I finished my doctoral degree in February 2015 and am no longer looking around the room for someone else when the students say Dr. Kidd. After 10 years of teaching writing at Dallas Community College District and 7 years of teaching Dual Credit English (Composition I and II and British Literature) for Tarrant County College, I have started a new chapter in my life, teaching first-year English as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas, the university where I earned my Master’s in English.
I still have no regrets of selling my big, old home and downgrading to a one bedroom apartment. I honestly don’t know what took me so long to sell. I am not spending Saturdays mowing the lawn, making repairs, and cleaning all day. When I am not teaching, staring at a computer screen, attending church functions, walking my dog Wilma, reading, writing, or drawing, I spend time with family and friends. I have become quite the 42 player. Life is good!
For a girl who was told by the guidance counselors that she would never make it in college, I have done well. Associates degree: Valencia Community College, Orlando; Bachelors degree, University of Central Florida, Orlando; Masters Degree, University of North Texas, Denton; Teaching Certificate, University of Texas, Arlington; and PhD, Capella University, Minneapolis.
I wish I'd paid more attention in high school (Tell your grandchildren!).
My second house would in Vermont. Many years ago, I read "Top of the Hill" by Irwin Shaw. After reading it, I wrote Mr. Shaw a letter asking him about the book. We never met, but we corresponded for a couple years until he passed away. I gave-up skiing a couple of years ago, but I still love visiting the mountains.
I get back to Venice every four or five years.
Yes, but work and distance get in the way.
