In Memory

Sylvia Chin

From 25th Reunion book, 1996:

Sylvia J. Chin died on February 19, 1988 in Nashville Tennessee. She was an attorney
for Bell Laboratories for six years after earning her law degree from New York University
Law School in 1974.

Sylvia had great strength of character. She possessed knowledge of self with such clarity as
to be beyond her years. Tremendously bright, she wore her accomplishments easily, never
being boastful nor pompous.

Her family was always important to her. She respected her position within the family.
Alxwe all, her love and concern for each of them never wavered.

Sylvia understood and was faithful to her cultural identity. She also knew her identity in
the larger community of humankind, keeping her allegiance to her ethnic and racial
heritage but never being limited or bound by it. She built bridges across the divide of people
ad not walls.

A loyal and true friend, she was honest and straightforward, compassionate and
understanding. She was a constant and could be depended upon.

She set high standards for herself and others but thought the best of everyone for whom she
had a smile and a good word. If they did not live up to those expectations, she may have felt
disappointment but never rancor. She was, in a word, virtuous. She had integrity.

Molher of Michael and Melissa, wife of Julius Arief, daughter, sister, friend and classmate --
Sylvia touched the soul of everyone who knew her. She is not forgotten.
