Great! Now we gotta pitch in a get Gayla a prize for being the first grandparent in the class(assuming one of Breit's illigitimates hasn't already had one somewhere). This deal is already getting too expensive. I'm out.

Kidding. Congrats to Gayla!

Chris... let's not be a wayward fan.. especially about our beloved Yellowjackets.. I, too, had the privilege of watching SHS this season and I noticed several names of children of our classmates in the program. To me it is not so much about who is winning or losing but the experience of the game and certainly the effort of the kids who are playing.. Remember those days??

Reunited and it feels so gooood...

Hey Carrie. How's it going? Didn't it just seem like yesterday you and that one dude, me and Gayla were going to Magic Springs(7th grade). Now she's a grandma!! Incredible.

I think we should have a Woodstock adventure on my family's farm! We could have a jousting contest with Robert...Naked...He He
Just kidding. I love all the ideas. My sister works for Hilton and is trying to see what price they could offer us in Hot Springs. They really need a specific date due to high traffic times of the year. She will let me know when she finds out.

I do remember the old days and they were great days, that I took a lot of pride in being a Yellowjacket. I have gone to at least one ball game a year sometimes more since graduation. Our reunion of the 1987 Football team last year raised $2,700 for the current yellowjacket football team. I am even Vice-President of the Yellowjacket Touchdown Club. But I just don't see the pride, the passion, like when we played. That doesn't mean I won't go back, and support the yellowjackets. I want them to do well, but they are really struggling now. The main thing I was trying to say is that I would like this night to be for ourselves. It's been 20 years since a lot of us has seen each other. I want this to be a very special event, that we will remember forever. I ain't got nothing but love for the town, the community, and the Sheridan Football Team. But especially for my class members of 1989!!!

Jamie Ellington(Winfrey) is a grandma now too as of today from what I heard this afternoon!!!

Wow! Take a break for a few days, and look at all the conversation I've missed! You guys have some great ideas, and I'm game for Hot Springs or whatever the group decides. I do believe, however, that many people who still live in or around Sheridan would save a lot of money if they could stay at home for the night, rather than paying a hotel bill. And even people who don't live here may have friends or family members with whom they could stay for free. (I have a big couch and a couple of extra beds, so some of you could crash here if needed!)

After paying airfare or high gas prices to get here, I'd hate for people to have to pay another large amount of money just to have a place to sleep. And I'd also hate for anyone to refrain from coming because of financial restraints. For that reason, and regardless of where we decide to have the reunion, I'd like us to set up a method for donations as soon as possible because I'd like to donate monthly to cover my own expenses as well as some of the expenses of others.

But before completely abandoning the Sheridan alternative, I think we should carefully consider a few things. Aside from the cost issue discussed above, some people who don't live here anymore would probably enjoy seeing the old school and town again. I know the reunion is mostly about reconnecting with former classmates, and we can accomplish that anywhere, but Sheridan is also a special place and some people might like to spend more time in town while they're here. (Doesn't matter that much to me, 'cuz I live here!)

Attending a home football game might be something a lot of people would enjoy, and their kids might enjoy it too. We could probably even block off a section of bleachers or something with a "Class of '89" banner and all sit together. Either before or after the game, perhaps we could arrange for a tour of the high school building. I don't know about any of you, but I haven't set foot in the place since our last day of school. I think it'd be kind of neat to walk down the halls again and relive some old memories.

The next day (Saturday), we could either head to Hot Springs for the remainder of the weekend, or have a family picnic at the Sheridan Rec Center. There's basketball, tennis, skateboarding, playground equipment... And that evening, we could go the Country Club for a fairly low price and hire a band or DJ or whatever. The food could be catered, and that would be the biggest expense of the whole weekend (aside from travel expenses for out-of-towners). I am in favor of a cash bar, though. No reason for non-drinkers to foot the bill for the rest of us!

Don't get me wrong... I don't feel particularly strongly about having the reunion in Sheridan, and Hot Springs would certainly be nice, I just don't want us to toss out the Sheridan option so quickly, just because a few of our more vocal classmates prefer to go another route. There are a lot of voices we aren't hearing. But Chris is right, if we're going to have it at a nice hotel, time is of the essence. Hotels, convention centers, and tourist attractions book up months (sometimes years) in advance.

And just to make things a little more interesting, here are a couple of new ideas to consider... I know everyone is talking about Hot Springs in the summer, but has anyone thought about a day at Oaklawn Park? Live racing is from January through...March or April? I'm not sure, but it isn't summertime.

Also, there's been no mention of Little Rock, but downtown Little Rock is very, very nice nowadays. There are several hotels with lots of space (Peabody, Doubletree, Courtyard Marriott, Wyndham), and there are great restaurants, bars, art galleries, trolley cars, the Clinton Library, Heifer International, the new baseball park, etc., all within walking distance.

Just food for thought! I really don't care where we do it, I just want to see as many of you there as possible!!!

10/10/08 02:38 AM #130

Melody Gartman (Lucas)

Crystal you are right about Little Rock. My sister Cindy did mention we should look at LR over HS. She said it would be more affordable. Just let me know. I can have her contact anyone due to the fact she works for Hilton.

10/10/08 07:58 AM #131

Robert Welch

LR would also be cool. There are a lot of good points there.

And, Melody, who's jousting naked? Not this guy. I don't want to be the cause of nightmares or blindness for anyone. Besides, that nice officer who escorted me out of the last hotel pool I went skinny dipping in said something about it being a really bad idea. I am pretty sure he was right.

Lea Hedrick (Rentch)

Hi everyone! There are so many great ideas here that I can't keep up with you guys. I do agree with Chris, it's all about us cathcing up with each other. I live out of state, so date is also a factor for me. I can't be there with you guys for a planning meeting but if there is anything I can do from deep in the heart of Texas--let me know! I don't live in the heart of Texas--I live VERY close to the Border! Maybe I can bring you guys a real authentic worm filled tequila! I do have a great contact for a T Shirt for the reunion, what do you think? If we set up a place to deposit funds, perhaps we can also have a spot to order shirts. I sure the cost would be around ten bucks for a personalized shirt with a real yellowjacket on it... hate the new one! David-- you drew our other shirt, whatta ya think?

Please excuse my earlier remarks about the Yellowjackets. I took that off. The more I thought about it, we are trying to raise money for the football team and help support them through the bad times. I think we are in the right direction with the Yellowjacket Touchdown Club, and one day we will dominate again. Love those Jackets!

I have added a slideshow of about 30 pictures that I've received so far to the pictures area. Let me know if it's working ok.

Lea - I did?? I have slept since then. I could try to put one together. I think the logo (if it the robotic looking one) is cool. I was thinking more along the lines of an evolutionary chart. From apes to pot bellied middle agers. haha.

Crystal - Take it easy! I haven't read that much since high school. Is there going to be a report or an essay on that??

Chris

I know the manager of sales at the Clarion Resort at the Lake who I mentioned if she could cut a deal for the reunion and here is the information she sent to me.
Just give me the dates and I will get you all the information. Normally in April and May I can cut a great deal unless it falls on the holiday weekend or Derby weekend. We have plenty of room for that amount of people and we have a wonderful ballroom on the 7th floor that overlooks the lake. It will hold up to about 350. Go to our web site www.hotspringsclarion.com.

Just let me know if there is anything you need me to do

Crystal Clark (Woods)

Sorry for the lengthiness, David. It was one of those sleepless nights, so I had nothing better to do!

And speaking of thoughts that come to you in the middle of the night... How does the donations thing work? I mean, if we all just start putting money into a pot, at some point, does someone say, "We now have enough money in the account to cover all expenses for the reunion" (with the exception of travel expenses and lodging)?

I'd hate to think someone would have to ASK for money to help pay for their expenses. But on the other hand, I'd hate to think some people might sit back and wait, just to see if the rest of us come up with enough money for everyone. So... would there be a minimum amount that everyone would have to pay, and then try to raise the rest through donations? Is that how the Class of '88 is handling this issue?

And the slide show is working wonderfully, Pat! Thanks again for your hard work and dedication to this site!

Pat could you submit a poll on what people would like to do for a reunion.
The Austin Resort
Sheridan homecoming
Something in Little Rock Downtown
And make up something else.

Thanks,

Just wanted to point out that we did the Sheridan Country Club for the 10 yr. reunion, I would love to do something new and special for the 20 year reunion. I like any of the other ideas, just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I spoke with Gayla last night and so far, all is well!!! I will let her know you all said Congrats!!

I'll work up something else in the coming weeks for another survey. Until then, let everyone who hasn't taken it yet to please use 'other' on the current survey as that is the reason it was added as an option. I will also check with Carrie and Courtney about setting up the donation area.

To all the thank you's from the past few weeks...Your welcome! I'm no expert and most of the programming is already in place. I've just had some extra time and was willing to help out.

Let's try to not freak out because some things did not work out for the class of 88 like some had hoped. Please keep in mind that this is a group effort and I agree with Carrie and Courtney about meeting in January and respect their judgement as our class officers. After all, we did elect them to their respective offices 20 years ago partly to head this up.

Individually, we can be gathering as much info. about each option as possible to bring to the discussion in January. We are already at least 6 months ahead of where we were for the 10 year reunion because we started meeting at the beginning of the year and spent 4 months gathering our classmates info. I realize that if we rent out anyplace that we need a date, but personally I think most things in Hot Springs are too pricey and would like to see other areas explored. LCC in East End has a very nice facility and I would like it because I live just a mile from there. I would also feel better at a place with no alcohol, but according to the survey it looks like I'm outnumbered in that area. Sheridan CC was ok to me for the 10 year, but I think things got a little out of hand when about half the people there got drunk. Little Rock could be a good alternative as well. I want this to be nice too, but not 'over the top'. Several people have been asking for some of my thoughts, so here ya go.

Chris Campbell

I really think waiting till January 24th we will be shooting ourselves in the foot. I realize we elected Carrie and Courtney as officers. I love them both to death. I probably stepped on somebodies toes trying to find a place for us to have the reunion, but I had some prior experience having done 3 Alumni Fraternity Reunions, a college football reunion, and the 1987 Sheridan Football Reunion. I thought I found the ideal spot in having it at the Austin Hotel. I mean we had a HUGE place, video/audio, a big stage, a DJ with Karaoke, a dance floor, an open bar, big screen to display DVDs of our highschool functions and a slide show if we wished. I found a photographer who was willing to come for free and charge us only for the pics we wanted to purchase. I thought it was cost efficient at about $50-$60 a couple from what I added up. I live in Mount Vernon, Arkansas so Hot Springs would be the furthest place for me to travel. But for a perfect night, and a night to remember with my classmates it would be worth the drive. Believe it or not I don't drink anymore and will not drink at the reunion, sorry cool. But I do realize a lot of people like to drink. A lot of people have families now, so hopefully nobody will get too bad at the reunion. I thought about doing this website, but having to manage a website for 250 people I didn't want no part of that. So Pat thanks alot!!! I am doing what Pat is doing for my Corning Highschool Class, that is only 100 students, & I already knew where alot of them where at so I felt I could manage that site. I just don't hope we wait too late to find a place for the reunion. I can go and get us a checking account, but if people are already ready to give money, why are we not taking advantage of this now? The way the economy is people might not have it later in the months. This is our 20-year reunion, and I want it to be a night to remember. How do the rest of you feel waiting till January 24th? Do you think that is enough time or should we start sooner? One last thinig, if we do something during homecoming a lot of people go to Razoback Football games, and that is usually not a good time to have a reunion.

10/11/08 01:19 AM #144

Patrick Norton

Great job on putting this together Pat. Just to throw my 2 cents in, I like the idea of having it in Hot Springs or Little Rock and I would rather not have it wrapped around Homecoming. I look forward to catching up with everyone on this forum and at the reunion.

10/11/08 08:05 AM #145

Robert Welch

Not that I'm saying anything against Hot Springs, but I think there is one thing to point out. We keep talking about the place and making sure its a special night. Its the people who do that, not the place. Seeing all of you after 20 years (I was unable to come for the 10 year) is more important to me than where we do it or what window dressings.
We could set it up with a boombox in McDonald's and I would still be just as thrilled to be there. Wow. I almost sound sentimental. I should just stick with the "mental" part of that. It's what I'm better at.
