In Memory

Diana Bedell

From the 25th Reunion book, 1996:

Diana Bedell was a free spirit from Laguna Beach, California; the least intimidated of
all of us by Swarthmore College. She painted flowers on her cheeks, studied physics, and
danced in her underwear to Jim Morrison. Willets 1st South had the outrageous and the
na'ive, and Diana was an outrageous presence. We sat spellbound listening to her stories of
Haight Ashbury and her romantic tangles.

Diana was expelled for drug-related reasons Sophomore year (but the boys involved did not
have to leave). Several years later we heard that she had been hospitalized and had died.

We have always felt much regret that we did not stay in touch.

(Submitted by Jean Murdock, Deborah Roberts, Pamela St.John, and Betty Bird)

Diana started with the class of 1971 and graduated with the class of 1973.

I remember Diana -- with that lovely flower painted on her cheek! We shared a 2 room double in Parish sophomore year-- she was generous, creative, and cheerful! -- Deborah Bond- Upson

Diana was intriguing and for me, my first encounter with a "flower child" from California. We used to slide down the hill beind the library on lunch trays when winter snow offered the opportunity. She was also brilliant, entering Swarthmore with a plan to major in Astrophnysics. I had never met anyone with that aspiration compbined with a "flower child" aura. Diana was also generous and kind. During our freshman year I became ill with mononucleosis and had to stay in the infirmary for three weeks. Diana brought me her stereo to set up in my room there, knowing how important music was to me. I was deeply saddened by both her unjust expulstion from college and ultimately by her untimely death.
