It's so nice to see this site exits. it's a great way to reunite with my classmates. I look forward to my first appearance at the second annual event that will be held in florida.

I love the concept and the website. However, why do we have these Biblical quotes on the web page? While most of us are Christians, there are also Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, etc.  Would we be as comfortable with prominent quotes from the Quran, Vedas, Torah, etc.

I do hope we can establish a SMHS community without too much proselytizing...whether religious or political.

Bumped into the site quite accidentally...must say I'm extremely impressed! The architects are to be commended: very interactive, extremely well laid-out...and although I'm no "techie" myself, I'm sure you're working on making access for those of us who were not listed a lot more direct, rather than via a "gate-keeper." Notwithstanding, the response invitation to join was pretty rapid (almost instantaneous). THIS is not a detractor by any means, for the spendid work, as I indicated!  THIS is a phenomenally professional presentation! 

So sorry I missed all the anniversary festivities, and would have made the effort to participate in bridging the gap, from the "Dinosaur Era" (classes from the 1960s). What is particularly nice about this site is that it lists the overseas contacts by states.  I would ALWAYS occasionally hear about a SMHS Past Students' Reunion that had taken place in NYC, after-the-fact. I am hoping, that with this tool, I might be able to keep up with such events in a more timely manner.  The last such event I attended was on one of my visits to Ja., in 1983/84 (?) in Kingston...and it was refreshing.  I could use such a breath of fresh air in 2012. So I am proud to be once again finally connected with such a distinguished Alumni, hopefully fore ever.

Hello Everyone!

Where have all the "old heads" gone? Reviewed the lists by location (country to country, by years, etc)., and I'm getting quite disturbed...very few if any "old heads" who left school in the 1960s represented in this line-up: Where is everyone?

So looking forward to this year's FL-Reunion, and have been beating the bushes to see who I can shake out to join us!  Just can't wait...but worried that I'll be among the "dinosaurs!" Not to worry, we too have stories that we can tell!  And we also hold the school's history close to our hearts.

Each one had better bring one!!!

High-school mates tie the knot

On the evening of December 28, 2011, security consultant Ian Pounall tied the knot with his high-school classmate Dr Kerrie Fearon at the Boulevard Baptist Church. The reception followed at the Jewels International Resort along Port Henderson Road, Portmore, St Catherine.

Their friendship began in 1989 when both attended St Mary High school and were placed in the same grade-seven class. However, this friendship was purely platonic; little did they know that one day they would make a vow to share their lives together. After high school, they went their separate ways, Kerrie to study medicine at the University of the West Indies and later in the United States, while Ian attained a teaching diploma at The Mico University and bachelor's degrees in political science, international relations and a master of science degree in national security and strategic studies from the University of the West Indies.

Their paths crossed occasionally during holidays when both returned home to St Mary to visit their families. It was in 2010 that Kerrie, on returning from the United States after completing her studies, saw Ian in the town of Port Maria chatting with one of his friends. Being a devout Christian, she immediately began to invite both gentlemen to church; Ian seemed pleased with this.

Numbers were exchanged but, alas, Ian never turned up at church. One day, Kerrie decided to chastise him for not responding to her invitation, he subsequently told her that he was wondering when she was going to call and that he liked her very much. This was the start of a whirlwind romance as they became instant soulmates, chatting over the phone, spending time together, going to the movies, having dinner dates and of course, attending church together.

After a few months, they decided that they wanted to get married, and such was their obvious commitment to each other that Kerrie's mother saw it and decided to see if Ian was serious about her, by giving him a "talk". This signalled to Ian that this was no joke business.

On August 1, 2011, Ian took Kerrie for dinner at Spring Garden Restaurant in Ocho Rios. She was quite sure that he would propose there, but dinner ended and nothing happened. They went to the movie, The Bridesmaids at Cove theatre. During one of the scenes, to her surprise, he went down on his knees. Realising what was happening she begged him to stop and he did. After the movie, Ian determined to propose, on August 1 because of the significance of the day, did so in his car and an excited Kerrie accepted.

The Wedding

The theme of the wedding was a fairytale rainbow, with church décor by the bride's aunt, Dawn Woodbine. The reception area was decorated by Salome Bourne Gordon and wedding planner was Labrea Woodbine. The bride's gown and the bridesmaids' dresses were from David's Bridal while the groom wore a Kenneth Cole suit. Videographer was Wayne Barrett and photographer, Phillip Bulli of Wholesales Photo Studio.

The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Claude Williams of the Grace Baptist Church in Oracabessa.

The couple honeymooned at the Sunset Beach resort in Montego Bay.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - 2012 Reunion

Was really taken aback when I spoke with at least three cohorts from  the 1960s this past week end and none of them, despite being closely in touch with other past students, had no knowledge of this year's Florida event. What's more distressing, it appears as though, this is the group that is so badly under-represented as far as the association is concerned, and in bringing the history of our noble institution to the forefront. These are the historians and trailblazers!

I literallly beg all of you, whenever you speak with ANY past student, DON'T presume that person IS aware of the up-coming event: TELL him / her about the event, and along with YOUR own commitment to attend, try and get that person to take the plunge to do likewise.  We are like a chain...WE are as strong as its weakest link! 

We need ALL the "older" brothers and sisters from the '60s and the '70s to badly fill out the ranks.  Come hurricane (and May is not the season for that in FL) or high waters (and that can only spell high tide - beach), I WILL be there! Everyone's support is needed, but moreso from folks who need just a bit more prodding in order to obtain their participation.

Need to start scouting out airfares IMMEDIATELY, to obtain super deals, for those of us who need to travel from elsewhere, where driving may prove a bit more challenging.

I believe, as an institution / association, we have been around long enough to establish an awesome and powerful NETWORK, IF we choose to unleash our collective power!  WE can do it!

Observer Editorial

I just read the Editorial carried by the Observer, apparently written by a Kingston College-related organization - can't really tell it's obvious relationship, it could be its Alumni Associaiton's President (Wayne Robertson), it's not clear...regradless, it was the most condescending, and pandering piece I've read in a long time.Had this not been a personal comment section of the newspaper, where the public has the sanction of the paper to express its opinions, I'd say the Pricipal of SMHS, needed to make a statement in the Observer to have KC officials do some semblacne of "mouth-cleansing." But that is NOT an official KC-position, so a retraction, or anything close to it cannot be expected. Besides, there are no laws broken as such, except for "poor taste," on the part of the individual writer, on behalf of the organization that he represents.

Don't know if you read the entire distasteful account written by Robertson, but I'll point to just two excerpts of his profound temerity: that KC had won 10 titles [Schools' Challenge Quiz] and perhaps should not challenge the decision, but "...give other schools a chance." What utter gall?!!! This was premised on Robertson's earlier statement that boasted of the "school's formidable record in academia, sports et al [which] has not been achieved by chance, but rather, by hard work,and a voracious drive to be the best in all that we do." What does he believe we've done at SMHS over the years? I don't believe our records, in different categories are any shabbier than KC's, considering how much yourger we are than KC?  So it truly riles me, the attitute of superioriority KC wishes to adopt, as their School's Challege Quiz approached they met SMHS as though they were meeting with "underdogs" and victory was theirs "guaranteed." That WAS their cocky undoing, to begin with! Overconfidence and underestimating the opponent and the tract-record that SMHS has always "quietly" boasted! Hopefull, they've learnt their lesson! It aint over 'til it's over! I beieve KC will never recover from this shock and embarrassment, and that is the problem!

I truly agonize for missing the Reunion which concluded today!  My absence was due to unforeseen circumstances, involving "family" (my pets) :-) I felt quite hypocitical, but shouldn't really, that I literally twisted the arms of a number of participants who attended this year's event, and then was unable to show myself. I was all set to go for months, weeks and then had a "crisis" with my dogs,  less than than two weeks to the event, which I was never able to resolve in this small a window.

Regardless, my every waking moment this week end was with you all.  I believe the Planning Committee should be particularly commended for staging another successful get-together.  But I think you'll agree that despite this being an entire "team effort," Rosemarie's daily bulletins / updates were VERY strategic.  And she commanded the role of the consummate PR professional!  Well done Rosemarie!  But I don't want anyone to think that the dilligence and commitment  of the Planning Committe is being ignored or sidelined: To pull off this event, now running its third year, is no easy feat! And this selfless volunteerism on the part of the Planning Committe members, on behalf of the school and its global community, is remarkable! Hats off to you all!

I miss the opportunity to have seen the folks who attended, including my very good friends: Valrie Williams, Paulette Bailey-Knight, Pam Williams-Stephenson, and of course the chance to see Mr. Johnson, as well as Melrose Spence and Bobby Benjamin. The promise of the beach was not a big draw for me: At this age I no longer have washboard abs (NEVER did have them to start with), or the figure to wear tapered-shirts, so of necessity I would have neither embarrased myself, nor subjected you to the sight of me in "speedos."  It was seeing you ALL that inspired me!  Sadly, this did not happen on this occasion.  There is always next year!  But, with global communications the way they are these days however, this site has been an invaluable creation / tool for the network of those of us who use it to locate and keep in touch. To the creators of this site, we are in your debt for your vision and mission.

Bitter-Sweet Revelations

Friday, May 3, I had to ask that a Federal job interview in Dayton, OH be rescheduled, due to eye surgery earleir that week.  I was  accommodated for a week later, to Friday, May 10. This morning (May 6th), in a telephone conversation with the agency, I learned the Chief of the Division, who is a major member of the interviewing panel, has a scheduling conflict for that date, and ironically, will be in my town...but not en route to meet with me, but rather to attend to her own agenda, and of necessity must rescedule my May 10 interview.  They now want to reschedule for Friday, May 18, of all days!!!  Needless to say, after asking to be accommodated once, I did not want to risk it, by asking twice to go for another time - since they're only doing Fridays, and politically jeopardising my chances of landing this position by persistent date changes. So, after last year's pet-sitting fiasco, now this! I don't know if I should apologize or i should cry!  But I am hoping this continued schedule shifting had better be worth it.  Hopefully, both SMHS and I will benefit from the eventual windfall!

Thanks all for the information provided on the financial status of the group.I would like to suggest we embark on a serious fund raising effort so we can provide scholarship for students  in need.What about introducing our website to all inclusive hotels in Jamaica and offer them exposure while asking them to provide vacation package for the group which we could in return raffle off and donate the proceeds to the school.Will not be a lot of work involved have members committ to selling tickets and we all know everyone wants to go to Jamaica . Is there room for consideration for this idea ? Thanks Paul Simms.
