And if you want to get away, please join us on an Alaskan Cruise this September:

I am happy people are responding to comments, even though many are overly optimistic about conventional medical treatments, especially for cancer. I would suggest that the open-minded among you check out two items on the internet:   www.youtube.com  type in: "Cancer The Forbidden Cures". Also go to: www.gerson.org

I agree. Please go to the internet and check out Gerson Therapy. Just do a Google search on it. Don't just go to their website!

While you are at it, please watch this video https://www.youtube.com/v5IrHV8tLCU

Stay well,

Dennis

Yesterday I met with Linda Klein Buchwald from our class. Here is our video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoSmWaWzKT4

I also saw Mimi Becker at her art show at the JCC here in Beachwood. A few other classmates of ours were also in attendance. I apologize to Debbie Shaprio Brown as when I first saw her I got her mixed up with another one of our classmates. It is not easy to connect 615 names with 615 faces after 7 PM at night in one of these long winter days in  NE Ohio. That is my excuse and I am sticking to it.  Here is a short video of Mimi last night.

These videos are also posted to their profile page. Feel free to add any link of a video of yourself or family to your page.

Here is a piece oh history you should all remember from high school.

Linda Winchell (Smith)

I totally agree with Dennis. After working in a lab associated with diagnosis and treament of leukemia and also the Bone Marrow Transplant unit, the advances in treatment and drug responses are amazing. Gleevec has changed the world for CML patients who only could be cured previously with BMT. The new drugs being produced based on genetic targets are have opened up a new era in cancer treatment. Anyone not availing themselves of proven treatments is doing themselves a disservice.

Hi Torchy!

You are simply awesome....for so many reasons. It was wonderful being with you and Linda  (Klein) last night.  Thank you for coming to my show....

And I think the video is a riot! The night was great fun!

Keep in touch....and keep moving FORWARD!

Be well,

Hi Everybody-

I'm posting a shameless plug and request here. :-)

The American Comedy Awards will be held March 15. My niece, Vanessa, is in the runnig for Best Supporting Actress - TV.  She is a cast member on Saturday Night Live.

Vanessa is the daughter of my brother Todd who was three years behind us at Shaker High, and Carolyn (Polster) Bayer, his wife. Todd was also my bone marrow donor.

You can vote for Vanessa now at this site:

http://www.nbc.com/american-comedy-awards-vote    by going to the Best Supporting Actress - TV category.

The one hitch is that you have to be on Facebook to vote.

Looking forward to the reunion,

Thanks,

Dennis

Barbara Horovitz (Brown)

not only do you have to be on facebook, you have to agree to give them your friend list, but I figured if that was necessary to give Vanessa my vote, I would do it. I thought friends could ignore anything they might get emailed from Facebook if they chose to. Wishing Vanessa good luck. Barbara

Ooops sorry about that. I'm not on Facebook so I didn't know. Thanks for voting!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mZ0ApTA-y4Hi Dennis--I voted for Vanessa also.  Have been a faithful fan of SNL in forever.  Vanessa is hysterical.  I love when she does the little Jewish Bar Mitzvah boy-- Oy-- is  he obnoxious or what--LOL.  Glad to hear that you are doing well.
