David Brown might be humble, but he has a terrible memory.  CHHS always beating Shaker in sports?  In the fall of 1964, our senior year, we destroyed Heights in football.  And then in the spring our state champion team beat them in baseball.  CHHS star Dana Woodring (a very nice guy) went to college with me, and I used to kid him about both games.  He occasionally laughed.

I have two questions and wondered if anyone might recall the answers to the following:

1)  Who was the excellent, older Civics Teacher at Woodbury who would intone: NTBM (not to be missed) when making a point you knew would be on a future exam?

2) Does anyone remember how our homeroom, Mr. Hansen's, pooled money that was collected at Christmastime every year until our senior year when we finally honored this good man with a Christmas gift???

I always have thought that whomever thought of this idea was so clever; I am sure Mr. Hansen never forgot this particular homeroom class.

I would also like to add that I am so troubled by the comments Maxine Griff wrote in the reunion booklet for our 40th.  As the recipient of some hurtful, snarky remarks, I certainly can empathize with her and would like to apologize if I ever made an unkind remark to her.

I think I was in your homeroom class. He was a very nice man. Was it a woman or man civics teacher at Woodbury? I love your caring comment to Maxine Griff. I don't remember her  statement in the memory book.

barbara, i too was troubled by the comments you referred to in the last reunion book.  your present comments are very kind and loving.  some people get over hurts over the years and other people don't.  i have got rid of most, but still have held onto a few from junior and senior high school.

In defense of Torchy & the Reunion Committee: It was the fault of Mother Nature sending Cleveland a too-lively thunderstorm that knocked out the power at our 40th Reunion. Not the fault of Executive Caterers who had a number of generators humming. Oh, the humidity!!  Thunder & lightening can't strike twice...ten years apart....right??  See you in July (if my spine surgery goes well!)  Happy New Year!

Hi all,

I, too, was troubled by Maxine Griff's comments in the memory book. They were extremely sad. I remember her well, though I never had any interaction with her. She was definitely bullied by insensitive comments made concerning her physical appearance throughout the Shaker years. If not said behind her back, then as "mean kids will do", they were said by classmates walking by her and laughing, knowing she was within earshot of their painful and lastingly hurtful words.  From what I remember, it was never the girls but always the guys. Now that bullying has finally become a major topic, I think the best we can hope for is that those who were the aggressors have grown out of their abusive behavior and that Maxine will one day rise above the pain that she so sadly harbors.

January 15th, 2015  ........I just received the following message from Peter Snedecor:

Torchy - Ginny Dunn Fields died today. She had serious heart surgery in late October, and it went badly. She never really recovered. There will be a memorial service in Atlanta. I'll let you know the details when I know more myself.

I see that the Embassy Suites are two room suites with two rooms that appear to be quite self contained -  share a bathroom and no doubt a door, but otherwise pretty much independent. I would be interested in sharing a suite for Friday and Saturday nights - anyone interested?

Hi Torchy Wishing you and our classmates a wonderful 2015 and our reunion being part of that wonder. Wanted to share some good fortune that came my way. I am excited that my company Spirit of Leadership Services LLC Experiential Learning with Horse and Nature is being well received and getting recognition. We have a feature story about our leadership and teamwork with horses experience in the Case Western Reserve University 2013-2014 Yearly Report. both in the magazine and on line. There is a short article, picture, a testimonial quote from Jodi Berg CEO of Vitamix and a cool video of the Ranch and horses on line To see it you can go to case.edu/think beyond (we are the fourth story) Our herd of six wise horses, one mischievous pony and a courageous zebra have guided leaders and teams from companies such as Mars(as in snickers), Lubrizol, ArcelorMittal Steel, University Hospitals, Weatherhead School of Management and commanders from the Israeli army to be their authentic best selves in their personal and work lives. I wondered if this is appropriate to post and if so if you could post it for me. Warmly Jackie Schloss Lowe Stevenson

Ginny's funeral arrangements are being handled by Roswell Funeral Home, Roswell, GA.  Her obituary is listed under Virginia Ellen Fields.

Visitation is Tuesday, Jan 20th 4-8:00

Funeral is Wed. Jan 21st at 11:00

Ginny was my friend at Boulevard, unfortunately we drifted apart during Jr High and High School. Thankfully through this website we were able to reconnect.  It was great to talk and laugh with her and swap stories about our early years together.  Ginny taught me to dip potato chips in mustard and in her honor I dipped some chips today.  Gone too soon!

I do not know who this is but I got the following email for the whole class:

From:  STETSON AMES
Email:  stetsames@comcast.net

Remembering childhood years, 2nd-6th grades at Boulevard, I found the school and started looking for teachers on the web. Sadly, 4th grade's Mrs Baird died last Dec. Pretty Jill White, 6th, was mentioned, and I looked out those same classroom windows. Sadly, I discovered that Ginny Dunn had so recently died. I found her picture, and the past came back. She was a "girlfriend" who taught me how to jitterbug went to parties, and movies in Shaker Sq. I must agree, she was cute, funny, smart, and a lot of fun. While sitting on Bascom Hill at UW-Madison one fine day, I overheard others talking nearby. I'd had to move to IL by 7th grade, but we talked and I caught up some about shared friends and classmates. Chris (Matey) a track star? When I last saw you, you were casted due to your tendon being cut at Danny's. I recall how sorry he was, too, and I'm glad you healed. We spoke of others, some whom I see are on the '65 class list. To all of you who may remember me, I say hey; what a surprise today has been.

It's been 55+ yrs, and I didn't live there long enough to attend Woodbury, so this is all very dated contact from within relatively few of you. But here's a little more, just in case. Rennie, I remember you playing your clarinet in the front row as I atruggled with a trombone further back. I went to a party at Mary Beth's, and you two were a number back then! Randy Hughes was a friend, along with Peter Dingle, who lived next door to Chris on Drexmore. There were others I recall as Boulevard classmates, and after discovering this site, I couldn't help but renew the past to add that I rember those days fondly. We were young only once, and I can see how friendships continued.

SOLO EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT - The first of 2 solo exhibitions is up and runs through March 8 at the SOUTHERN VERMONT ARTS CENTER, Manchester, VT.  24 abstract paintings are hung in Gallery One of the Yester House Gallery Bldg.  Other rooms have 8 other solo shows exhibiting simultaneously. I was asked to specifically hang abstracts to try and shake up the Vermont genre of cows, barns and New England landscapes.  If you live within driving distance of SVAC I would be so tickled for you to see some of my work.  The Arts Center is open Tues. - Sat, 10-5pm and Sun. 12-5pm.  It is located on West Rd. The grounds of SVAC include outdoor sculpture, a museum, performance hall, art educsation studio space, Yester House Galleries and walking trails on the side of a beautiful mountain overlooking the valley.  I would suggest picking a nice day to venture out.  There is quite a switchback access road up to the center's bldgs.  I saw some peole snowshoeing on the grounds last weekend and if you are downhill skiers Stratton and Bromley are close by.  Go to www.svac.org for further info. and click on my name on the Classmate profile list for a few images from the show.

I guess the abstract photos never made it onto the classmate profiles.  So I WILL MOVE ON.  The next exhibit, also a solo show is at Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany, NY.  This is the third year that I have been invited to exhbit.  The space is well lit and the patrons of the theatre performances are also very appreciative visual art patrons.  It's a good match for me.  This exhibit will be up and running during the production schedule of the play "Souvenir" from Feb. 27 - March 22.  Opening reception is Albany's First Friday on March 6 from 5-8.  This exhibit can be seen during box office hours and two hours before every production.  www.capitalrepertory theatre.org.  I will try to add some images.  The abstracts are from the Southern Vermont Solo show and the landscapes are for the Cap Rep Exhibit.  Since they overlap the paintings are totallly different for the two shows.    mail.com

Hi Torchy. In the course of my attempts to contact a childhood friend, Steve Cohn, with whom I'd shared friendship and the neighborhood while attending Boulevard School, I now find that he died March 19, 2014 following a lengthy illness. His obituary can be found on the web as STEVEN SAMUAL COHN. It refers to him and his family as I knew them, and while I now mourn his early death, am not at all surprised about the quality of his life and accomplishments. Perhaps others in our class, from Boulevard through Shaker High valued his life, also, and would care to know of his passing.

Hi Everyone;  I have enjoyed the Shaker website and was planning to attend the reunion in July.  We had reservations and everything.  However, my husband, Norman and I have suddenly decided to move closer to our daughter in the Washington DC area.  It's a healthy step to downsizing and moving closer to family before we are so old that we are incapable of being excited about a new adventure.  We are looking forward to lots of stuff that Albany does not have although we have loved living in Albany, NY since 1973 and in this one house for 35 years.  We are closing on a condo the first week of May and also beginning the process of selling our home and packing up and moving.  WE just can't plan on the reunion with everything that is going on.  I will send more info when this is a fait accompli.

ANNOUNCING A NEWLY PUBLISHED BOOK by my husband, Norman Dovberg

In the midst of moving I just remembered that I would like to announce that my husband Norman has published a Kindle Book (only $4.99, such a deal) which some of you might enjoy reading.  It's a religious and social satire,  espcially in the first section which is written in a  stream of consciousness style similar to Jack Kerouac's "On The Road".  The last two thirds of the book are more of a novel and easier to read.  If you are a fundamentalist Christian you may have a hard time with some parts of it, but Norman feels that if you read it with an open mind it could be a life changing experience for you.  If you are not a religious Christian you will find some of it to be uproariously funny, but overall it has an extremely serious and important message for today's world.  It is thought provoking and, of course, I would highly recommend it!  Additionally it will give you a glimpse into why I, a shiksa, have had so much fun being married to this guy for 46 years.  Find it on Kindle listed under "Cosmic Casino: The True Word of A. Lester Lord as Transcribed by Joseph D. Nehemiah" (a pun on Norman's name).  The sequel is in process and it will continue the story of Lester's experience of being a mortal human and will include his psychoanalytic psychotherapy under the care of Nehemiah.  This will provide a behind the scenes look at the process of psychotherapy from the point of view of the therapist (Norman was a Psychiatrist) which has rarely been available to the public in such a readable form.  If you read "Cosmic Casino" I would love to hear your thoughts. Reviews on Kindle, whether negative or positive, are also appreciated.

Thank you for your  information on Tony Culotta.  On 4-30-14, item # 82, I tried to say a few things about him, but your description was right on.  Tony was my cousin, and we went to St. Dominic's together for many years before we both moved on to the Shaker Schools.  John Day has also inquired about him.  You were right that he was a gentle nice person.  What a waste to lose him.  I still remember his funeral after all these years.

Just reread the Cosmo article on Life in Shaker Heights aka Utopia.  Especially enjoyed Ghoulardi crashing the Szell party and Dorothy Fuldheim in the Breck ad (that was Dorothy, right?)  No wonder the Cleveland Heights kids were so envious of us.  I remember one bus ride to the Shaker-Cleveland Hts Friday night football game when some enterprising individual on our bus changed our chant from "Oh, we're from Shaker High School and no one could be prouder, and if you cannot hear us, we'll yell a little louder" to "Oh, we're from Shaker High School and no one could be prouder, and if you cannot hear us, we'll buy you out."  Ah, the good old days :)

I am still trying to find Dank Volk from our class.

He is not someone that totally disapeared after the High School years.  Please see this video about him.

Copy and paste to your search bar.  Watch Danny on the Smothers Brothers Show. They spelled his name wrong there.

Torchy, I just googled him (I don't remember him at all, but I think his career is astounding) and found a story from 2002 saying he lived in Monrovia CA.  Also I found a Museum of Yo-Yo History (www.yoyomuseum.com) that has a message board.  I'm sure you've already followed these leads, but I thought I'd pass them on anyway.
