Sure, Betsy. Just an honest response! I found your novel NAKED a fascinating book on many levels.  Betsy Davis aka Betsy (Elizabeth) Hennig

With all the advice Mr. Winer is offering, you might want to read these opinions first

Question: I was the person who posted about Rob Vinton being killed in Viet Nam, and I certainly honor his memory as I'm sure we all do.

But in a class of 615, surely there were others? Does anyone know?

This message is a reply to the question posted by Betsy Henning Davis.

In answering your question, Betsy, about another classmate dying in Viet Nam ( other than Robert Vinton) there was one other.  However he did not graduate with our class as he got put back one year while at Shaker during his High School years. I am not sure which year that was.  His name was Anthony (Tony) Callata or Colota, or something close to that spelling.  Maybe another classmate here can correct me and expand on his service in Nam.  I do remember he went to Moreland and then Woodbury.

Marguerite Comella (Tench)

Tony Culotta was my cousin.  We went to school together at St, Dominic's, before we both moved on to Woodbury and Shaker High.  The story I was told at the time was that he was only in Viet Nam for a matter of weeks, when he was killed by a bomb near the area where his group was located.  His funeral was held in Mayfield Hts. at Dicicco's funeral home in the winter/spring of 1969.  I remember that I was pregnant at the time I went to the funeral, but not the exact month.  So sad.  What a waste.

Betsy, I not only remember Bob Vinton but his girlfriend Jane Karch who was a close friend of mine ( we went to Europe  together).  Bob and Jane came to my house the evening before he left. I think Ken Rini  was there too. (We're you Ken?).  As I remember, he was deployed to rescue wounded soldiers   We were young and very proud of him and did not comprehend the risks.  He is a hero.  When I last saw Jane, she was married and interested in antiques. I see that she has died, does anyone know what happened to her?

I remember Mary Hopwood mostly from Boulevard Elementary School.  She was quiet with a gentle soul.  I remember being at a party at her house in sixth grade, I think the whole class was there.  I remember just bits and pieces of the party.  Mary Beth Jobe.....water.....white blouse.....blushing.....  Very true story. Thanks for the party,  Mary Hopwood.

Hi  Mary Beth and Rennie ... I did not know, Mary Beth, that you and Jane Karch had gone to Europe together but I had lost track of Jane for many years and finally reconnected with her at the 40th reunion.  We had such fun together the following year tramping through Mass-Conn on an antique journey and stayed in close touch with each other for the next five years..  Jane was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010 and fought bravely finally losing the battle on 9-11-10.  I still miss her and her infectous laugh.  And Rennie .. I also remember Mary Hopwood, and I agree, she was a gentle soul.  I always thought it funny that we could look out the window of Jill White's 6th grade classroom at Boulevard Elementary and look directly at Mary's house. I lost track of so many people for so many years, but reading Torchy's posting yesterday gave me pause as I reflected back on those very early years.  Thanks to you both for the nice comments

I also attended Boulevard School. I was sorry to read that Mary had passed away. I lived 2 doors down from the Hopwoods on Southington. Ginny (I believe that was your nickname and probably still is), I could not not quite see my house  from my 6th grade classroom since I had Mr Evans. In some of the other grades I certainly could (Miss Rogers possibly). I attended one of my grandson's lacrosse games recently at Boulevard. It certainly brought  back fond memories.

Hi Jim and Ginny. It is so much fun to hear from elementary school friends!  Boulevard leaves good feelings. (Long term memory must be kicking in!)

Roger, thank you for birthday wishes!  Hope to see you all at the reunion!

Attention Boulevard graduates and other friends of Jane.

I knew Jane Karch from Woodbury but only to say hello. I knew her much better after High School. It would seem that we would always cross paths as she lived near me. She also taught in the Shaker School system. I knew of her illness since she had mentioned it to me one time when I saw her with her husband at a restaurant.  I also saw her at Heinens many times while doing grocery shopping.  The last time I saw her there she looked fine. She stopped me and wanted to know why we did not have a 45th class reunion. She was not smiling when she asked that question and she asked me about some people from our class. I remember leaving her with her saying again that we really should have had a reunion. Jane died about a month later. I had no idea she was that sick.

I knew Jane from Onaway on, and unlike so many people on this site, who I haven't seen since the LBJ Presidency, I saw Jane at a ceremony at Shaker Heights High in the mid 1990s.   She was a teacher at our old alma mater, I believe in Special Education.  She was as friendly as ever - within two minutes of talking with her it was if we were back in Mrs. Turner's fourth grade class in 1956.  I remember I told her I always thought she'd be some great college athlete (she excelled at every sport) but  apparently she'd never fully got over a knee injury.   It was terrific seeing her, she was a truly kind person and always fun to be around.   It's hard to think of her as gone, but she'll live on in all of our memories.

Class,

Betsy, I'll have to take a look at your novel NAKED.

Marguerite, I'm sorry to hear about your cousin Tony.  The soldiers are much in my prayers.  I remember seeing you, Marguerite, and your family at St. Dominic's mass.

Do I have this right?  Debbie Fry died in her early twenties of a brain tumor.  That is really sad for me.  Debbie and I were friends.  I remember Debbie's little laugh and smile when somebody would say something and she would know what was really behind the comment - even though it wasn't expressed that way.

I posted a couple of messages elsewhere but I have not seen them anywhere.  So...trying this route.

!.  To betsy Verne Franco - I read your book, Naked", a couple of months ago and enjoyed it.  It had an interesting twist but was about art which I always enjoy.

2.  My husbsnd and I just went to his 50th H.S. Reunion in Philadelphia.  It was unfortunate that they employed a very loquacious Disc Jockey to entertain us with very loud music.  When classmates are trying to reconnect and many have come from a distance they are interested in trying to talk and reconnect, not scream.  The only alternative to sitting at a table and trying to eat what was served was to get up and dance the Twist, Bristol Stomp, The Pony, the Mashed Potatoes....... No one could talk and eating with company at the table when everyone kept getting up to dance was rather ridiculous.  I seem to remember that at our last reunion there was no disc jockey and we had a lot of time to circulate and reconnect.  I don't even remember having a sit down dinner.  Better a buffet or a lot of heavy hors d'oeuvres where people can continue to circulate and tables where they can congregate but not get stuck at.  I am sure those coming from a distance would rather talk than dance!   Please voice your opinions so that the planning committee will be aware of what people prefer.  Personally, I get tired of all the weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, bars, etc. where the music is ear splitting.

Gerry, how are you? I miss Draeger's.  Gerry's father and my father were educators and friends.

Leah, you are good in remembering names of those in the Sussex class picture.  Julie North and I were friends.  She continued school at Hathaway Brown.  I went to her wedding.  Afterwards, she may have resided in Virginia.

I just took a walk down memory lane as I looked at the Onaway pictures. Thanks to whoever gathered and submitted them. They are a lot of fun. I can use some help filling in the names … a magnifying glass is recommended!

Last Sunday, June 1, I completed the 100 mile bike ride at Lake Tahoe with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. The weather was gorgeous and the ride went well. Aggie and I got to spend some time with Bob and Sue Novasel. As usual it was great to see them. There were only 743 TNT riders from around the country this year, which is way down from almost double that in previous years.  All of the teams from around the United States raised a total of $3.4 million for cancer research. The San Francisco Bay Area teams raised $530,000.00.  Our North Bay and Marin team raised just under $100,000.00 which surpassed our set goal. I was able to raise $8,000.00.  I had donations from 60 people AND 26 of those donations came from Shaker High Friends!  Pretty amazing after almost 50 years! Thank you!

Dennis, if you send me the mailing instructions for "TNT," your ride will have raised $8,500.

Continued good health to you.

Wow. Thanks Ron, that would be great. The instructions are on my profile. I think they may still be taking donations for a couple more weeks for this season, but if not, I hope to do it again next year! :-)

Does this mean that I'll have a riding companion if I come to reunion?

Dennis Bayer

I just read your profile Barbara and see that you ride. That's great. You should come do AMBBR some day.  I wasn't planning on bringing my bike to Cleveland. I don't think I could handle the heat in July. I'm already worried about showing up at the reunion a soaking, sweaty mess!   I don't do well in the heat. Anything over about 72° and I'm soaked!  It will probably be 90!
